I'm sorry...I've seen the exact same argument the OP outlined on other websites and it still sounds an awful lot like a conspiracy theory to me. If people like the OP actually bothered to do a little research instead of just copy/pasting quotes from Blizzcon they would have discovered a few key points to remember:
1. The pet-battle system, while having similarities to Pokemon, is solving an issue that players have had since the game first came out: what do we do with our companion pets? Blizzard first tried to solve the problem by having certain pets perform little animations but even then Blizzard eventually realized that players wanted more so they devised an entirely seperate progression system for all of those cute yet rather useless companion pets just gathering dust in our inventories.
I've never said to myself, wow I wish my companion pet did something. I never saw the point in the robot fights myself. I don't think there was much clamoring for a pet battle system. I personally don't think the time spent on it was well worth it, but as long as a lot of people do then that's fine.
OP is CLEARLY WOW + Blizzard hatter. It is obvious a company would aim for the maximum incentive. If someone in the west like it, good for them, if others don't then move on.

I mean honestly I never thought they'd do it, but yeah I had hoped they'd do something with companion pets that made them more interative, and I'm rather pleasently surprised.
OP is CLEARLY WOW + Blizzard hatter. It is obvious a company would aim for the maximum incentive. If someone in the west like it, good for them, if others don't then move on.
I have played WoW for 6 1/2 years, 'hard core' raider for about 5 of those. I used to multibox and had 5 accounts at one point in time.
I have seen what Gregs class changes did to the guild dynamic, it was like throwing sand in a car engine.
About 60% of players say raiding is important, after several years a balance of tanks/heals/dps emerges in the player base that fits the requirements of the game. Then blizzard mucks it all up and many healers just outright quit in cata leading to a painful chain reaction.
So do they fix rhe problem, no they just make new ones to destroy the social fabric of the game, LFG special rewards for certain classes, now a raid finder.
These are all solutions to problems blizzard made themselves.
So Cata comes out, and the class changes suck, guilds get stuck with more players who want to raid than can because so many healers, raid experienced healers, quit. I have seen several 5 yr old raid guilds just fall apart. And blizzrd is losing 300,000 subs a quarter now, over 3,000 people quit every day, thanks to cataclysm. An aptly named xpac.
So this is the state of WoW, and they not only don't fix the game, they continue to make it worse. Blizzard clearly is diverting resources elsewhere, and it looks like they are going to put WoW out to pasture, a pasture in China.
After 6 1/2 years and over $1500 spent, I for one am not going to pay Blizzard any more money just so they can ditch this market and switch to another. If they want to do that they can spend their own capital to do it.
I, for one, am glad that this expansion giant whining fest is about the Pandas.
Why?
Simple, let's examine the facts:
1) Everytime Blizzard announce an expansion, there is an explosion of whining on the forums around the internet, these included.
2) Usually such whining is along the lines "They are not doing anything new, it is all the same ol'!" to which people that like the expansions answer "yeah! what did you think they were doing, an NGE??"
Now.... what is happening? There is the usual whining, yes, but it is about PANDAS! Nothing about "same ol same ol!" why? because Blizzard is actually changing something and adding new ways to play the game!
This is huge, forget the pandas! embrace the new ways of playing at max level, no more just raiding or pvp! In the face of those whining, this one is quite a small thing.
"If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, if you teach him how to fish, you feed him for a lifetime"
I dont know what the big deal is, but this is not the first time a race made a splash like this, i remember in old eq times when they added the van shir, it was a pretty quiet affair and the few people who didnt like were not that vocal (this is in game btw). But then eq but out frogloks and it made something of affair as many more people didnt like and alot of people fell in love with them. i dont think pandas are going to end wow nor pokemon for that instance. there are probably 1000 people trying to be the first human on thier server to be name ash ketchem or some variant.
Why is it ok for Tera to have a popori race (looks like a teddy bear), GW2 to have Asura, FF to have lalafell, EQ to have frogs and rats but WOW introduces Pandas and all hell breaks lose? i would take Pandas any day over frogs, rats and teddy bears.
Hahahahahahahahahaha! Anyway, I'm excited about the new content, new race and class, suppose I should move to china? I didn't hear all this bullshit when they had Lich king with a Nordic theme. Seriously, I think you're looking a bit far into this. If you don't like it, then head out, or don't come back. Either way, the game will be fine. However... Did you ever think that perhaps Pandarean were added because they were the number one requested race? And that mayhaps the pet battle system was added just to give you something to do with the hundreds of vanity pets?? No you're prolly right. Blizzard is moving on to the asain market and shitting on the rest of us ROFL. For a lot of you, blizzard can do no right at this time, so do us all a favor and play something else. Not everyone hates wow and blizzard. I just signed up for the annual pass, and I'm guessing I won't be alone.
If the norse team would havbe included a lemming race or something else silly you would be fine with it?
It is not a cultural thing that upsets people here, AoC had a Chinese based expansion a while ago and no one gt upset about that.
The issue is that Wow is getting sillier than ever before and to me it seems like they are focusing more on kids and tweens than earlier, not on Chinese people in particular.
ignore WOW for a second, can you imagine if the next version of Call of Duty announced pet battles and space aliens with 'zappo-guns' introduced because the devs knew they would get an extra million kids playing. Ofc they would not do that, there are lines to be drawn or you lose the integrity of a game concept. Ninja Panda's & pet battles is not a million miles away from this compared with the original game vision that the first 3 expansions represented. Got to catch em all!!
As I said a million times already .why is it ok for a guild wars to have a chinese theme expansion and a pokemon-like mini game and not for WoW?
Because WoW =/= GW.
Different game. Different theme. Different setting. Different market.
Just because it works for one game doesn't mean it automatically works for others.

Well there obviously is a difference, something is not right. Possibly balance and integrity of the games core design and respect for the existing veteran player base, GW1 devs considered this.
huh?
So including panda's and pokemon ish battle systems are insulting to their vets?
I'm a vet... I love the ideas...
And other people who are also vets of the game don't like the idea.
Your opinions do not represent that of "All Vets in World of Warcraft".

And who is it to decide what settings work for what game? one can only tell with certainity how well it will work once expac releases. And considering how popular is WOW in asian market, Blizzard is not taking some huge risk.

Ofcourse, like i said it is ok for other MMOS to have childish and cute races. No doubt you find them cool and the best. Shallow runs deep in these forums.
Beijing, China (178) - Trion World's big fantasty title Rift has confirmed to land Korea next year, which has been said as the first step of extending Asia gaming market. Considering the biggest market of mmos, Trion World plans to seek more business opportunities in Asia countries by setting Korea as the first station of Rift.
Now the big title has been operated in over 160 nations worldwide, although still no official statements of being acquired by Chinese producers yet, but since Trion's made this big blueprint, it's only a matter of time for the game shipping to China.

Everyone will love those pokemon fights if done well....
And whats wrong with the Pandaren.... i just love the asian culture and Panda/furries just fit perfectly inthere...
Nothing wrong with the expansion, except the fact that WoW is really getting old...

China (and Asia in general) is everyone's fastest growing market in terms of the future. Even the newest game out, Rift, acknowledges that:
Rift may enter Asia market in future
