If I cannot purchase/buy a copy of SWTOR from EA/Bioware, and get into the game the day of the launch, I will stop posting here....anyone else have faith that this 'limit' is real and not just a lame ploy to get people to pre-order, and take the challenge, and stop posting if a copy of SWTOR can be had?
Please, like they can spend all this money making the game, having the pre-order record or whatever, but they can't buy enough servers to make sales unlimited....like if they let 1 million people in, but all of a sudden 1.1 million people would break things!
Not that it matters, it's just odd that so many believe this, and then swallow the lie, behind the lie. Companies are in business to make money, creating a fake shortage to drive sales makes more money...You would have a bad company if a company as big as EA/Bioware wouldn't buy enough servers/bandwidth to make as much cash as they could.
Yeah people have limited things before, but these were companies that had limits in cash/resources...Like they say, you gotta have money to make money...Those companies didn't....EA/Bioware does.

I have complete faith that there is a 'limit'. Whether that limit if 10 Billion or 10 Thousand is irrelevant.
As a public company, they can not 'lie' to the public as it'll probably fall under 'false advertising' or 'misleading the shareholders' or w/e the legal term is.
However in saying that, there is no way EA/BW knows how many they are going to sell. How do you predict a sale of this magnitude?
This isn't a single player game where it doesn't really matter if your servers are up or not.
They will have the numbers sure, it'll be a predictied number based upon their pre-orders but a game of this magnitude tends to produce outliers/exceptions.

I don't understand why you're so upset. Obviously there is a limit on boxed copies of any game..that's just common sense. I haven't read anything anywhere about a lack of digital pre-orders. If anything its more or less a way to funnel more people into buying the came through Origin.
The exact quote from the email is this, it's confusing I suppose..but it doesn't say anything about running out.
"With the release date revealed, pre-order quantities will go fast. If you haven't already, make sure to pre-order* now and secure your Early Game Access and exclusive in-game bonus item."
Sounds to me like they're saying you could miss out on Early Game Access..not on a freakin pre-order..
Like I said, nothing for or against the game being good/bad.....and as for me being upset? I'm not. I just find it insulting to peoples intelligence, and cheap.
If the limit is 1 billion, or 10 billion, I mean come on, is that really a real limit? Like I said, I stand by my comments, I guarantee you will not be waiting to get in, because they hit this faux limit.
So if you aren't sure, don't let them pressure you, wait till you hear more, or they drop the NDA, don't feel you will be left out imo.
I will probably give it a try, but I am waiting to hear more myself, I have some friends playing, so it makes it more likely I will play. I just don't buy their ploy for 1 second.

- For the digital copies there is literally no limit. They can put an artificial limit, but due to the nature of digital information they can make basically infinite copies. As for the CE, or boxes (physical products) the limit comes in how much they are willing to spend on production costs.
You're also right, they can not lie to the public. Doing so would fall under 'false advertising'. Lying to the shareholders would be along the lines of falsifying earnings / sales information.
As for predicting the number of sales, it basically comes to such:
- You're right, you can't ever predict the exact number of people who will buy a product (especially because of outliers / exceptional circumstances). However, you can ignore those to some degree, and predict based on trends that make outliers / exceptions basically irrelevant (short of a natural disaster). I'd be very surprised if EA Didn't have a good estimate of potential earnings, and if they haven't already showed this to their investors. Otherwise it would be difficult to keep them onboard. As much as we love starwars, if you look at their track record (especially for games), it isn't exactly stellar. Any real investor is going to want a bit more reassurance other than 'it has lightsabers'.
Like I said, nothing for or against the game being good/bad.....and as for me being upset? I'm not. I just find it insulting to peoples intelligence, and cheap.

Think I heard a financial analyst say a '3M initial sales' at one point.
I tend to listen to those guys as they have their own $$$ on the line on these types of things.
But who knows?
When WoW was launched, it was 'predicted' to be 500k-1M sales/sub and that analyst got flak because of 'unrealistic expectations'. Numbers were thought to be too large.
A game of this magnitude tends to produce exceptions.
It is a 'Star Wars game by Bioware' Think those words alone will tell everyone if they will like it or not.
Disclosure, I am one of the millions that will buy everything that has a 'made by BioWare' logo.
This includes the N7 Beanie hat. Wore it to a company outdoor function and the amount of 'Commander Shepard' phrases I got was a bit disturbing. Never realized how many co-workers were gamers.. o_O

Like I said in another thread on this topic. Its just tricks. Sure, there is a limit. Every game ever made has a limit. The limit is going to be the amount they ship(millions), which I guarantee will be plenty to go around.
A little further research would have prevented most of the complaints in this thread. They are artificially limiting available stock so they don't run into the problem wow had at release, where people were waiting in queues for hours to play. They know, based on pre-orders, approximately how many servers they are going to need at launch. Based on that, they are limiting sales so that there won't be more accounts playing then their servers can handle. Obviously, if the demand is signifigantly higher they would bring up more servers to make room. There will probably not be a hard limit on sales, but a limit based on what they can handle at that moment.
You folks are getting all worked up over nothing.

A company with their assets can handle whatever the pre-order number is. It's not like their limit will prevent servers from being full, everyone won't be on one server. People have to spread out either way, and people will still have to either wait, be locked out, or choose other servers.
I haven't seen anyone 'worked up'...Its a forum, you post info/opinions. I have given legitimate reasons as to why I think its a dishonest marketing ploy, even if technically not a lie...since the limit could be more than their are people on Earth....

So instead they would have too many servers and spread the population too thin? Seriously, you guys simply aren't thinking. They can't really accurately predict how many people will buy the game initially so they create a temporary limit so that they know exactly how many servers they'll need at release. After that they can add more if needed should the population continue to grow. Also, I don't care how big their budget is, no company simply throws money away by buying more equipment than they need. Inefficiency of that sort is strongly frowned upon in business.
I haven't seen a UFO, but people told me they exist.
They are either lying or mistaken about what they saw, right?
This makes no sense whatsoever.
Precisely! /clap x 3
UFOs could exist but just because I haven't the vision to see beyond two self-imposed limited variables, the conclusion is faulty. And so is the OP premise that only two answers are possible in this situation, period.
Thank you for responding so I could tell you that personally.
Maybe you could suggest other variables and start adding to the discussion in a meaningful sense?
Because, right now, I am seeing no value to your flawed observations here at all.

Obviously with EA's infinite wisdom/resources, they must have infinite amount of servers because they don't know how many will buy SWTOR.
/Sarcasm
Not sure what the big deal is, having a sensible approach of 'this is how much we can support' and communicating that is a good thing.
Actually why don't MORE MMOs do this?
Let people know that 'hey, we only have so much resources'.
Seems logical to me.
Except that your assumption is utterly false.
They are selling the 'limited preorders' right up to launch, as has been demonstrated in the thread (you did read the thread right?). They are not doing what you suggest here at all.

If it bothers you so, then simply don't do it. If you want to complain at least come up with something meaningful. You and SaintViktor are of the same ilk, you're so intent on finding something to complain about you don't do any research and will take anything you can and twist it into something you can complain about it. Your posting history in the TOR forum is consistent throughout.
And don't think the fact that you're buying the game changes your nature, in my eyes it simply makes you a hypocrit. If you're going to buy the game even if it's just to play with some friends then at least TRY to find something to enjoy rather than complaining all the time about it. Trust me if you complain like this in game your friends WILL NOT appreciate it. Either that or recognize you will not like this game, don't buy it, and move on with your life and quit hounding others simply because YOU don't like something they do.

Yeah, same. I am sick of the outright lies they tell to shift their product.
It is astounding that some folks still defend and justify obvious lies that are designed to treat the customer base as morons, but I guess thats how they get away with it.
I have a strong feeling that if it was another company, say Aventurine, who lied like this to create a fake rush the same posters defending EA (though in their heads they probably think they are defending 'Bioware' or the SW franchise in general) here woulnt be so understanding about it.

I can honestly say that no matter what company it would have been, my reaction would have been the same, all the sensible arguments that other people have already mentioned in this thread, from regular run-of-the-mill marketing action as seen a gazillion times in advertisement in this or that form, to them limiting the number of launch numbers to an amount they think they can handle and cope with and using a staged launch.
Besides, the argument you're trying to make might as well apply to you: if it was about a game or company you actually respected and liked instead of EA/BW or SWTOR that you seem to dislike or look down upon, would your reactions still have been the same instead of this constant EA/BW bashing and criticising? Or would you have been more moderate, looking at the situation from various angles and not seeing and believing only the most negative possibility?

ITT: people still looking for ways to bash a game company despite that company doing it's best to please the people.....
Guess the saying is true about pleasing all the people all the time etc etc.
So, thats a no you cannot I assume?
Again, I have edited out the trollish personal remarks for the sake of clarity.
