    DUNE MMORPG

  • astoriaastoria Member UncommonPosts: 1,677

I posted this before, but again...

I think an MMO based on the Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi would be an excellent IP.

It is post-apocalyptic but not in a usual way.

It is a post-monoculture-blight scenario. (i.e. people farmed too few crops and a virus/bacterium was able to wipe out most plants on earth).

So some major game element would be crafting new food strains, fighting over the scare resources, and workable (non dustbowl) land. So food would essentially have decay of varying speed. And unlike other games you would get increasing debuffs by NOT eating not a buff from eating.

The other major factor in the book is that they have bio-engineered animals as well, including humans. The Windups are not machines as the name would imply, it is just a derogatory term. They are bio engineered humans to be slaves; strong, fast, but with little willpower. The book is about one fighting her programming.

There are also bioengineered giant elephants, cats mixed with chameleon DNA that can blend into the surroundings that are the new apex predators.

The last major factor is a near depletion of fossil fuels. So most everything is bio powered, i.e. back to horses, buggies, and some spring action devices.

The setting would be a slightly decayed modern world, though without the nuclear destruction elements typical of many post-apocalyptic scenarios.

The book is also probably a good guide to how our children will be living so I highly recommend it.

I think it would fail though.

Since Disney owns the license, this one would be tough, cause we all know what type of games Disney makes image

If TRON was made for a more of a mature audience of mmo players and not kiddies 5+ and up, then I can see this happening.

Look what happened to SWG when they Kiddfied that mmorpg.

    Two ideas:

    1. a game where we play congressman and sentators.  That way you wouldn't have to worry about stats like intelligence or wisdon.  You would have stats like deception, charisma.  Factions would be Left or Right.  You could gain exp by giving Walmart tax breaks or cheating on your wife without being discovered.

    2. Gilligan's Island: Skipper = ranger, Gilligan = tank, Professor = alchemist / healer, Millionaire = archer, Movie Star = bard.

A Blade Runner MMO would be sweet.

Other then that, pick anything from the comic Heavy Metal. 70's/80's twisted "for-grown-ups" Sci-Fi/Fantasy, love it.

    1.RIFTS

    2. Naruto

    3. The anime 12 Kingdoms aka Junni Kokki (watch it if you've never seen it)

    4.Cowboy Bebop

5.Apocalypse World (a pen and paper game)/Postman (the movie) setting

    6.Astro City (the comic book)

7.Dune (mix up the original with the sci fi network series)

8.Farscape (where the hell is this?)

    9. A  Three Kingdoms kick ass martial arts MMO, I want my monks back dammit! This game must be Wuxia (flying crazy monks with ridiculous weapons and abilities)

    10. You wouldnt wan't to see a MMO based off of Yu Yu Hakusho? (the anime)

    11. GOR (based off of the books) look it up if you don't know about it. and yes you could take out the underlying sexual elements. Gor is just a cool setting period.

    12. Masters of the Universe (where the hell is this?) Base it off of the ridiculously cool Cartoon Network version of the show which was damn good.

13, TRAVELLER (based off of the pen and paper game) WHY IS THIS GAME NOT OUT? SCREW FIREFLY I WANT TRAVELLER, WHICH IS FIREFLY WITH ALIENS WHY WOULD I  WANT TO PLAY A SCI FI GAME WITH NO ALIENS?

Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!

Talking about Disney I would like to see a MMO that has some kind of corrupted Disney Flavour (or any other IP in that direction) . Yes sure it is a little strange but it is just the effect that I would want. I once had a nightmare after watching my first horror movie, well and I was about 8 to 10 and I was regulary reading Mickey Mouse stuff. You know where I am heading. Similiar what American McGee didwith Alice's Adventures in Wonderland again^^. (Alice: Madness Returns)

    Else

An Endtime scenario where aliens have taken over a fantasy universe.

Positive fighthing Negative... Where everthing is dramatically exaggerated in terms of stereotypes. Like in Overlord... A world that simply does not take itself serious.

Pacman online, huge gameworld with focus on Open World PVP... -.-

Everything that is absolutely redicously automatically grabs my attention

Post apocalyptic where human-kind literally has to start over from scratch.

You might be in luck getting something close to this with Age of Wulin

I read the books when I was a kid, were pretty interesting as well as Prisoner of the Horned Helm and the rest of the Death Dealer series and Conan books.

    Fishing/Hunting/Farming/Economy/Property Management/Biology/Racing/Poker.

Fishing- with lures and natural and live baits. Ability to manage ponds, breed fish and live bait and setup and control fish management area's. Boat and bank angling opportunities, rewards, taxidermy, biology.

The rest are the same based on each field. Fishing , Hunting, farming etc. Racing and poker doesn't have to be player managed.

    Crafting of course.

    Housing

It could be on the moon for all I care, but I prefer earth so we can educate the public and have fun doing so.

Imagine the gameworld! Magic, questing and Quidditch games on brooms, but in a darker setting.

    You know the factions too..:)

A survival horror MMO that used one of  Heay Metal's story arcs would be beast.

Anything that doesn't have elves, dwarves, or spaceships.

As someone mentioned earlier, a Wild, Wild West MMO would be awesome.

Zombies. Lots of zombies. Preferably set anywhere from the 1870s to the 1960s.

Wow, I was clicking this thread to post something very similar.  You know the atmosphere of FFVI?  That's what I was thinking, in particular.  Nothing cyberpunk or crazy like FFVII, but a lot of old world locations with obvious use of magic and mechanics.  Good choice!

Mechwarrior Virtual World Sandpark pre-clan timeline.

Economy and Crafting while rerssoruces be lacking so the hunt for ressources is a big driving motivation, also the exploration for lostech etc.
Boring parts of crafting like mass production of ammunition can be automated while developing of prototypes is up to the players to experiemnt with it like in SWG.

Uneven No. of warring houses with rvr in the borderzones.
Safe PVE in any not borderzone.

    Poltics.

    Solaris - E-Sport type PvP.

Pirate Kingdoms / Chaos Marks FFA PvP.

    Space/World Exploration.

Combat ranging from Battlemch fight, Airfight, Spacefight, Armored Infantrie to Special Forces combat.

Crime in the Slum/Ghetto/Entertainement areas of Cities.

No force to take part in game elements, only oportunities.

FPS-Combat is possible in the parts of the game like Solaris, Special Forces combat missions etc.

    Mechs be cool.

The series would need a rejuvenation first as the lack of games in the last ten years made it an almost forgotten IP.

    1) Magitech Clock-/Steam-/Diesel- + Dungeon-Punk (think low-tech Shadowrun).

    2) Sub-Aquatic Transhuman Dystopia (think Transhuman Space's 'Under Pressure' + 'Broken Dreams' meets 'Seaquest DSV' [for the underseas colonies]).

    3) Magitech Post-Apocalypse/Disaster-world (think Rifts but more balanced & designed to prevent Power-creep).

All of the above should be Skill/Attribute based, not Class/Level based.

That stuff only interests europeans and Asians who don't live in the SouthWest during the summer.
