Guild Wars 2: The End is Only the Beginning

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

It seems that any more, "endgame" is the buzzword whispered by players as they peruse upcoming MMOs...or maybe it's loudly crowed from the rooftops. In his weekly Guild Wars 2 column, MMORPG.com's David North takes a look at the endgame and the amount of content that Guild Wars 2 will feature. Read on!

Ah yes, the endgame. The time when the player has completed the story line of the game and now gets to have some fun, whether it’s finding treasures, or just seeking out personal glory for some bragging rights. Every MMO has an endgame, some more than others, and that is exactly what I would like to talk about today. What can we expect from ArenaNet in terms of endgame?

Guild Wars 2 is one of those games where I believe it's going to be about the journey and story along with traditional RPG elements like loot collecting.  So many other games are built so that you rush to the end to experience the "real" game.  I like the way GW2 is shaping up!

Agreed. Not having monthly fees is an advantage in this case. It doesn't really pose a big problem for ANET if people play for 6 months and then take a break until next expansion launches while games like Wow needs to have the players playing all the time.

"And what makes it all worth it, is that the winning server will receive a blessing for their “world” for another two weeks until the next battle begins."

Hmm, let me get this straight ... each WvWvW battle lasts a week and then you have to wait two weeks for the next WvWvW fun to begin?!

So "world pvp" not only restricted in place (designated zones only) but also restricted in time?

Does this mean you can't enter the WvWvW area in those weeks inbetween? Or is the battle fought after a week and then the zones become a barren battlefield without objectives yet with the option to roam around looking for pvp if you so desire?

I had the impression that every battle lasted a week, immediately followed up by the next one.

    *confused*

Same here. I'm just as interested in the journey, as I am the destination. I'm liking how the "endgame content" isn't just confined to a few instances, located in the last/highest-level zone (like most games). It can't get here soon enough for me!

No, WvWvW is always there. I think there's some misunderstanding on the author's part. Basically your server fights two other servers for two weeks, then if you win that battle your server gains some bonuses for the two weeks after that but at the same time your server is fighting a new battle against two other servers.

    World vs World?

I can't recall a mmorpg where you even had more then 100 vs 100 on the same map so how are they going to do 1000 vs 1000?

What's that you say; there are instances of 10 vs 10 times 100?

No seriously how does this world vs world work?

I agree with Loke, I can take my time and enjoy this one, and i can still afford to play SWTOR or Planetside 2 at the same time.

As it is now. I log on WoW.  i sit in trade for 2 hours.  I didnt get to raid this week, im a fury Warrior, they needed an extra caster to progress past one of the bosses. so now i sit here waiting. no one needs a fury warrior. :(. not even my IRL friends want me.  I log on my druid which i leveled feral and enjoy playing it feral and im forced. litterly FORCED to play resto. or i cant come. WTF is this.   Another thing i love about guildwars. is the removal of that damn Holy Trinity. Tank Healer and DPS.

So anyways after sitting in trade for 2-3 hours. spaming lfg. I did my dailies already, i do need gold or those marks anymore. I can only get gear from Firelands now. But no one will take me. i grow bored and log out.  Now its to the point that i log in for 10minutes. Troll chat to try to get some amusement from the game. but it gets old fast. And those no other good MMOS out right now that i can play. cept OLD games with graphics that are hard to get use to. and EVE online i dont even need to log in to play. it plays it self.  Blah!!

"You hear of that game on the n64 with the elf and a fairy. i believe it was called Zelda.  I never got why they named him that. Zelda is a girls name. "

So yeah i cant wait .  I can afford all 3 games and never get bored again!.

If it is 1000 vs 1000 they will probably split the war up into parts or instances. each instance affecting the rest.  more then 250 players in 1 area is usualy too much bandwidth for most of the people.

Now I'm a huge GW2 fan, and you can check that based on my previous posts, but what you listed in this write up is nowhere near "impossible" to cover.  I daresay that almost all dedicated players are going to complete every dungeon on story and exploration mode, hunt down all the elder dragons, and, of course, participate in WvWvW PvP at one time or another.  And it won't take that long to do so.  While I do intend to roll at least 5 characters because there are currently 5 classes I would like to try, as well as each of the races, "roll an alt" is an argument you must have been fumbling in your pockets to dig up as far as coming up with more "endgame" content GW2 has to offer.

Also, at least in their current state, and perhaps this will change, those Elder Dragon fights seem nearly impossible to lose when you can either be ressurrected or revive and run back.  I really hope they don't all become zergfests.

To clarify, the point of my post isn't "oh noes, GW2 isn't going to have enough content!"  I'm sure they'll have plenty to do at endgame; we just haven't seen what it will all be yet.  Rather, my point is that this write-up is completely unproductive, offers absolutely nothing new or insightful, and, in fact, becomes counter-productive to hype up GW2 as it instead pitches random non-endgame content as the entirety of endgame content, thereby making to seem as if there actually will be little to do.

But we can do W v W v W at level 1, correct? Doesn't detract from it being an end-game option, of course, but being able to level in PvP is one of the very bright spots in WAR and a feature that pulls me in more quickly and deeper than most other features.

They are not.... there is probably a 500 people max for every of the 4 PvP zones... It was stated by someone during guild wars...

It might be 500 for every side however...

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Do anyone realise how much gamecontent that is gained, when not being forced into a raiding threadmill to not fall behind. It is simple all off the game you haven't touched while powerleveling to 80, that is availeble for exploration, titlegrinding or possible PvP. And be sure that before to many have been through all that , new content will be added.

    To the OP..

W v W v W is not endgame content ,yes you can play it at top level but you can also play it from level one and use it to level up your character. It's open world PVP that does not take place in a locked instance, instead it takes place in an open zone which anyone from that server can enter and leave at anytime.

So WvWvW IS NOT END GAME content.

I respectfully disagree if it's something I plan on doing alot in the endgame then I consider it endgame content.

I plan on WvWvW alot even when I am cap so therefore it's endgame content to me <shrug>

That is incorrect. It is not exclusively end-game content. Being able to participate in it at level 1 isn't a condition of end-game content, being able to do it at end game is.

Of course, this does open up the definition of end game content.

    Read what i said..

I said you can do WvWvW PVP at end game just like you can do it from level one so it's not just end game content. End game content is content that you can only do at end game so WvWvW  is not just in the same catergory as true end game content.

I read what you said don't be dense please. You said it's not endgame content but that's going by your own definition of what endgame content is.

My definition of endgame content is something I will be doing when I'm at cap - therefore WvWvW is endgame content.

So the people who complain about GW2 having no end game content should be pleased.  Either they will welcome the open world mega-boss encounters and embrace the chance at everyone getting loot, or they'll QQ and go back to WoW/Rift where they are stuck in an instance with the very real chance of having to wait another week for that drop they've been wanting.

See, reasons like these are why I want to play this game so bad.  Nuff said.

Like i said before and you must of read..

WvWvW can be done at any level so it's not just end game content like the OP is implying.

    I agree..

Anyone who thinks GW2 being BTP will lack content has not been watching or listening to the devs for the last 3 odd years.

Ah right it's just you said "IT IS NOT ENDGAME CONTENT" but that's going by your own definition. My definition differs from yours and so I'd disagree, it is endgame content because it's content I'll still be accessing frequently in the endgame.

Yeah i understand what you are saying but i said the same thing is my op.

But hey ..the main thing is we both are looking forward to WvWvW content from level one to top level and beyond.

This can only be good especially with all the other options and things to do..
