Im 31 and yes im in the same boat, there seem to be alot of games coming out far too fast, not to mention once wow went main stream and pulled ALOT of crap into the mmo world i started to feel quite stale for the MMO worlds around... yes there area few games i would probably play still but ive found myself going back to things like BFBC2 and some co-op stuff that i can play with my wife without having some 12 year old come in and tell me to suck a #$% cos he lost in a PvP fight etc...

all i can say is bring on DIABLO 3 and BF 3 and my gaming life will be complete for the next few years... yes my wife plays those as well...

It seems games nowadays are rarely written by talented gamers. Most of the time a bunch of marketing experts decides what idea is profitable and risk free or the coders themselves decide to make a quick buck selling rehashed old concept. Those people approach games as if they were not part of entertainment business, which thrives on creativity and brilliant new concepts. It seems they are trying to sell us yet another pair of socks. New colors, slightly different pattern, because according to the research people don't like big changes. But who likes to get socks every Christmas? Gaming industry lacks great minds and pursue of epicness, and it is getting harder and harder for me to find a brilliant game that will amaze and entertain me.

Its not as simple as saying games are getting boring. We do want new and improved things faster nowadays.

But at the risk of starting a flamewar.. WoW did contribute to the whole deal. Parcially because of the size of its success we lost alot of flavour in the mmo world, too many are now trying to get success from their forumla, which making switching far less.. effective because once the shiny wrapper is gone, you find yourself in the same concept you hoped to leave behind, rift is a good and recent excample of that.

Companies in other types of games arent doing much different , bringing out nothing but sequels using the same game play, same mechanics, same gimmics ( same ai which makes the sequels SO much easier because you already learned to counter it)

Blizzard is a great excample of that, look at Dune 1 and 2, brushed up graphics , new cutscenes, most missions didnt even get a different looking map from its prequel. Starcraft 1 and 2..new cutscenes, new story back bone, but still nearly identical missions, though they didnt put many hero campains in it, even though most of those where basicly park hero in corner missions anyway/.

Just to make sure, these games are just excamples, I can find different excamples if needed, but these are just fairly recent and some of the best known ones.

So the market is part of the problem we are bored or bored so fast with games nowadays.

The gaming world now employs the same orginality as the movies and tv.

    Well I'm 34 now and I haven't played a MMORPG since 2008, when I re-joined EVE.

I wish I never quit in the first place and I wish I never quit UO.

Take a break from MMORPGs but keep the account you care most about, so that it's there when occasionally you feel like playing.

I feel as though I've 'outgrown' games altogether, without looking down on them or those who play them. However, every now and then, maybe only once or twice a year, I feel like playing non-stop for a week or so. I wish I had my old UO or EVE account to do that with.

So, if you're anything like me, give up playing but don't give up your account.

Congrats on getting in shape and good luck with pursuing it. I love it, too.

Mmorpg's (and games in general) are getting more streamlined , simpler and easier. Everything is given on a plate.

Mmorpg's today are also solely focused on combat. Normal non-end game play is very short because it is very fast.

Beign very fast and at same time very easy and streamlined it is at same time very boring.

Mmorpg's are more accesible than in past but because of that they became more boring and unable to keep player's attention at same time.

Game studios try to eat a cake and still keep it. So they try to cater to every potential player , but at same time this lowest denomination catering is making game more shallow.

Yeah I juggled between that and homo erectus, but there are no more homo erectus or homo ergaster. I didn't want to use homo sapien, it just didn't roll off the tongue right. So, erect apes fit the bill.

    Godspeed my fellow gamer

Or are the games just not really doing anything different these days and as much as I want to fool myself; my subconscious knows.

I've played pretty much every major MMORPG to come out?  So what else is there?  Is there a fun online strategy game I don't know of?  I loved playing WC3 online.
No, you're correct. The industry as a whole has stagnated, and just repeatedly copies each other over and over until we get a mixed version of "Boring" & "Overdone Linear Questing" to the point of nausium.

Games are getting more boring, because they refuse to innovate rather than stagnate.

Personally from someone who works in the industry, i feel the same as this, many AAA titles are the same type of content, over and over, with small to slight variations from here and there.. Someone else also mentioned that too many games are typing to capture a larger audience, than focus on something.. I also agree with this.

The problem is spread around all of the entertainment industry.

Innovation is not used unless it's a guaranteed sucess.

I relate the gaming industry to the cinema industry quite well at the moment, alot of remakes and reboots with splashy visuals and no content.

    Im 33, same boat.

And its not inovation the industry needs.

Its writers, ever since they shove them out in the streets, and gave games medioric storylines with lousy twist the games went from awesome story to incredibly dull games, since you dont care what happens in the game.

I can say in my case, it's most definitely the games. I am 39.

I picked up Torchlight about a year ago and for about a month I had a lot of fun. The game was fresh and fun and exciting. Even Rift was fun for a little while.

I was already a 30 something when Warcraft came out and I had fun with that game, full time, non-stop for about 5 years. So this argument that old people can't appreciate etc etc is silliness imo. The original warcraft had 1/4 the content that is available now (probably less), but it took 10x longer to actually appreciate it, and it had a community. New games lack community which makes them very boring to me outside of the initial month or so of new baby smell.

Ive been playing and loving games for 20 years .. and story has never mattered to me. Gameplay is what matters to me and when talking about MMOs a large part of the gameplay that is lacking is grouping, and community.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)

While somewhat true, it's also not 100% correct.

I mean you have alot of games lately that are basically only story and no gameplay, actually alot of great story games have showed up lately, but the gameplay is getting very stale.

MMO's are easy mode games now.   All made to allow you to solo.  the last chalenging mmo for me was EQ.  I've played most of them starting with The Realm.   WoW had me hooked for about 2 years, untill they allowed mods.  Lets make an easy mode game even easyer.    If you are looking for chalenge in a game,  you wont find it in the mmo world we have now.

Ever since this cross plat love affair started with developers good games have been few and far between and good Pc exclusives in more so. It's not you, the days of new game release for the Pc where you had developers trying new things and ideas has now been stopped to a trickle. Even the new Deus Ex Human revolution, you can see it was held back by being developed console in mind. I hope BF3 has not been affected like this too.

The current gen of Pc hardware makes console tech look a joke, I wish developer would snap out of this cross plant love affair and and release their creative juices PC DX11 exclusives that pushes the envelope and makes ideas just not possible back in the day very possible now. One reason I'm looking forward to Planetside 2, that's been made for Pc first and then ported scaled down for the PS3 only, Xbox360 just can't handle this one. Dev for PS3 and Pc only lets dev not be held back nearly as much if they had to keep Xbox and Wii in the loop.

Oh dear, I have the same feeling since few years and I only play the same game. Most of games, like movies, are shit.

I was just talking about this with my wife the other day, Basically I'm seeing the same trend with videogames now as i saw in  the Arcade Crash in the 80's. Back then every company out there was trying to get into the arcade business producing more and more arcade machines ,the problem was they were either made just clones of origional games such as donkey kong or pacman or just basic crappy games and eventually people got tired of it . You could actually watch arcade after arcade slowly go out of business. My town had at least 10 arcades during prime time then within a year we had 1 left. Sadly game companies haven't learned and history is repeating itself.

For me I'm getting bored. I used to play terrible games back in the 90's when I was younger, played through FF7 and grinded it out. Today just can't play terrible games and I get about an hour into FF7 before quitting.

MMOs target gamers with money, hence the fee > People with some money are usually older and in complete charge of their spending.

Ergo I am not too old for games, I prefer mmos to watching soccer, in fact we are at the timeline now where we can easily watch something and game.

The fact the industry isn't evolving with its player base is the major factor.

Atm Im playing lotro, may sub to cox and will be buying GW2.

An mmo needs to be something like an old friend someone you turn to for a chat but you know thats there for you when you need them!  Some stalker that tries to take over you life is not cool!

I'm right with you!  I'm finding it harder and harder to stick with a game now.  I hope I'm not getting jaded!

  • Paradigm68Paradigm68 Member UncommonPosts: 890

Probably a combination of both. Though it occurred to me that lack of peer pressure has a lot to do with it. When you're younger competition/belonging amongst your peers is probably a greater driver of game play than actual enjoyment of playing. As an adult, having left peer pressure behind as you've matured (presumably), if a game isn't deeply engaging you have no particular imptetus to keep playing. The next day at the office no one is going to tease you or expel you from the group if you didn't complete some game objective. If you're younger however you'd probably get a much deeper enjoyment from participating in something your peers are, either to be sharing the experience with them, beating them, or just being able to keep up with the conversation the next day at school, regardless of whether you actually enjoyed the game or not.

To be clear I'm not saying younger people don't enjoy their games, I'm saying there is another component to their gameplay that may greatly reduce the importance of the enjoyment.  I think WoW is a good example of this. As an adult I tried WoW and played it for a while, got bored and walked away. No problem. But if I were in high-school and all my friends were still playing WoW I'd probably still be subbed and putting in playtime.

i find playing mmos only fun when i play with my friends or gf. after 12 years, its all pretty much predictable. from the first lvl of your char, to "end game." its incredibly boring playing by yourself.

i thought my mmos days were finally over. i find i am having fun with mmos again though since i started playing with my gf. we play age of empirs online and do all the missions that allow op together. been having fun playing lotro too.

to the op: maybe you should bring your friends to play with you. doesnt even have to be an mmo. can just be a game with online features like call of duty on xbox or ps3, or league of legends. playing on vent with your friends when they are at their own houses can be very fun as well. you can shoot the breeze instead of worry so much about grinding.

taking a long break can help as well, a year or two. maybe find a nice girl and start a family and not give a crap about mmos anymore could be very beneficial as well.

    I disagree.

The landscape of gaming has changed over the last few years. In addition to a regurgitation of a lot of the same over the last 7 or so years, games in general are shallower than they use to be. There's too much focus on graphics, and too little on the actual gameplay.

I find myself feeling similarly in that a lot of the newer games seem boring to me, because they're too linear, simple,  and nothing new. But there are still some games that have been coming out, mostly indie games it seems, that give a lot of freedom, complexity, and have more original gameplay.

This is just a symptom of the gaming industry going more mainstream and dumbing down to the lowest common denominator of gamer. The big name developers aim for the broader audience, but end up alienating the gamers that supported the foundation of the industry. Luckily there are new gaming companies popping up all the time and fullfilling the desire for games with a more oldschool design philosophy, meaning gameplay over graphics.
