So I'd say stick to your gut next time and go gamestop instead of steam...

Hardcopy isnt to useful when, you know, it has steamworks and HAS to be activated on steam.

Skyrim isn't a Valve game. You're talking about Origins, the EA equivalent to Steam.

It dont have to be a Valve game to be intergrated with steam. Any company can opt in to use steamworks stuff it means you will have the DVD but you still need Steam installed to play it.

To those people complaining about steam and saying its the worse thing ever.. I think your could not be futher from the truth, like it said in my other post its probally one fo the best things to happen for PC gaming..

I have brought so many games via steam including some really amazing games that I never would have come accross if it was not for steam. Jsut the other weekend I brought every single GTA game for around £8 inlcuding GTA IV and its extra mission packs.. you dont get those kind of deals anywere else..

I am a happy steam user and have never had an issue with it.

If you buy a game via Steam, obviously it's integrated with Steam. If you buy a DvD though, unless the game is a Valve game, it won't require a Steam installation and the Steam installer won't be included. Skyrim is an EA game, so if they bundle anything with the game, it would be Origins...which may also be running when you start the game up through Steam.

I agree with the sentiment on Steam's benefits out weighting any deficits. I personally haven't had any deficits and overall I'm happy I have Steam available for use.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

I dont know If a troll could be so intellegent to pull one of like this, or if he is genuine i'm still in awe.  I think I read the OP's post half a dozen times, then I thought i'd give the benefit of the doubt and try and explain to him, but then I thought no i'd make myself look stupid answering to a troll.

For now it cost me 50 euros with DRM over past 12 years i play PC games, but its  already my LAST  one lol.

Anger management, bud.  Look into it.

If you're upset that console users get to play a game before PC users, don't foolishly attack the retailers like Steam who are bound by the game publishers to release when they have permission to do so.  If you don't like it, bitch to the publisher.  It's their decision to give consoles preferential treatment.

However, I have a sneaking suspicion that you didn't see what you think you saw and are, in fact, out to lunch.

    Wrong...

I have had many games that have required steam to be installed and actually come with steam on the DVD.

The last now i brought was Homefront and i dont believe that was a valve game. Its because Homefront used steam mainly as a DRM system but also had a ton of steam unlocks and worked with the steam overlay... i beleive they call ti steamworks..http://steampowered.com/steamworks/ . Also the latest Total War game was the same.

Now I am not saying Skyrim will be like this as i have not looked into it at all but it does happen and is a service Valve offer to game companies.

Well then. I stand corrected. Homefront is using Steam's for the anti-cheat software. Interesting. Valve gets more distribution of Steam, game companies can get some proven software and a distribution network for updates.

Since I already have Steam, it wouldn't bother me if Skyrim came bundled with it. EA has their own stuff though. I'm not sure how much they want to push Origins...it really is pretty primitive compared to Steam.

Anyway, Steam is overall a positive to me. If the only complaint is that you have to set Steam in 'Offline' mode to play offline, I don't see that as a big deal at all.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

So I don't see how this it is steams fault that a gameshop in Holland is releasing, illegally, the console version early.

Europe probably has more relaxed distribution laws and are therefore voiding the normal release date.

I was under the impression, though I might be mistaken, that the release date is part of the sales contract between the publisher and distributor?  I'm not familiar with European law, but I'd assume they still have pretty strong contract laws, so the publisher should be able to sue based on breach of contract....

Of course I wouldn't expect to see this happening unless the broken street date occurs on a massive scale.

I worked at a Circuit City (east coast USA) where a manager got caught opening the CDs and DVDs we'd get generally on Saturday for Tuesday releases and putting their ISOs up on the web; from his office PC mind you. He got fired, but that was all we saw of it. The guy then got a job at a local bank (go figure) and just laughed it off.

I'm not sure if Circuit City soaked any extra fees from the Mfcs or Dist Centers and let it slide or what.

If Bethesda wanted to push it I'm sure, but I think it'd be more of a matter in Holland between the distribution contractor and the retailer. If they're both like.. "Well a Friday release just isn't logistical." Which I've seen fairly often with Friday releases (Pokemon loves them for some odd reason) a lot of Asian and European companies just go on the usual release schedule with relative impunity.

I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

Well Skyrim and Bethesda has little to do with EA.

I picked up New Vegas via Steam and couldn't be happier with it, self installing patches that kept talking eye creatures out of my game was a boon. New Vegas authenticated through Steam, but yeah it's had its advantages by doing so.

I think ZeniMax and Valve are buddy buddy it's probably a safe bet that Skyrim will be installable with Steam for acheivement and patching support.

I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

Skyrim is a Bethesda game, which is a subsidiary of ZeniMax. They're not related to EA in anyway.

Though EA is pushing Origin pretty hard for their games. They're not releasing certain new games on Steam, and instead exclusively through Origin -- BF3 and SWTOR the biggest names to date. They're also requiring you to install and activate through Origin for certain new games. For example I bought my wife the latest Sims 3 expansion, and I had to setup an Origin account to activate and patch the game.

Skyrim is not an EA game, Skyrim is developed by Bethesda Game studios and published by Bethesda Softworks and sold retail by Bethesda Softworks, all of which are owned by Zenimax.

Its your choice use steam or not, thats ok guys don't worry.

I for one will not buy any game ever with steam sticker on it after this game just accept this ok i hope you still want freedom of choices right?

If i buy a solo game im the one who say when where and how i play the game not some damn steam.

Skyrim is 100% not playable without steam some here seems to think when its not vavle and you have hardcopy from retail shop you can play it without steam you CAN'T.

Again i don't realy care about PS3/XBOX players can play the game right now, its about not been able as PC gamer for the first time in HISTORY of Elder Scrolls serie i can't play when-how or where i want and thats reason enough for me NO MORE, this is first and last game i play with steam on my retailbox. Seems simple enough guys or you can't understand why someone dont bow to these controll money grabbing bastards companys who own you?

    Have fun gaming i will:)

You decide, not those silly release dates that companies are likely bound by contract to follow.  Steam is not telling you when where or how to play it.  The publisher is.  Your gamestop is breaking the rules, dont get mad at steam for following them.  After the release then you can play all you want forever.  How are the money grabbing?  They are just making you wait till the release date that Bethesda has been screaming in every single video for the past few months.

But, as you have 1000+ posts, I'm almost positive this is a troll attempt because there is no way someone could be so naive.

Hate on steam all you want, but it won't change the fact that pretty much every big name publisher is either moving to use steam or their own platform for game authentication.

EA is using Origin, Blizzard has Battle.net, Ubisoft has their mess of an authentication system, Activision will likely be getting one soon...

As for those people playing Skyrim on PS3 and XBOX, they're playing leaked and illegal versions of the game. Even if they did get a legitimate copy, the store that sold it to them broke the street date and is liable to be fined for doing so.

Welcome to the Internet era of gaming. Get use to it, because the next gen of console will very likely adopt online authentication as well.

    Again, offline mode.

PS3 XBox users CANNOT PLAY SKYRIM YET AS ITS NOT OUT YET!

You sir are simply not listening to anything anyone has to say.

How are they "Money grubbing"  Steam isn't making you pay more for the game than any other retail store would.

What the heck are you on about OP?  Nothing you say makes any logical sense.

  • FalcomithFalcomith Member UncommonPosts: 831

It seems allot here have a misconception that Steam is at fault. Dont you relize that the developer is the one resposible for there software to go through steam or Origins or whatever else is out there. Developers pay for that service. Its a secure way of preventing piracy. Its not 100%, but it makes it a bit more difficult to pirate.

Now about needing Steam to play the game....You only need steam to run it once to activate it after each install...unless its a non-steam required game. You can find the shortcut of the game, (if I remember right since I am at work and cant look it up), in  Program files/Steam/Apps. Just copy the shortcut where you would like it. Now you dont have to open up steam to access it.

If shops are actualy selling the game to be played on Xbox and Ps3 RIGHT NOW they are in violation of international law.

So I'm going to guess you don't know what you are talking about.

HOW is steam controlling when and where and how you play your game?

You click a shortcut it launches game, done, no added confusion, SURE you had to install it through steam, but thats about it.

You are chicken littleing this whole situation.

(Again, Skyrim CANNOT be sold, as in the actual disk handed to a customer, until 11/11/11, if someone violates that their company will be TOTALLY screwed, had a game company near me do an early release of Halo 3, guess what they dont' exsist any more because of the huge lawsuit that forced them to close down shop.)

So you'll forgive me if I think your story of retailers risking their business and their lively hood is met with a bit of doubt.

PS3 XBox users CANNOT PLAY SKYRIM YET AS ITS NOT OUT YET!

You sir are simply not listening to anything anyone has to say.

I don't care if I get banned, but you sir are a fucking idiot.

My brother and his wife live in Rotterdam.

I contacted her on IM this morning asked her to call around and see what she could turn up. Just got a message back from her and she cannot find a single retailer selling Skyrim for any platform, every single one told her the game releases on the 11th and that company policy prevents them from selling it prior to the release date.

Ok great, you aren't upset at ps3 and xbox players having the game before you. Still, the point stands, you should not have the game in your hands.

Should not. Not that it's going to change the world or cure cancer or save the rainsforests if you didnt' get the game at the appropriate time.

but the developers/publishers have set 11/11/11 (which is also corduroy appreciation day) as the release date.

    That's pretty much it.

Its because steam is told and held up by a strict contract not to release the game until the official release. Stores already have the product and can give them out with out more then a slap on the hand/fine. But a developer at anytime can tell steam to remove the product from site because of breach in contract forcing steam to have to refund all the preorders if it is caught before release. So if you want to play the blame game, go blame Bethseda.

Not forever, I'm afraid.  Steam was the first major retail portal for electronic games.  Origin just launched because EA recognized that a platform for downloading games electronically was too important (and too profitable) to share with Steam.  Eventually, every game will be releasing tied to a portal to handle the electronic-only sales.

Steam pioneered it.  Origin is copying it.  Others will follow in their footsteps or get into bed with them.  It's just a matter of time.
