You are so very wrong and what made WoW a success. If you recall, when EQ2 came out right before WoW did there were actually trailers for EQ2 in friggen movie theaters! Commercials all over for it, it was crazy how much they were pushing EQ2. WoW had no commercials on release it was not marketed heavy. Not like you're talking. You see commercials now but even still I think i see more Rift tv spots than WoW these days.

This type of article is an example of lazy online journalism in that there is no real story here and the piece is entirely speculative and also panders to the websites advertising content. When we get to 2012 we will see what the situation is. The lists are all BS anyway as quite a few of the F2P games have huge player base in comparison to games like RIFT, that probably sub less than 200K at the moment.

    10.) Aion

    9.) TERA

    8.) Age of Conan: Unchained

7.) Lord of the Rings Online

    6.) The Secret World

    5.) EVE Online

    4.) Rift

    3.) World of Warcraft

2.) Star Wars: The Old Republic

    1.) Guild Wars 2

Based on sub numbers by years end.  Though honestly I don't think Aion should be there unless we're talking world wide.

  • BoardwalkerBoardwalker Member UncommonPosts: 388

Aion definitely deserves to be on the list. With the last two patches it has vaulted to the top of the most polished MMOs out there. You haters who actually don't play Aion, or who were rolled in PVP and ragequit, can keep on hating, but the people who actually subscribe to the game and play know how much fun it is.

They can adjust a game all day, but they can't help the issue between the keyboard and the chair.
Played: UO, DAoC, AC, WoW, EVE, TR, WAR, Aion, Rift, SWTOR, GW2, TSW, ESO, Elite:D
Play EVE for free for 21 days

How did you come up with sub numbers for Guild Wars?

My issue is the author's perception of SWTOR vs. GW2. Both games look fantastic, but I'm going to have to go on record as saying that GW2 has way more hype to live up to than SWTOR. At the end of the day, SWTOR is a solid step forward in MMORPG gaming, but also a cautious one. BioWare rightly approached the game's design by keeping (and polishing) all traditional MMORPG elements while addiing a single new one---the full voiceovers. It's a smart move.

On the other hand, GW2 is promising some amazing things. Too good to be true? Possibly. Overhyped? Most definitely. I hope they deliver, but I'll believe it when I experience it.

I thoroughly disagree with the statement that SWTOR has less hype to live up to than GW2. SWTOR has to live up to people's expectations based on 35 years of history with one of the world's top 2 sci-fi IPs EVER. That is going to be seriously hard to do, even harder for a company with zero prior MMO experience. Star Wars Galaxies failed precisely because it didn't live up to those expectations. People wanted to be Boba Fett, not a bantha herder. It took a special kind of person to think that any Star Wars product would go anywhere without space combat too.

Star Wars is one of those IPs that, if done right, could easily break 100 million sales. Bioware/EA might actually be able to hit that with the product that they have now. But then what? If Bioware has basically copied the WoW endgame model, this will be a disaster for the industry because the WoW progression raiding / instanced pvp model is toxic.

We do not need another WoW clone with a different skin over the same tired horse endgame mechanics. This is what happened to Rift. Lots of people at the start, ghost town servers 2 months in, because the endgame = WoW.

The excitement being generated by GW2 is from concrete examples from the developers of why they are not going to be WoW, of innovation.

In all honesty, both games could be big winners, because they are going after different audiences. Gw2 is aimed mostly at the existing market of unhappy MMO gamers. SWTOR is trying to pull another WoW and looking to draw in a LOT of new people into the market.

Who has the bigger shoes to fill? Bioware, hands down.

Yeah that would be nice. It is really something different and I hope they will succeed. But with past releases it showed that if the launch is weak, it never recovers to full potential. So Funcom better do its best to avoid this scenario again.

I'm not sure if it's possible to make a list that is more wrong than that and more biased.

There's so much to come from 2012, making a list about the best 2012 is just useless and not logic.

It's in the same way of making a review from a game that isn't out yet.

You have absolutely NO IDEA how each game is going to turn out. Anything can happen. And only adding 3 "new games" when there's way more better game than Age of Conan and the Fail Aion ?

I just say a big no to this list. Make a top 10 of 2011, which actually might still be wrong, but of 2012 ? You're better be kidding me.

I must agree out of that List the only game even on my Radar is Guildwars 2...

The rest i really have no interest in or ever would need to play..Maybe if SWTOR TSW goes F2P lol i'd try them, have considered Conan though in the past, but freedom seems limited...

innovative?  there is no innovation in this genre any more, its all about whether you story, challenge, or a new style of combat, same game

Age of Conan should get an honourable mention. Because it's a good game. But still needs work.

Some of you calling for ArcheAge to make the list?  The only list that game should make is the black list.  Straight up dumpster material.

And to those of you who think Aion shouldn't be on here??  Aion definitely deserves to be on there because this list sucks so bad.  At least Aion has some polish.

Star Wars is a disaster. Eve is a joke. Secret World is going to bomb because it's poorly made. Guild Wars 2 has all kinds of problems. Ridiculously poor combat and animations. Not to mention the fact that the game is TOO DAMN EASY because it's made for stupidville.  Consoles.

Nobody plays Rift because it just plain sucks.

Most of these games, including World of Warcraft, are for small children with undeveloped minds. Purple bubble baths and hilltop jamborees. Where it sounds like most of you belong.

Tera  should be on the Number 1 spot right now :)

  • HydrateHydrate Member Posts: 5

I agree with most of the list, but my idea list would be this

    1st & 2nd - World of Warcraft / Guild Wars 2 - Back & Fourth Between the Two

3rd - Star Wars The Old Republic

    4th - Tera

    5th - Eve Online

    6th - The Secert World

    7th - Rift

8th - Lord of the Rings Online

    9th - Aion

    10th - DC Universe

The reason I have my list like this is that as WoW is still the biggest & most succesful MMO out there with 10.2 Million Subs Worldwide & declined for the first time from 12 Mill (No one  else can reach that mark ever), Guild Wars 2 has the best PvP experience since Vanilla WoW, Star Wars has amazing story based questing and was the best part of the game. Tera and its unique combat & beautiful world. But your prbly wondering why the hell is Eve ahead of Rift well one thing Eve is different and isnt a fantasy based game, it brings many cool aspects to mmos. TSW has time to prove itself and move up the list or drop thats pretty much it. Now lets get this out of the way, Rift was suppose to be the game to defeat WoW, was the prbly the most identical to WoW & Trion litterally attack  WoW itself and after 60 days that was the last you heard of Rift, Honestly in my opinion the biggest flop outta any that has MMO launched, but its gets 6th cause its atleast decent and the Rift events are pretty cool, but any chance of Rift ever making a comeback was shot down with how 1.3 River of Souls was executed and Trion merging servers and making 1-20 F2P, the game only costing 5 bucks on steam and barely seen in stores anymore showed that the game is possibly on its way to either the B2P or F2P market like the other mmos before it. The other 3 games are there for a reason and the way that MMORPG put is the best way to have it.

Also this is my own opinion, but this is also the Internet and when someone doesn't like it they will obivious rage & whine about how wrong I am. But anyway good day and MMORPG did a good job on it, but they do need to adjust some position and make it more realistic.

And? it had a great smooth launch. Is well supported by a company and gets frequent content updates. It is one of the most successful MMOS to launch in recent years and has some great content updates lined up for year 2012.

Believe it or not but not everyone is jumping on unique and innovative bandwagon as these two factors are not guaranteed to make a game fun. Yes fun, the most important aspect of any MMO.
Fun? is that why it dropped 50% of its subs after the first 3 months?

And they already merged servers lol, if this is the second most succesful mmo in the west, the west is dead.

I would like to add in, it actually dropped 65% of it subs after its first 2 months and dropped another 10% after 1.3 River of Souls. Rift has less population than Eve also all there realm activity is from the F2P 1- 20 pple. Plus everyone convinned themselves to 4 servers and is the only reason those servers are high pop. its not the second most succesfull MMO its not ever close, it had the biggest Flop of any MMO. the second most succesfull MMO is actually EQ2 than possibly SWTOR or SWG.

I quit Tera after three days.  Liked the combat but the game just got dull for me.  Good graphics.

I've played GW2 and it also has good graphics but there really isn't anything new about the game, typical MMO stuff.  It might be a winner since it requires no sub.

I'm waiting for The Secret World, got my preorder and a bunch of free items from the Facebook Secret War promo.  If anyone is interested in joining a casual group for launch, PM me for my TeamSpeak server info.
