Too bad that we missed Nineteen Eighty-Four. Brave New World is still possible, I suppose.
Hmm, there are a lot of dystopia settings up for grabs.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
I'm reading Neal Stephenson's new book at the moment, and I honestly wouldn't mind playing the MMO he dreamed up for it. It's called T'rain (short for Terrain) and seems to have some interesting mechanics. A bit minecrafty, a bit questy, open world PvP and a hint at World Events, from what I've gleaned so far it's a pretty nifty-sounding sandpark (themebox?).
It is sword'n'board fantasy though, and I'm kind of burned out on that. I'd like to see a good cyberpunk MMO, and I'm looking forward to seeing what CCP do with WoD.
How about an MMO based on the tv show "Sliders"? You could slide from one dimension to the next and it would allow for any and all possibilities for gameplay. Anything from dinosaurs to magic to a world where Germany won the war would be possible content. The sky would be the limit.
I like this idea. Each 'zone' would essentially be a totally different MMO, and you could only stay for a certain amount of time.
Blade Runner -better trailer than the 1st I posted.
- recut trail"More Human than Human" is our motto.
Dark and gritty, I love it. I sure wouldn't want to be the one making it though. I find most games that shoot for urban decay end up looking far too plastic for my liking. I want gritty, not Barbie and Ken's city adventure.
Ken Fisher - Semi retired old fart Network Administrator, now working in Network Security. I don't Forum PVP. If you feel I've attacked you, it was probably by accident. When I don't understand, I ask. Such is not intended as criticism.
Survival Horror. Thoroughly atmospheric survival horror. It could be traditional, sci-fi, post-apocalyptic, what-evs. The type of game where you can get better equips or supplies, but nothing that actually makes you feel safe in the enviroment. There is no such thing as OP, unless you're talking about the occaisonal "ohgodohgodohgod" creature that just arrived to have it's way with your face. Which would be, admittedly, a challenge in an MMO environment. But I think it could be done! They could go Silent Hill style, with tons of fog obscuring what's coming at you. It is a horrible abomination that wants to wear your ribs as a hat? Or is it another player, a potential ally that could help you against said creatures? Do you attack or hold? You have decide now, because it looks likes its running right for you.
Death would have to hurt, to the point of equipment loss and de-buffs. PvP would need to be open world (something I don't really like in standard fantasy mmorpgs but think would be important for this kind of game.) Fog could be used to for zoning, and to make things truly awesome, zoning would be random. Youthink you know where you are? Where you're going? Think you're gonna meet up with some friends over yonder and kick some monster business? Well think again, because you just ended up falling into a sewer system of Awful and Pain.
x: Would be pretty niche, because I know that sort of inconvenience turns people off, but I think much of the survival horror crowd would enjoy such an mmo, since we like pain as long as it's the kind of pain that scares the crap out of us.
I'd make a discworld themed MMO. Basically high fantasy but poking fun at fantasy cliches, and in true discworld style, would also poke fun at MMOs in general.
Things like having the option to ask a quest giver why doesn't he just call an exterminator to deal with his rabbit infestation instead of asking a bunch of strangers to kill 10 rabbits each.
Well the ending and beyond would make a fantastic setting for a MMO.
When you start the game after leaving your ejected escape pod.
----------
Also a bit beyond the setting, games have become so complacent , no one is trying to be very innovative anymore.
CCP is talking about Permanant death to your character in World of Darkness. This really entrigues me. But i want to take it a step further. What about having families ? Children you teach, and progress with, and when you by chance have an untimely death you transfer over to one of your offspring. I dunno would need to be fleshed out more and have a better explanation then that.

Oh and a fully integrated Shadowrun or Battletech MMO would get me for life, even better Crimson Skies. FASA had so many good ideas that go hand in hand with the idea of an MMO.
I would love an Assassin's Creed MMO or a Grand Theft Auto MMO (not an APB style crapfest).
Assassin's Creed is the one IP that would probably get my kid interested in an MMO besides his rare appearances in Runescape. If he's any indication of his age range, it might be one worth looking at for developers interested in converting console players to MMOs.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
Norse mythology with the darkest of themes. No magics for players and realistic, hopefully even a bit slower and far more manual combat (no special skills 1, 2, 3, 6... for warriors or archers etc.) The game could easily be expanded by adding expansions such as north Britannia which players could raid together, and then trade all around the northern-/eastern europe or why not add an expansion for Iceland, which players would populate and expand to together, even building their own towns / trading posts over time.
And no holding back with realistic gore, tits and blood... Make it at least rated Mature.
yeah, Dune would be awesome if it was done right. However, I think Shadowrun was made to be an MMORPG. It wouldn't be near as tricky as something like Dune.
Shadowrun I would liek to see, have always enjoyed that setting. Used to play shadowrun PnP years ago.
TSW is one setting I am looking foreward too. Just worried about funcoms ability to pull it off without waiting a year or 2 for the game to be playable.

Star Wars Galaxies 2 ....NOT made by SOE! Let me be part of the greatest adventure in the universe, again . . . Mine.
A hybrid sandbox/themepark. It would have everything folks liked about SWG of old and recent.
I am basically only interested in goold old classic fantasy.
Sooooo ... Firefly MMO would be great, except the setting is crap.
... why exactly is the MMO then GREAT ?
Firefly is an OK setting for a Whedon TV show. For a MMO, you would need to create the other 99% of the world first.

What can men do against such reckless hate?
cyberpunk and/or mecha. both down-to-earth. endgame from hour 01. bring people together.
one based off of xenogears
Anyone seen the movie Pandorum ?

My vote is for Shadowrun, with an enormous budget!
TRON.
I think it would fail though.

Sci-fi: Mass Effect(Pre-Mass Effect 1 with Krogans as one faction, Council races as one and humans as one.)
Medieval/Fantasy: The Witcher series. (I loved the Witcher novels)
