I remember when I first saw Star Wars in a cinema in Kuala Lumpur. Came kind of late to Malaysia and I saw it 5 times over the next few days. I was always very different from the other girls in my class and was into science fiction and fantasy like my mum was. (Thank you mum for introducing me to Tolkien and Gormenghast ) I read all the books and I was just so into it for so long.
Over the years no movie franchise aside from perhaps Alien really got to me like that and I wanted to be part of that world ever since I started playing Everquest. When SWG online was betaing I was on cloud 9 but that game never grabbed me and I was not into it so much sorry you SWG online fans but that was how I felt.
Now Bioware I love .Their Mass Effect games make me feel like I am part of the world so much and they do RPG so well with Neverwinter Nights and KOTOR even and Dragon Age 1. I just feel inside me they will do this the way I will want to play and make me part of the Star Wars Galaxy . Part of something I have daydreamed and wrote fanfiction (admitedly bad) about. So yes it is perhaps blind faith but think about how many other people out there are like me and even more people who just love Star Wars and have no game playing background and hence can be introduced to it via a Bioware game. Wouldn't you want your RPG cherry to popped by Bioware ?
So basically, I belly laugh at this list of 'features'
You'd might make a good Hutt.
Anyway, not worth my time to point out the staggering amount of fallacies and prejudices in your reply. Hope you don't mind. It seems you pretty much made up your mind and I won't be able to convince you anyway. I guess we'll have to wait for NDA drops / launch to see how it will pan out.
This is a genuine question. Why exactly has SW:TOR got everybody talking about it as if it's the next big thing?
I've never been interested in Star Wars at all really, it just didn't appeal to me, but it seems there's already so many people who can't wait for it to come out. I would have thought that it'd have a limited amount of people interested in it, as it's Star Wars & anybody who isn't really interested in it (such as myself) wouldn't buy it, although that doesn't seem to be the case. It seems to be that even non Star Wars fans are highly anticipating the release of this game.
I've not read much at all about SW:TOR as it's not been something I've bothered reading up on, although considering it's the talk of most MMO websites these days, I'm wondering why exactly.
This has to be the most retarded first post I've ever seen, and I'm literally talking about retarded in a "mentally challenged" way.
If you want to start a discussion about "why Star Wars is so popular" or rant about "lol I don't liek SW, why does everybody else!?!?", fine...
But asking "Why is SW:TOR So Popular?" and continuing with "This is a genuine question". Then let me give you the answer conveniently boiled down to IQ 70 level.

Its not often MMOers get something new they have been asking for. I can tell you tor has everything a standard MMO has but it also has a story that will drive the player. BW has done story RPG better then anyone in the game biz. Bringing this type of story telling to your char will give you a connection you will never have felt before. This is the MMO that will set the standard to come. MMOers will tell others to stop comparing new MMOs to.

While I'm a fan of the Dragon Age 1 and the Mass Effect series, Neverwinter Nights and the old Baldurs' Gates, Biowares plots are nowhere near the epitome of dramatic storytelling.
In fact, while being inferior in terms of pacing, Bethesda has managed to pump out stories and events that got me on the verge of emotional involvement, e.g. the Dark Brotherhood line in Oblivion, lots of in-a-box quests in Fallout 3, practically the whole Morrowind social construct was refreshingly innovative. Biowares stuff never got anywhere near this... Way too much "the good, the bad and what you oughta do to make things right".
And in terms of pacing and complexity, in my book, Witcher 2 easily outshines any recent Bioware games being borderline comparative to real dramatic entertainment such as likeminded books (Song of Ice and Fire for example).
And, Bioware is nowhere near infallible. Dragon Age II was a downright bad game. And Neverwinter Nights II also didn't meet my expectations.
The one company that only delivered games I genuinely enjoyed is - I hate to admit it - Blizzard Entertainment.
1. Star Wars - It may not appeal to you OP, but it has one of the largest fanbases of any IP in the world.
2. Bioware - Great company with a history of making great games. Huge and loyal fanbase of the developer. Will attract both MMO veterans and new MMO players.
3. Set in the same universe as KOTOR - One of the most celebrated Star Wars games of all time and one of my very favorite RPGs.
4. The first Fully-voiced MMO - No one has done this yet. Many people think it will make the game feel less grindy. I happen to agree.

I'd say in terms of pacing Bioware games have been better than the witcher series. While the witcher's stories are good (they should be considering the source material) their pacing left something to be desired for me, too much beating around the bush IMO.
As to the difference between Bethesda's storytelling and Biowares. While I prefer TES's approach in how they create their worlds and fill them with information about them. The dialogue as well as animations that follow it, has always been lacking, no emotion, stone faced expressionless NPC's, no body language, etc.. These minor details can make a world of difference in a stories presentation and feeling. Bioware focuses on the whole story package Bethesda doesn't. Then again they have a crap ton more going on in their games so it's understandable.

Fanboys thats the only reason, the game offers nothing new, nothing unique, just another world of warcraft clone/copy with a new skin, but fanboys think its the best thing since sliced bread. Box sales will be huge but, after the free month alot/most will quit just like with rift, which is another biliant wow clone. It'll still be profitable for bioware regardless though. But SWToR is not gonna be the revolutionary mmo everyone thinks/wants it to be. I was gonna preorder till I seen the combat, which to me just looked slow, and slow combat just doesn't sit well with me, especally when its with a lightsaber when their known for their deadlyness, in this game they seem like hitting the mobs with a stick. Lost almost all interest, I just lurk around here to say "I told you so" when the game totally fails to live up to any hype at all. Day after release till will probally be a flood of threads complaing how the game is lackluster, how its just a boring wow clone etc, all over the internet. This is also a bad time to be releasing a wow clone wow has finally lost its steam and is steadly losing subscribers as people become less interested in that style of gameplay.

About Dragon Age 2, DA2 was nothing but a money grab, they rushed the devolopment of DA2 and made it in less than 8 months which is a extremly short time for something as time taking as a rpg. They rushed it to cash in on DA's popularity, but in doing so they turned alot of people off to the series due to how bad DA2 was compared to the first. I loved DA2's new combat but everything else about the game was bland, boring, unintersting. Bioware also has to stop reusing the exact same story in every single one of their games just worded diffrently, if you pay attention you'll notice the story in every bioware game is essentally the exact same thing. SWToR's class based quests will be no diffrent, it'll be the exact same story told multiple diff ways, they've done it in all their other games why would they do anything diffrent now? not when so many of their fanboys never relize the story is identical between their games.
About NWN2.. I could never get into nwn2 like I could the first one, I never was able to figure out why, just something about nwn2 didn't appeal to me.

Pot meet Kettle though I'm not sure you will understand what I'm saying with that. A smarter person would realize he is asking why its so popular besides the fact that its Star wars. The truth is other than its Star wars the only other reasons I can think of is Bioware and other than dragon age 2 has a habbit of making verry good storylines.
I have actually started looking into the game more since all of the "just another wow clone" stuff has been showing up on media sites and beta leak websites. Truth is while it does sound like the Typical Themepark MMO, which isnt really a bad thing, they are doing some things well. What they are doing is taking the best parts of various themepark MMO's and expanding on them slightly.
So with that said what SW:ToR is to me is not WoW 2.0. Its Themepark giant 2.0 if they pull off everything they are saying. In another words while its your typical themepark MMO it is taking all the best aspects and improving on them. Personally I think thats a good thing.
Oh and while I think its a good thing I AM one of thoes people not interested in the game. Just because I am not interested doesnt mean its not going to be an awesome game. LOTRO had the IP and a verry good Dev team and failed to be Themepark Giant 2.0 but I think SW could verry well pull it off.
Fanboys thats the only reason, the game offers nothing new, nothing unique, just another world of warcraft clone/copy with a new skin, but fanboys think its the best thing since sliced bread. There are many things SWTOR does differently from other MMOs, whether you choose to admit that or not. Obviously you are biased against the game (which is your perrogative), but that does not make your assertions true.

I am not sure why the increasing popularity of SLOW combat systems in all the upcoming releases surprises anyone at all. Its the new trend for profitablity. MMORPGs are meant to be time sinks. They give you something to do and more often than not it boils down to bashing ten baddies for loot and tails to string for a quest completion reward. The longer they can make that take the better because it means they don't have to do something innovative or add more content. Cheap... Occupies you... vaguely, kinda, sorta fun for the thirty minutes you're expected to play before logging off to do something else at home.
