With all the awesome new things coming to GW2, it might feel very fresh at release, and capture new and old players straight away... Most people will be thrilled. Oh how much we love this new awesome MMO that changed the genre forever.
But do you people all realise that despite all the nice new features GW2 will feel just like a traditional MMO after a few months of playing it? Once you can look passed the new mechanismes, there is just another MMO beneath that blanket. I hope you like MMMO's enough to survive this .....
If you grew tired of current MMO's and dont like the current mechanics very much chances are big that in the end you will grow tired of this one too sooner or later. People that dont like current MMO combat mechanics might also grow tired of GW2 in a few months. Maybe they just don't like MMO's enough...
I think by the time people realise this, they will start trashing this game like they do now with all other current MMO's and a few popular future ones. Saying that the game was far less revolutionary as promissed. But the only ones that promissed themselves a revolution is their own kind of people. People that just dont like the MMO genre enough....
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

And how do you know this? Have you played it for months?? Im sorry but this just seems like you have been reading too much bad stuff from other games and just want to throw some dirt.....
GW2 will lose that new, fresh feeling after a while. That's a given, that happens with literally everything.
But after months of playing GW2 and that feeling goes away it won't feel like playing a traditional MMO.
Want to know why? Its because GW2 isn't a traditional MMO. GW2 can't feel like what it isn't.
I've been saying similar things, when the novelty wears off, all you really have is the same ol'.
But, I will say, sometimes, just sometimes, even the same tried and true systems that we've all seen, or even the common similarities between MMOs can still be immensely fun when presented properly.
Will there be longevity in GW2? I don't know the answer to that one, I haven't played it. My guess? More longevity than GW1. How much more? No telling.
What's important for me isn't how amazing it will be until the end of time due to a few innovations; it is the idea that they innovated at all.
Very few games coming out do enough to break the mold, and while Guild Wars 2 doesn't take enormous steps beyond anything we've seen before, it takes steps, and that's more than can be said for other games.
What I want is for developers to stop repeating the same formula. Other genres that can rely on storyline can and will continue as they have been (ever seen an "innovative" Zelda game?), but MMORPGs requires far more from people than single player games, and therefore must provide more to keep them interested. The same mold won't work forever, and ArenaNet seems to know this.
The positive outcome of this game's success will be to thump all the other developers on the head with a wakeup call that says, "Hey, quit with the clones."
Sarcasm is not a crime!
Not everyone will love GW2 just like not everyone loved the original GW. Will there be haters? Yes! But that's to be expected. It's the nature of the MMO gamer.
Really? Does this thread really lead to any kind of constructive discussion?
Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.
I really don't expect any game to capture my interest for more than 3 or 4 months at a time. I mean, looking at my history, I played WoW, EQ, and UO for probably 6 or 7 months in total with several breaks between.
But newer games like Rift, AoC, and WAR...I've probably only played them a month or so before they got old to me.
If I play and enjoy GW2 for roughly the same amount of time that I played and enjoyed WoW, EQ, and UO; then I will call it a success in my book.
Also, I don't really get the point of this thread...
Everything gets old in the world of video games, that's why constant innovation is a must. WoW was fresh when it came out, now many feel that its concepts are old and they want something new. The same will happen with GW2.
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
If you like my game is better than your game arguments, then sure.
Yah, that's what it looks like it will end up in. To many of those have been started today on other games forums so one was bound to start here.
TOR boys gotta get their kicks in while they can.
True, once TOR releases they won't be around here very often.
I am going to treat GW2 like I did GW1, just something to pass some time. I think the gameplay changes will be interesting. I think that the dynamic events are a hook; something for them to talk about why the game is special (probably because explaining the gameplay changes from the traditional mmo is too confusing for most people to understand in an advertisement or trailer).
Dynamic events are a bit of a joke IMO; someday we will have virtual worlds that are completely dynamic in all ways and you can modify them the same ways you can effect the real world. We will look back at features like dynamic events, tacked onto a themepark mmo, and laugh about it.
The reason I thought GW1 was worth my time was not why I love MMOs, it was not the community or the immersion, it was simply:
simple yet ridiculously complex gameplay via the 8-skill slot system
no level or gear grinding
pretty, interesting world and primary storyline
decent class combinations (way better than most traditional mmos, but still crummy compared to a classless system)
game was built for team PvP, adapted for PvE (not the other way around)

Except the entire premesis of the thread is that all MMOs apparently suck? Isn't this kind of out of place at a site called MMORPG.com?

I havent looked into everything with the game, but the WvWvW stuff is exciting and not a very normal mechanic...People are shying away from 3 sides fighting. I do hope the 'home' zones for each server can be changed up or like atleast a set of 6 or something so that not every home zone is exactly the same.
As for the premise that people that don't like a lot of current mmos, just don't like mmos is bull. We have a few threads already about that, that are lame....Did we need them from each mmo also? Just because a child is fascinated with a marble, doesn't mean an adult should be!
All I've played is the demo and from that I got the opposite feeling, they've nailed the starting system perfectly, you get thrown straight in to action with combat mechanics that immediately feel familiar to ANY game player. The starter DE's for the charr flowed incredibly naturally, after any initial surprise you soon get used to them turning up and disappearing as you move from area to area, there's very little effort needed to get used to any new mechanic if you choose to go with the flow of events. It is immediately accessible. The real differences of the game won't turn up until you've played for a while by which time you'll be growing in to them. that's the beauty of the DE system, of course you're being led through level appropriate content but it never felt like you were being put on rails, there's a choice of if to get involved and how to get involved, that change alone makes the world a much more natural place to be in. Longevity we can only speculate on, forty minutes of a demo isn't going to give me any real view on that question, I do know though it is not just another MMO.
Well no sh!t. I thought we're going to have the same mechanics for centuries! And I agree.. flying cars are going to look extremely stupid when we invent personal spaceships. You know.. AFTER we invent flying cars that is..
Eat me!
I predict the only people who will leave GW2 and will trash it are the ones who likes the traditional style, which is contrary to what you are saying.
Ready for GW2!!!
I disagree, I predict it will go the same route as the first one (Maybe a little less). High box sales low retention rate, I think people will play it for X months get bored with it and go bad to what ever else they were playing.
IMO the OP is sorta right but missing the point.
Of course the game is gonna eventually start to feel old. It may takes 7 months or it make take several years. However eventually it will become old and stale because that is what games do.
The point being missed is that you paid 50-60 bucks for a game that you will be enjoying for possibly years.
Thats a hell of a value.... its not hard to watch the plethora of GW2 gameplay videos on youtube and read the info in the wiki and imagin yourself playing the characters. The game will be hella fun. Lets just be gratefull for that shall we... cause for several years now almost every game has been a borefest right out of the gate.
"Don't mistake a fun game for a good game... Checkers is fun to play but its not exactly the highest point of gaming design... and definatly not worth $60 plus $15 a month"
This...What he/she said!
the new systems have to have a familair feeling...or else as soon as someone fails to understand the concepts they are a lost player (something i feel most sandboxes suffer from).
GW2 feels (from the demos I have played) natural to any MMO player, where the news things come into play is weapon swaping to change your role, and the DEs.
personally i thought the DEs felt very smooth and the progression was very nice as one moves throught out zones (not in like a rail progression but the progress as you physcially run through the zone you see how areas are different and then when the DEs interchange it is remarkable)
the weapon changing ,its <tbh> a little akward. however i assume they will open up keympping in the game so this will be solved with some changes.
Not too worried about it. I still play games from years ago and they've long since lost the new car smell. Quality is the gift that keeps on giving, even after you've long since unwrapped it.
After I've had enough time with GW2 that it starts losing its luster, I am going to play a different MMO. I will look for an MMO that brings new ideas into play, and GW2 will feel like the old generation.
Yep
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.
It seems to me that there are some people who still doubt that GW2 is actually different from other MMOs. To help those people, let me explain WHY this game is different.
First, The game is different because it is NOT trying to be the same kind of game as many other MMOs at their most basic levels. Most other games have PvE set up so that, while you can play as a group with other people, there is no real way to integrate more than a small group into the same content. Quests are likewise unsuitable for group content most of the time, given that all the people involved must have the quest and not have done the quest before, and that often times the objective of the quest is to collect loot from kills (and you can't share with your group). Occasionally, spawn areas will be occupied and you will not be able to do a quest because others are in the way. These problems indicate that traditional MMO PvE content is not designed with the though of people helping each other. One look at GW2 shows that it is ENTIRELY designed around people playing together working towards the same goal.
Second, no gear treadmill, no level grind, no trinity, dynamic events, branching personal story, voice over content, and a number of different things that other games don't have but are all small improvements over previous MMOs. Lots of little things can go a long way.
Third, combat is designed to be active and fast paced, without punishing players who cannot play twitch based games. From my personal experience, the sheer amount of mobility makes other games feel stiff by comparison.
Forth, there is a heavy focus on getting players' eye off the UI and on the actual fight by providing visual ques with big animations and taking away the ability to target allies with skills.
There are things that could seem like they would lead people to feeling like they are playing the same game, such as the way some events are similar to a traditional MMO's quests. I have seen complaints about an escort event that TotalBiscuit played at EuroGamer, but how is having similar objectives implemented in radically different ways going to make people feel like they are playing the same old game? I don't believe that this will be the case. I also know a lot of people who are going to try and do the things they did in other games (dungeons and PvP) and I think they the explorable dungeons will be quite unique and interesting to those gamers and that WvWvW will be a fairly good system for people who like open world PvP.
Lastly, there is a counter argument that I can make to the original OP. If GW2 stops feeling new and fresh (and hopefully players will still find it at least enjoyable and fun after that time passes), I believe that going back to other MMOs would be difficult for some of those people.
I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.
You're making it sound like it's a bad thing. :P
As for me, I hate people who plays new games and compare it to a traditional MMO and say how the new one is not even close in comparison. I bid these players good riddance because I have enjoyed GW1, which also had many criticism about it being not a traditionall MMO, and I will sure enjoy GW2 for many years also.
The MMO-traditionalist can play other games and leave Tyria. It's not a bad thing.
Ready for GW2!!!
