G-mail is an ongoing experiment still in beta. The entire reason why it's being done is:
There is a background program that reads through all email. Depending on what the email you are reading is about, the background program then decides what banner ads, pop up ads, pop under ads, will appear.
Yes all internet activity is monitored by the goverment. (Check out a NICE book called "Digital Fortress" by Dan Brown.) But the goverment does it without the public's official consent. They do it in secret. With G-Mail, each person who uses it is giving their consent, their OK, to have their email monitored and read. The goverment does not have to worrry about doing it in secret. Worry about looking bad, getting sued, etc...
G-mail is NICE.... for saving big files. For using it as long as you don't send, recieve, or save, any info you would not want anyone else to know about, including the goverment, wife, husband, kids, boss, employer, co-workers, etc....
G-mail is an experiment to see how much of the public would be willing to give consent to have their email read and checked. (Kind of simular to how some Europeans willingly volunteered to have chips implanted into them which monitor them, tracked them, and possibly mind controlled them.)
I dont see the big deal about Gmail. I have an account my friend gave me and ive never used it. My hotmail account works fine, i have never gotten any spam, and never get any mail from something I havent directly signed up for.

1. So far G-Mail (Google email) allows its users to store from 250 MB to 1 GB of memory. Unlike most other email providers, G-Mail allows its users to upload and store files too. So you can store games, MMORPGs, and other programs. It is like having your own personal online hard drive - for FREE.
(There are many online harddrive services, but they are no longer free. Like "Z Drive" for example.)
You can also share/send files to other friends using G Mail.
2. G-mail has been responsible for all other email providers suddently giving their users insane amounts of memory. Yahoo email for example went from 6 MB, to 25 MB, to 100 MB, to 250 MB, over the course of 1 year (last year 2004.) So even if one does not use G Mail, or rarely uses it (like me) it has indirectly done TONs of NICE stuff for everyone who uses email on the internet.
