The idea of their being a story is very important to me. The story in GTA IV really fleshed out the game for me and made it interesting, and one of my favorite games of all time is the Marathon series which was like an interactive book. Voice acting at quest screens is not important to me and can be disruptive at times. I would prefer to just read the story/quests rather than listening to some droning bore running on. There are exceptions, though. When the voice actor is Claudia Black playing Morrigan in Dragon Age, then good God that is more interesting than the game itself
Voice acting that occurs in the form of little quips and snarky remarks during combat or at various points of the game, or during interactions with companions you might want to experience more intently than a quest screen, might add a little depth to the game depensing on how it's done. In Age of Conan I was grateful for the point in the game where the voice acting dies down dramatically as it was definitely a chore trying to read quests while the voice acting was interrupting me.
Ideally, one should be able to turn it on or off as per preference.
The quest text now is turned in VO action cutscenes. The down side is that 1/2 of the quests VO(text/story) is just boring. AThe idea is good, but half of the time I want to skip it
I think voice acting is an "ok" idea. I'm still less than thrilled about the concept of listening to potentially boring dialog in some of the upcoming 3rd gen MMO's, including GW2 (though they're still overwriting the dull-sounding placeholders), but it's not a deal breaker unless the VO's are as bad as something like Castlevania: SOTN. I'd reach for mute in a second.
I'm ok with voice acting in general, even if I beleive it''s a waste of money for a MMO (players forced to skip to keep with the group flow). Age of Conan did a good job in the few bits where it actually had voice acting.
However SWTOR touches the uncanny valley area in this aspect when pretty good voices are applied to really creepy Ken and Barbie dolls. I'm not at all against 'cartoony' graphics and models, however there is cartoony, and there is 'barbie doll'. Get what I mean?
i think the voice acting is amazing..me and a freind were in stitches at some of it..especially when you your voice comes across has a dry british sarcastic voice..its funny as f--k
I usually hate questing in games and go out of my way to avoid them if possible. In Wow - I leveled up several characters by doing battlegrounds only (except for the 1st 10 - had no choice)
SWTOR is the MMO I've played where I became involved with the story and actually felt like part of it - love the voice acting and love the game!
Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.
A few days ago, I made a post expressing my concerns and dislikes about the Voice Acting used in SWTOR. I must say that I not a large fan of Starwars. It's ok but I just not a major follower of it.
Now, with watching sooooooo many playing the bata on my real time web site, I must say that I really like this game.
1) Open world is beautiful. Graphics are a change, A good break from the fantasy setting.
2) Love the companion Idea.
3) Love the classes.
4) Having your own ship.
5) Many others
But the voice acting cut scenes will stop my adrenalin flow, as it seems to do with the players I had been watching. I'll try and go into this Fridays bata with an open mind, who knows it may not really be that bad. So many of us will soon find out.
Many of you are hard-core StarWars fans. In fact there are many here that are not normally mmo players, but Hay you love Starwars that much " good for you ".
Now my question is, and please be honest. Do you really like the voice acting or because it's StarWars and a good quality game made by BioWare.
No, not really. It is Sci-Fi, Science Fiction, meaning science fantasy.
I think what they meant is: NO FREAKING ELVES
Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.

Yes. This. The voice acting is top notch, and really gives a more immersive feel to the world around you.
I can't speak for anyone else, but after playing SWTOR, I don't think I could ever go back to text-based quests again. It's as simple as that.
