Star Wars: The Old Republic: PAX 2011 - That’s More Like It

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

After the crushing disappointment from Bioware during Gamescom earlier this month, MMORPG.com's Mike Bitton was relieved in a B-I-G way with revelations about Star Wars: The Old Republic coming out of PAX. Check out Mike's thoughts about the big news and then leave us a few comments.

Fortunately, PAX Prime was a good deal better on the latter bit. It’s almost a bit embarrassing how little it takes for an event to go from a massive disappointment in my eyes to ‘a good deal better,’ but the difference literally came within the last ten minutes of the last SW:TOR PAX panel (before the Q&A session). The showing was largely the same as Gamescom in every other way: there were demos of the Eternity Vault, PvP matches for fans to participate in, and Q&As where numerous questions on the games minutiae were answered.

This facet of SWTOR has some serious potential.  I really hope they live up to it here.

I just care about a release date at this point....or a beta weekend invite at the very least.

Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol' storm right square in the eye and he says, "Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."

Actually they showed a video that showed come cannons and a base being destroyed by a guy firing a bazooka at it.

    In Bioware we trust!

Think this is the one your refering to:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsV5FpAY6oc

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

I agree with plescure: Release date or nothing. ! ;)

Anyway, the pvp looks promising and fun and has potential to become even better if bioware plays it rigth. Unfortunately SWTOR suffers from the "two faction syndrome" which most likely will lead to unbalanced open world pvp due to population issues.

They actually addressed that in the panel and said there is a balancing system so that if say, the Empire has 200 in the zone and Republic has 100 there will be drops and tools to equalize the battles (Like that bazooka and turrets).  They indicated they had a robust plan around this issue that even included scirmish and small unit tactical missions.

I think we are probably going to see a more solid if not an actual release date after the september stress test thing ends, if that goes well they will most likely give a solid release date. Until then they don't want to give a date then have something go wrong for whatever reason during the september event and have to change it again.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Nice. Somehow I missed that. Thanks for info.

But I have to see that live and in action by myself to see if it works.... so... where is the release date ? =)

I'm not much of a PvPer. So, the released information at PAX was not that crucial to me.

I have to say that by Gamescom I was already very pleased with all the info that was already out for the game, but the reveal on PvP at PAX made me curious about it. This might be just the right formula to awake my enjoyment on PvP.

The info on World PvP, with them saying they will work to overcome faction imbalance on servers, was welcome.  Still I'm more interested in the Legacy System and Character Creation / available Species for each Class on Launch.  As I'm finding it difficult to decide what Class to play...

I simply don't want to do as I have in the past.  Where I roll half a dozen characters before I decide on which to stick with full time.  Plus, if a feature of the Legacy System is that it unlocks new playable races that will factor into my decision.  And a big part of this is that I'm almost certain that some of the Class / Species combinations that I'd like to play won't be available initially.

For example: a "dark side" Nautolan Shadow, or a "light side" Chiss Marauder...

As for the release date:  I still feel like they shouldn't be "taking our money" then holding out on us!  And I don't care what they're stupid excuses are - they're supposed to be professionals.  Set a Date then Make It Happen!!

Does anyone know if these is like WoW Wintergrasp. Meaning whether there are periods of time where the planet is under either the Empire or the Republic's control and there can be no attacking. And there are only scheduled times where offense/defense matter? It's nice to hear that they seem serious about PvP, just trying to figure out how open this pvp actually is.

i hope they don't.  It should be non-stop.  I hated wintergrasp, just because of this.

Am I the only one who arent going insane due to lack of info from Bioware?

I prefere that they shut up if they arent sure how or why, heck I prefere they keep most of the data to themselves, so we won't get a game that is explored, before it's launched, what happened to firing up a new mmo and figure out how and why yourself? do we really need indepth details on how world pvp and tier sets look like to buy the game? what?

And the whole writeup is nothing but speculation, you think they wont tell because you think they have pve as their first priority and then you specualte that pvp arent finished, how about sticking to what you know? as in nothing.

I'm getting the same feeling about this game as I got from DCUO pre-launch.  Everybody will be screaming like little excited schoolgirls at a Justin Bieber concert or Twilight movie until it finally squirts out... but it'll just land with a big, wet disappointing thud at everybodys' feet.

Yeah, some serious invites went out for testing. A lot of my pvp buddies and myself got invites. I am looking forward to testing some pvp out.

PAX was definitely a big win for PvPers.

Why cant they make pve servers without all that open pvp, lakes in several zone on several planets, and now the supposedly solo content planet at turns out to be pvp central too?

Sheesh, why did they even bother calling some servers PvE :(

Um..no. This has nothing to with the solo planet. As far as I know the solo planet hasn't been announced yet.

Sheesh, why did they even bother calling some servers PvE :(

Because many of us who PVE like the designated PVP areas for when we feel like doing that sort of thing. PVP servers are for players that like to PVP 24/7. If you don't want to PVP, don't go to the areas

    Currently Playing: World of Warcraft

I like the design a lot, I've usually played on PvP realms in themepark games but I always hoped there would be a PvE "hybrid" server which had designated PvP areas within zones. I love world PvP but I dont like having to watch over my shoulder 24/7, I have long afk's sometimes and stuff like that, privilige for stealth characters only on normal PvP servers :P

I'm not sure there's anything that Bioware could show that would get me really excited.  Whether it's the marketing machine or the developers themselves, they don't even seem terribly excited about the title anymore.

It really feels like Bioware bit off more than they could chew and now they regret the project ... it's like watching people work to get paid vs working because the love what they're doing.  An analogy, it's like watching facebook help pitch that facebook phone ...

If you don't worry about it, it's not a problem.

for the trolls  yelling release date get over it. They have stated over a 100 times after september beta events they will know alot more about a specific release date and they dont plan on given one till 4-8 weeks from release.

as for pax prime the beta event weekends was huge for me. i wanted that info badly. the fact on forums they stated everyone signed up for testing will get into at least one of these weekends makes me drool.

of course u only get in for one weekend but still thats all i really want. to see the game for myself

as for world pvp i loved the info. i dont have nearly the concerns the writer here does. for one they have 11 pvp oreiented planets.

weather its a campaign or constant war dont care it actually makes me wanna take part in pvp that and huttball never though id say that

pve player who never liked pvp in wow is looking forwars to pvp still cant believe that.

So basically, at the end of the day. With the 5th pillar done and all, its basically a PvP/Raid gear grind?
