Even WoW was sold at stores days after the initial release, and this game was hyped as heck. You might not get a preorder out because your supplier has pretty much sold all they got from their distributor. Fair enough.
But seriously, a company will want to sell as many copies as possible as fast as possible. Claiming EA/Bioware wants to decrease server load or queues at launch is just plain wrong. They might pull it as a marketing tactic to get people all heated up to get the game; But in the end, selling copies, as many copies as possible, is way more important than reducing server load on launch week.
They can add server hardware anytime, but they can't add sales anytime. It's basically as easy as that,.
What mmo hasnt sold well in the first few months ? Just because TOR sold well in the beginning means nothing. Lets see 3-6 months down the road when they get competiton from GW2. It isn't how you start its how you finish.
I don't really see GW2 being anymore of a threat to TOR then GW1 was to WoW. If the ball is already moving and TOR is indeed the next WoW (or something simular) GW2 will turn out like the first one and nothing more. That and the thing is B2P I see no reason as to why I can't play TOR for X months unsub play GW2 (Unless they do the whole x-pac every 6 months crap in which case I may pass up) for a month then resub to TOR.
This should come as a surprise to absolutely no one. Not just because all MMORPGs sell well at first, but Amazon is literally the only place where you can buy the game internationally. Because Origin blocks everyone but a select few countries from buying. But you can import from Amazon.
I love the other thread asking if they are lying about limiting sales.
I can't wait to hear all the wailing and screaming from people who can't get a copy or have to wait on a waiting list.
You didn't actually understand what was being saud in 'that other thread' at all, that much is obvious.
In it it was asked if they were lying about limiting SALES on pre orders, which it's obvious they are as a marketing scare tactic.
It did NOT talk at all about the plan of limiting access on day one.
They are not the same things at all, so cut back the gloating (especially on a subject you show so little understanding of).
But yes, I can't wait to hear all the 'wailing and screaming' when people who have pre ordered cannot get in on day one either. It will make launch day interesting.

People who pre-ordered get in during the head start, so this isn't even a valid point.
fond memory's of almost a decade ago in a galaxy far far away xD
What i dont get is:
300 million spend on a mmo or close to it.
And then saying limited copies for sale......
Something aint right here wont you agree ?
Its a marketing strategy as far as i can see.
Making people preorder the game asap to get preorders numbers as high as posible to impress share holders and boost sales.
You cant tell me you have the biggest budget ever and cannot print enough copies to sell for the store shelves.
Or they are affraid they buy 400 servers and only 4 servers get filled and investing to much money on hardware.
I hope they succeed, but in all honesty with a budget like they had SWtor should have been much much better in any way posible.
Engine
Animations
Gameplay
less WoW gimmicks more SW universe related gimmicks
Expample1
Starwars have a whole universe filled with worlds and solar systems - use (Eve) as an example here
How imbah would it be to explore the universe and settle down on a planet with your guilds/legion/Alliance and defend/attacks planets from there.
On the ground and in spaceships.
Combat Animations are realy slow and low paced.
Gameplay idem dito - Slow paced like the animations
Lots of stuff they implemented are straight from wow.
Not gonne name them all but you know what i mean.
Maybe i was expecting to much ?
Maybe the project would become to big with Eve style universe exploration, but i see it as a missed opertunity to get the best of 2 worlds and how unique SW could have been.
They had the budget to make the most brutal mmo ever created.
But lacked the balls to do it and walked a a save path and made a traditional mmo clone of what we already played for the last 1.5 decade.
Missed opertunity if you ask me and main reason i wont touch Starwars anymore.
Waiting for GW2 / Diablo 3 now and hope some other developers can make the ultimate (hardcore) mmo filled with sovereignity / political systems / and alliances of guids/legions forming big clusters of power with massive wars between the empire and the Republic.

I think it's a combination of a marketing strategy and a "play-it-safe"-strategy. Where the second giving birth to the first. It's not as simple as "Hey, we have a gazzillion dollarz, we can do anything". Also, as a project grows to this magnitude, the expenses grows exponentially. A $300m game is not necessarily 100% "better" then a $150m game, it's probably more in the 10-20% region. Add another $150m and it might get 5-10% "better". Think of it as building a tall building. The first few floors are cheap, but the higher up you get the more it costs to build, even tho all the floors look pretty much the same (i don't know if that's actually 100% true in reality, but you get the point).

their not lying about the 'limited numbers' when it comes to copies of the game, its just that its only the collectors edition that has limited numbers, so while its not exactly a lie.. its just 'playing' with the truth.. anyone buying the regular edition of the game shouldnt have any problems.
I picked up a copy of the pre-order box from Hmv. Put the code in and am set. But, what i'd like to know is say they let me in afew days early to the game now, like the 17th of dec, do they want people who pre-ordered to just download the entire game digitally, then on release day race out to the shops and get the box just for the code?

'Early Head Start' is for people who did 'pre-order' and registered the code (which you have said you have done).
This allows you to download the game and play until the 20th (if US) / 22nd (EU). On the 20th / 22nd, you have to put in the actual CDKEY you get from the physical copy to continue playing.

There is the explanation! Swedish people are obviously genetically attracted to words starting with "sw".
Every detractor can sleep happily now and keep on detracting.
Right? ;-)
