My humble opinion: Rift was a solid game but it offered nothing new, so I felt like I was playing the same game all over again. SWTOR offers enough new things, along with the change in style to sci fi, to make me feel like I'm playing a NEW game. Good enough for me.
I'm gonna end this discussion right now by saying this:
The reason why people are saying SWTOR has more story then every other game is because you are force fed the story. Also, given the fact that it's a SW IP, fans already have something to relate toy. Behind the force fed story using voice acting and other slick tricks, it's just the same boring ass questing as every other game. I all those "other" games force fed you the story like SWTOR does, no one would see the difference or even bring it up.
Except that the QUANTITY of the stories as well as the QUALITY is what people are talking about. Of course if other developers actually TRIED to give a decent story then you might be right, but since most developers barely seem to have passed their literature classes, I just can't agree with you.
Quality is irrelevent... that's up to the players taste. IMO they can force feed you story without being so aggressive, which is the best way. The way it's done now in SWTOR you have to stand around doing nothing but listening to a voice actor, make some decisions, and spacebar through it. They could easily make it more immersive by making the quest giver be more interactive, not some stationary person.
What comes to mind is this, and it may be similar to something seen in GW2 but different:
You run into an area and you're approched by an NPC, the NPC asks for your help and you're given a choice to accept. Once accepted, the NPC asks you to follow them to an area and while moving there they explain the situation. From there they can either help you or standby while you do the task. Once finished the NPC approaches you again and either rewards you or continues the quest line. It feels less of a chore this way and more realistic than going and talking to someone for 3 minutes only to find out they want you to kill 20 things that's 3 minutes away.
Would Dark Age of Camelot be considered a theme park game?
I dont understand why people want a storyline in an MMO. To me the fun of an online rpg, is making your own story. My first MMo was daoc, back in 2001. The things i remember most were the other people i played with, and the fun adventures we had together.
It is as though games have regressed in the last 10 years. They seem to be more like single player rpgs, like baldurs gate, than full open world online games like Daoc..
I remember when i was a kid playing atari 2600, playing games like indiana jones, or pitfall harry, and wishing i could explore more of the world, and do whatever i wanted. Finally i found a game like that when i found Daoc. In dark age i could wander around for hours, (there were no maps in game back then).
Now they make games with "zones" that are so sterile and limited. They have quests that just put you on a railway like path. There is not much sense of exploration because you can just look at a map which has a magical gps to tell you exactly where you are. Daoc technically had zones, but they were contiguous. You didnt go from being in the green grasslands to being in the desert just because you crossed some zone line.
Anyway, just reading all these comparisons between rift and swtor and Wow, and it just seems like more of the same unimaginative handholding gameplay bleh.
