Square pegs (WoW/EQ mmorpg formula) and round holes (Star Wars IP)?

Well guys, what did you expect when devs said that "anyone deviating from WoW design must be crazy?"

Here's your cake, now eat it.

    There are very few instances of end game gear looking how I would imagine it looking, all I have to say for some of the gear in  Tor is;

I don't understand, can you explain please?

As I mentioned most gear has mod slots on it.  The gear itself has no stats, the level and stats on gear is determined by the mods you put on it.  So put 3 level 50 purple mods on a lightsaber you got at level 10 and you get a level 50 purple lightsaber that looks like the level 10 one.

Honestly adding a apperance slot would have been much easier to implement but doing mods makes a much more flexible system so I htink it's a great add on.

The system wasn't done over the beta weekend but I read somewher they added over a 1000 new pieces of gear most with mod slots in Monday's build.

wrong, armor and damage on weapons depend from item, not from mods, mods at stats, you can have 150 armor robe with 0 stats and 3 mods slots, same for 100 dps saber with no stats and 3 mods slots, but that lvl 50 with purple mods it still be 100 dps saber and 150 armor robe

People keep going on and on about wanting a appearance tab, and time after time have had others explain ANY gear can be modded to be made your main gear.

You DON'T NEED A APPEARANCE TAB with this system. You don't need to wear a fake set of gear. Your gear can look like what you want, and it is actually what you are wearing.

Crafting + Mod freedom > appearance tab

  • Eir_SEir_S Member UncommonPosts: 4,440

They're ALL fake sets of gear.  You're not wearing the "real" gear under it, they're still virtual pants.  POINT: Look how you want to look.  The systems are the same thing.  Anything else is splitting hairs.

The consular has long been famed in beta for being the "silly hat" class. The sith inquisitor gets a funky neck-brace/collar thing at higher levels. The classes are pretty well distinguished by their looks, if you don't go the modding route.

Whether you like the look or not is another matter (the consular flinging gravel in a silly hat always felt a mite too Monty Python for me, but that's just my own taste).

Yes Star Wars can have pretty odd attire sometimes. However, none of the examples above are Jedi. The Jedi, in the more spiritual and materialistic aspect are based off of Buddhism. They aren't supposed to let emotion influence them. Because of this they are also minimalist and essentialist, they have no need for vanity and fashion which is why they wear plain and simple clothing and according to the expanded universe have done for many thousands of years.

Now you may mention all the bizzare equipment you can wear in KOTOR. That game was a special case, because you, Revan were a special case. He/She has their memory erased and replaced with new ones which means that they were under the impression they'd been a smuggler, soldier etc and then in KOTOR 2 you're the exile who gets completely cut off from the force and left to live out your days in solitude.

The Sith on the other hand can have all the crazy armour they want! They have greed, vanity, hate, selfishness the lot, so anything Emperor-esque is acceptable.

In conclusion though as far as armour sets go, Jedi should remain plain, and if they must give them something extreme then maybe decorate the robes rather than give them excessive shoulder pads or head pieces because to be honest its just unecessary and is on the line of breaking the lore.

Well I hope that you'll be able to mod completely and that the gear design is purely cosmetic/optional.

I still think it would have been much better if you'd progress your stats and what-have-yous through particular skills and talents. So instead of  "+10 acid resistance sholder pads" you get a "+10 acid resistance secret jedi technique" at the end of a dungeon. As a poster above mentioned, I don't recall Luke, Leia and Han raiding the Death Star to get a cool new blaster or knee pads... but Luke did sometimes discover/learn a new power or two during an adventure. This "skill or technique" or whatever collecting would work exactly the same as collecting gear but it would be much more in tune with what Star Wars is all about.

But no, "anyone deviating from WoW design must be crazy," so there you go - huge shoulder pads and all.

There were actually so many awesome looking armour sets in those 2 videos but of course you only focus on the questionable ones. That being said I agree the ones in the OP dont look so great, luckily the mod system means u'll never have to wear armour you dont like the look of just because its slightly more powerful.

    From your original post:

I don't like that either. But it's a FACT that this isn't "THE HORROR" (thread title) for everyone. What an incredibly boring world this would be if we all shared the same taste.

I totally agree with the OP. Especially the sith outfit is beyond ridiculous. When I think back about the first CGI trailers about SWTOR I remember that I thought the Sith looked intimidating in their outfits. The sith outfit that the OP showed however makes a Sith Inq look like a clown. The pointed hat! Seriously, no class that is supposed to look intimidating can make that hat and those shoulderflaps work lol.

EDIT : I understand that you dont have to wear it, because of the way modding works. But thats not the point. The point is that those outfits shouldnt even be in the game.

I'm not going to go on a rant about how ridiculous they look (because we all know Star Wars fashion has always been hit-and-miss anyway), but shame on Bioware for going with the huge shoulderpads. If they lost those, the gear would look infinitely better - and more Star Wars, in my opinion.

  • NazgolNazgol Member Posts: 864

You know what the horror is, acting suprised about some of these looks being in the game. if you watched the designing the darkside/lightside dev videos you would have seen them a long long time ago. As many people have mentioned, if you do not desire this look there is a mod system and also you can hide your helm if you don't like the headpiece.

    In Bioware we trust!

  • SupersoupsSupersoups Member Posts: 1,004

So nobody cared to watch the video and saw awesome looking sets. But ofcourse OP has to give an impression that all end game gear sucks in SWTOR. First, 'i cant' romance same sex so i am boycotting this game'..but he went back anyways and after beta wahhhh 'it is a single player game because my logic states so' and now this..... drama continues.

Pretty much this. There are heaps and heaps of appearances in this game. If you dont like the over the top endgame gear you can just take the mods out and put it in some low level plain robes that you like.

All the stats are stored in the item mods, not the item itself. So you could wear your starter gear all the way to end level if you so desire.

I doubt many players will like that Sith outfit. Its just unfitting for that class and background. There are more outfits in SWTOR that I dont like (the BH outfit that makes the BH look like a chaos marine), but I cant say about those that they dont work for those classes. This Sith outfit is just silly. Might as well add a pink tutu to it if you reason that anything goes and its just about personal taste. You might find players who like that too I guess.

It does look rather bad (in my opinion) however we saw this gears in the progression videos already and if i remember right it was for the Sage/Sorcere spec the armor for the shadow did look rather cool (again in my opinion).

The armor sets for the other classes did look rather promising as well (just judging by the progression videos) so it would seem that its really only one class/spec that will have funny looking armor (sort of looks like its ceremonial armor tho) and even saying that is prolly way to premature since you can craft armor reverse engeneer them and get new looks so i at least hope that there will be some decent looking armor pieces for the Sage who knows maybe crafting will finally be meaningfull and the coolest pieces of armor are crafted only O.o

Apparently you're not in the beta.

If you take a LvL 15 social light armor from Balmorra for example it has 12 armor and four mod slots. Now if you go and put in some blue LvL 20 mods the armor gets now 130 armor + all the other stats you added through the mods.

Same goes for weapons aswell. Take a LvL 10 blaster without stats and put LvL 20 mods inthere. Your DPS increases accordingly and is now on LvL 20 aswell.

Oh. And just for those not understanding StarWars and it's designs.... StarWars is a fairytale afterall and not some die hard SciFi-story.
