I played the first Guild Wars and remember people calling that an MMO too. But it wasn't. So why is this even classified as an MMO and not a multiplayer RPG.....
Comments
Because it is.
^ the man speaks truth. It is definitely an MMO. The world architecture is completely different, and not hub based this time around.
So it will have an auction house? How about a mail system? Is it like Guild Wars where it's all instanced or is it open ended and I can walk past a bunch of people killing something and help them?
Yes, yes, open world.
Yes.
My theme song.
If you had the time to post here why didnt you just take a second to check out the site and you would know the answer to all your questions. You would even know it isnt instanced like the first. This isn't hidden information.
It would have taken fewer keystrokes to find the answer in google. But, as has been mentioned, is that the developers didn't make GW1 an MMO. They are making Guild Wars 2 an MMO. It's a different game.
Some people don't know where to look or how to look. It's perfectly common, don't get so offended by it.
Thanks guys. Especiallly for the website. That's awesome it's an MMO this time. You guys rock and are very helpful. So now I got two MMOs to play this year besides WoW. Thanks again!
It's perfectly natural to assume that because a game is a sequel that it's going to be more of the same. I kind of blame ArenaNet for this one.
Anyway, ok the guy didn't do any research before coming here. But let's all be that cool GW community that we know and love.
GW2 is an MMO. It's going to be awesome. Not only will you be able to walk past a group of people and help them, it's going to be easier and more rewarding than ever before. The Dynamic Events system they're introducing to replace quests is all about encouraging social play. Definitely read up on that or I'm sure we can recommend some links and videos if you'd like.

I agree. I feel like they should have just called the game something else. The name probably causes more confusion than it's worth. I think GW fans would be excited from ArenaNet's own name alone.

Yeah im still annoyed by World of Warcraft not being an RTS. What a waste.
I'm going to assume you're being sarcastic here and mocking me.
Calling this game "Guild Wars 2" is more like calling WoW "Warcraft 4". It's the number at the end that makes the difference.
Mega Man. Mega Man 2. Mega Man 3. They all were very similar. When they made Mega Man X, it was so different, they didn't call it "Mega Man 7" even though it's in the same universe. Mega Man Legends wasn't called "Mega Man 9" either.

When GW came out it was not clasified as MMO. They called it Online action rpg.
But with GW2 Anet set out to make true MMO.
Funny thing is that in years after GW1 launch. MMOs started to become smaller and smaller. And the standards were reduced.
And now by what passes for MMO these days (Vindictus for example) even GW1 is MMO
But worry not
GW2 will be more of MMO SWTOR is
I agree. When people see GW2, they're instantly reminded of GW1 and everything they disliked about it.
According to Martin Kerstein, they have not started to market the game yet. I agree, because presence on game shows alone is not really marketing and this explains why there's so much missinformation about this game to this day. All the info has been spreaded by fans alone and you know how things get twisted and turned during that process.
Don't be offended by people's ignorance just yet. Feel free to be, once they market their game and those questions keep coming.
I suggest to do just one ounce of research on the subject before you post, it would save you the hassel of looking foolish.
Everything you need to know about Elder Scrolls Online
Playing: GW2
Waiting on: TESO
Next Flop: Planetside 2
Best MMO of all time: Asheron's Call - The first company to recreate AC will be the next greatest MMO.
This might be a long-shot, but i'd go ahead and claim that this could have something to do with it:
"Will Guild Wars 2 be an MMO?"
"Yes. Guild Wars 2 provides a massive, online persistent world."

ArenaNet never called GW an MMO. It was the community's fault.
I know everybody has answered your question 'Is GW2 an MMO', but I thought I'd clarify some other points.
What they have is BETTER than an auction house. Not only can you look for items people are selling, but you can actually post you are looking for an item, and the price you're willing to pay, and anybody who sees that can sell that item to you even if you're not online!
... and the mail system actually has a carrier pigeon flying over to your character to deliver the mail.
... and not only can you help people who are killing things, but you still can get xp and loot from it without reducing the loot or xp they get. So being helpful is actually useful, rather than an annoyance to all parties concerned.
So yeah. It's actually doing a lot of new things, not just 'Oh, now it's a standard MMO'.
What I meant was that ArenaNet called this one "Guild Wars Two" and not "GW: Beyond" or "GW: The MMO" or "GW: Even if You Hated the First One Give This a Try"."
Someone else somewhere had the idea of just calling it "Tyria" or something so that GW fans would instantly know what it was but non-fans wouldn't.

Hey, it worked for Grand Theft Auto 3, right?
(Okay, okay, I admit other than GTA3, I can't think of another example where there's such a drastic shift in game type, off the top of my head. I know there's at least one other, but I can't think of it right now....)
This is an MMO but it is not an MMORPG.
It's an action MMO with RPG elements.
Now, that's an odd thing to say. Why would you say that? I'd like to disagree with you, but your statement is so vague and meaningless I don't know where to start.
You are probably rigth, but what MMO today would not qualify for such a description?
