Ive always wanted to find an MMO i could truly settle in that isn't the ol' W o' W, Lotro managed that for a couple of months.
However ive spent most of the MMO days searching for MMO's, eagerly awaiting news the announcement of a release date or insight into a games development, what innovations it will contain, what classes, you know how it is, most of us on here do it.
However this month, and the months that follow i think thats going to change.
I was skeptical about TOR, but now im convinced it will be thoroughly enjoyable. Will the interest last into the long term? Time will tell.
Hopefully by 2012 there will be Guild Wars 2, the pvp game ive been waiting for that is skill based rather than gear based. I actually think this could be the one that will remain enjoyable time and time again.
Next year is also the expected launch of ArcheAge the Korean Theme/Sand hybrid. Truthfully my knowledge on this game is limited, but what i have heard and the little i have seen has certainly grabbed my interest. Sandboxes give the freedom most games can't and im a true believer in having as much freedom as possible in online worlds.
Then there is the Secret World. This one is of little interest to me but its offering a unique setting and a skill based system, sounds great for those looking for a unique experience.
So im sure there are many of you who fans of only one of those titles and care very little or not at all for the others but it seems like in 2012 theres a diverse choice for a change, something for everyone. For me however, i can't seem to decide which one ill want to play (minus TSW) on a long term basis, i imagine ill try them all but if they are all likeable well then its going to be a tough decision!
Is anybody finding it difficult to decide?

but until the games actually launch, there no choice to made

I'll tell you december 2012.
GW2 is, without a doubt, the game that I am most interested in. I do want an additional game to play that has massive character customization and stellar graphics, because I'm pretty sure that GW2 won't be excessive in that aspect.
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.

I've never been impressed with MMOGs...they always turn out to be only a fraction as good as the developers say they will be. Although I haven't been following any of the current let-downs-in-the-making, I know in my heart that I'm not missing a thing!
As dismal as the outlook is in the MMOGing industry atm, I am comforted by the fact that investors are becoming more and more sophisticated and are turning their backs on inferior development studios...leaving them to die. Another ray of sunshine is the fact that as the world-wide economic collapse continues to escalate, and as game companies struggle to survive, new, and vastly supirior technologies will emerge and corporations will be forced to immediately employ them - instead of shelving them for future use, as they have in the past. In other words: Virtually Reality is now on the horizon!
But, to answer the Op's question: Nope...I'm not at all overwhelmed. Heh, my mood would have to improve considerably just for me to feel underwhelmed by the 2012 releases!
From my experience a new MMO just doesn't have the content the old ones do. That doesn't mean that the new ones are not better games, just means that they take a bit to catch up with expansions/content updates. So one hurdle is to leave yourself enough content that's new and fresh for long term play.
Honestly though the big thing for us is where our group ends up. Everyone wants to try them all and then decide. So far GW2 is the most anticipated - some of the group loves GW1, some of the group loved Aion character creator (GW2 uses the same creator modified to restrict weirdness), some love B2P, etc. I expect the core of the group will also be very interested in Archeage when it gets closer to release as the core of the group are die hard crafters/builders.
Personally, I'm thrilled with the fact that my MMO addiction is going to get fed real well over the next two years. It's much better to have lots of good choices than limited ok choices. I will be trying them all.
Yes iot is true there is a pile of nrew mmo games coming. I dont think its a problem though because really last year all we got
was Rift to play really ! Nobody should be feeling burn out right now, but by god after playing all the 2012 mmos, some people will be burned out to the max lol
Role on 2012 and all the great mmos to come

I am looking forward to ToR, GW2, Archeage and TSW. I already love ToR, but if the other 3 are good, I will be in trouble financially
Not at all I welcome it, especially with the new crop of non fantasy mmos like TSW which I am really looking forward to, especially because I know its storyline complexity will drive away the sheep and the kiddies (I am tired of playing mmos with them)
Then I get to play the second wave of chinese mmos like Age of Wulin and the Korean mmo Archage
And then not 2012 but off in the distance is War 40k, I think its a great time for new properties when it comes to mmos, the elf, dwarf, dragon mmo has been beaten to death so I welcome the change. Hopefully we will also get more "boutique" mmos as I like to call then by smaller studious- high polished niche games (Trion could have really gotten in on this market instead of following WoW).
Hopefully we will get to see some great AAA pve sandboxes soon, EQ Next? Perhaps....
*Prays for more high quality adults only mmos, ones that kids won't play.
Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!
I find it hard to be overwhelmed, when it's all just hot air, for now. When I have actual games to choose between, I might be.. but even then, they'll probably be months apart.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
Not overwhelmed at all. Looking forward to playing them all If you try to decide beforehand only one game that you're going to play, you're just hurting yourself as a gamer imo
I sit on a man's back, choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by all possible means - except by getting off his back.
Played WOW for 7 years and besides wow just fifa here and there, hopefully ill be playing SWTOR for another 7 years can´t wait
Glory to the Empire
Guild Wars 2 or bust for me.
Rose colored glasses work well for looking back but they can be used for looking forward too.
Still, I'm very much looking forward to Tera Online.
While I respect thier candid honesty, that candid honesty has lead me to think SW-TOR isn't for me.
GW2 won't be for me. I never played GW and I'm very sure they won't miss me in the slightest. Good luck to it just the same.
Archage and Secret World I will lopk at before I comment.
On a final note, DirectX 11 means 2012 is a prime year for expansions and graphics packs of current titles too, so there is really alot of potential for current games to hold thier base and come out swinging. I don't want to let the rose colored glasses trick me but optimism isn't a bad thing.
No problem for me, 9/10 MMO's fail to live up to their expectations, and in the end we'll be lucky if 2 titles are really worth playing by the end of 2012.

not really overwhelmed lol

Overwhelmed...no, not really.
Cautiously hopeful, in several cases.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
Not overwhelmed here. There are some titles that interest me and I will follow, ignoring hype along the way.
GW2 I was not too interested in, basing my thoughts on GW1. Upon further investigation, it does look interesting and quite different from GW1.
The Secret World looks interesting, too. I need to dig up more info on this game.
ArcheAge I have not delved into very much, yet.
SW:TOR I am still undecided about. I think I will end up giving it a try, though I'm in no hurry to do so.
Hopefully there is a game or 2 that will grab my attention in 2012 as nothing is really doing it for me now...

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.- FARGIN_WAR
-Played SWTOR and it is a let down, will not be buying.
-Guild Wars 2 just doesn't appeal to me, everyone saying it looks amazing but I just cannot get excited for it, the gameplay just looks unimpressive and the features do not excite me.
-The Secret World just looks really bad from all the gameplay I've seen and it is made from Funcom...
-Planetside 2 is the only MMO that I'm hyped for, though SOEs history puts me off big time.
I've just been burnt from MMOs so much over the past six or seven years after SWG got ruined and ever since, every MMO that has been launch has been crap. They all seem to build up the hype so much and then never deliver, most feel like WoW clones too which is disappointing. I just hope SOE have finally tuned a corner and Planetside 2 will blow us all away because there is nothing else on the horizon.
Excited? sure but certainly not overwhelmed. Like others have said, until I actually have somethign to play it is just sort of fluff.
Guild Wars 2 and Planetside 2 are the only things I'm keeping track of. All the other games leave me feeling underwhelmed. Knights of the Old Republic Online had my interest until I discovered it's just another gear grind centric game with far too many World of Warcraft mechanics built in. A person could argue that it's a substantially different game with far more features, and I'd agree with them, but it isn't different enough for me to shell out box price + monthly sub for the experience. I've been there, seen it before already.
Recently discovered that Hidden World is Box price + monthly sub + cash shop for game critical items + no open world PvP. It's a 3 faction game, but if you bump into players of the enemy faction in the same open world zone, you end up cooperating with each other. My interest was shot with this one.
Other games that look interesting are largely unknowns that are better off with them being launched and aging 3-4 months so player reviews can roll in for me to consider if they're worth my time / money for.
Guild Wars 2 will have polish, a lot of game, and box price only without a monthy sub. So I'll be there for that.
Planetside 2 will be free to play (described as borrowing League of Legends cash shop system as a base) and I really enjoyed the first one, so I'll be there for that.
I think once someone kicks out a GOOD sandbox that isn't fantasy based, I'll probably dive into that too. I'm feeling really done with Fantasy as a theme.
At the end of 2009, I wasn't thinking, 2010 is going to be a good year for gaming because Uncharted Waters Online will launch. I had no clue that it would launch in 2010. I had given up on the game ever getting translated into English.
At the end of 2010, I wasn't thinking, 2011 is going to be a good year for gaming because Spiral Knights will launch. I had never heard of Spiral Knights, until I decided to check on what Three Rings was up to several months after the game released.
2012 will likely offer Guild Wars 2, which will likely be pretty good. Will any other really good games launch in 2012? If so, they're not on my radar right now--but they might still be out there.
Nope.
Tor is not a mmorpg and Im not too sure that TSW is either.
TOR might be a morpg / corpg, but not a mmorpg. Bioware still can’t demonstrate a keystone massively-multiplayer element, of which world pvp is, aside from giving one the impression that it will have WoW’s Wintergrap 2.0.
100% of the game-play experienced and revealed, 2-weeks from launch, is either single-player rpg-esque or cooperative party play, which is heavily instanced shoe-box 10 vs 10 capture the flag and control points, in addition to 4-player PvE Flashpoints.
A well produced Single-Player / CORPG it will be, though for $15/month, might not last for a prolonged period of time.
Leaves me with Archage and GW2 as massively-multiplayer games. So, nope...nothing overwhelming here.
Am i having trouble deciding? Heck no.
After all this time of having to be interested in things -not- gaming related, any little freaking bit of gaming descisions i get to make will be savored! After dusting off my older titles for the past year, i am truly excited about ANYTHING new that comes in 2012 lol.
The Deep Web is sca-ry.
I'm not overwhelmed by 2012's MMORPGs. I'm actually underwhelmed. For the last several years by this genre, as a matter of fact.
