Howdy, Stranger!

It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!

Bland, Cookie Cutter with nothing new

Sure the Voices are great, but after only a few hours of playing people will discover the space bar bypasses them. Sure you get a companion, but so does everyone else, it's just an extension of you and not really anything new.

the story is nice, i'll give it that, but that's where it ends. the Graphics are not that great (unless they're holding off for release, which i doubt), every class is mirrored exactly on the other side, so if you play a Smuggler you've played an imperial Agent, with the exception of the wording of the story. the planets are lifeless, no moving grass, no flying insects, no animals just wandering around and the cities are dead, barely any NPC's in them or background chatter.

Space combat is a rail game, so unless you really enjoyed Asteroids as a kid, it'll be boring to you. PvP is umm...well, i'll let someone else explain how bad that is, my experience was only 3 mini-games reminiscent of the CoH/CoV system. then there's flashpoints, their version of group instances, when i first tested these these were Awesome! but then they started tweaking them and fiddling with them and reducing the lengths, and now they're just ok.

the Light Side/Dark Side point system sounded cool in the beginning, but it's now a useless addition, oh boy a few titles and some visual corruption if you're dark, at the higher levels you get some cool gear, but it's exactly the same gear weather your dark or light and just visually looks different.

I won't even mention how you can't change sides, so if you go dark Jedi, you can not move to  the empire. a Smugular is stuck with the Republic, while Bounty Hunters are stuck with the Empire. there really needed to be a third faction of Neutral. I could go on about the negatives of this game, but i think you get the picture.

all in all, the game is a Step back in MMO's, it's taken all the features of other games and reduced them to as simple a state as possible, there's nothing new, innovative or exciting about the game, except that it's Star Wars of the past (but unlike STO, they at least did stay true to the Universe)

In reality, if they took this game, rebundled it as KOTOR3 and sold it as a standalone it'd be far better, i'd hype this game s a 4, and that's just for the Name Recognition alone.

Oh and here we are less than 3 weeks from launch (dec 20th) and not a single advertisement for the game anywhere. you'd think for an Xmas launch you'd see something on TV!

Gee, I bet they could have sold more that the 900,000 pre-orders that they have already sold if they advertised.

Sorry OP, but with 2 million people already tried the beta, your review is kind of.. anti-climatic at this point and just like your title..... "Bland, cookie cutter with nothing new".

Star Wars: The Old Republic beta test attracts 2 million players

Looks like a last gasp but nice try though.

Lol, biggest launch in history and he is griping about advertising.. rest of your points are opinions only. It was also well known for about 5 years now it was a cookie cutter MMO.

He waited four years to drop three bad posts on SWTOR. Now THAT'S some pre-planning!

Just pointing out MY opinion of what I saw of the game, and i wasn't alone in that opinion. about 40-45% of the people in the beta were registering the same seniments as what i posted, and that was the vocal ones. as you know some don't post on the forums for the game, due to the elistists rolling over them. so I really don't care that they invited 2 mill for the beta, or that they conned 900k to buy pre-orders for a chance to play in the beta. the game is what it is, and nothing can change that now.

So I all i can do is help some people realize it's not going to be anything great, so don't  go in with high expectations.

Preordering has nothing to do with beta access and never did; you're thinking of head-start.

They never said that.. pre order was for early access.. not beta.

The space combat in SWTOR is nothing like asteroids either... ha..have you ever played asteroids?

Light and darkside choices also change what your quest objectives are and what rewards you get from those objectives.  You do not get the same quest rewards.. sometimes by doing something lightside you can get double rewards (they have a quest like this on korriban)  sometimes doing something darkside will get you extra loot (theres a quest like this on tython)... etc.

I think he's going to be very upset when right before Xmas, he sees all these Star Wars commercials on prime time.

It'll be kind of like the Jedi sitting on Coruscant, all chillin' and such and then one day....

90% of all statistics are made up.

just like you saying people were conned into preordering so they would have a chance of getting into beta.

Nothing you have said is worth the time it took to read it really.

A creative person is motivated by the desire to achieve, not the desire to beat others.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.  If this game had any other name attached to it, then it would be going down in flames like the hindenberg on all the review sites.  If it was called Space Wars and they replaced the Jedi and Sith with sword wielding space monks that have psionic powers, then this game wouldn't be anything special at all.  In fact, it would be getting laughed at.

This game is riding on the Star Wars name alone.  If we remove that, then it's really nothing more than Vanilla WoW being rereleased almost a decade after the original.  The only innovation being that the dialogue is read to us instead of having to read it ourselves.

At some point everyone, except for the most die hard fanboy's, are going to realize this.  What they do with it after that is anyone's guess.  My choice, after I came to this realization, was to go ahead and play it for the story and bail as soon as it turns into a monthly gear grind.  (Especially after I saw how ridiculously ugly and WoW'ified the end game raid gear looks! I sure as shit aint spending hours trying to piece together something with shoulder pads bigger than a Rancor. lol)

So basically according to the OP: There is nothing new in this game, except for the stuff that is new.

{mod edit}. what i said is my Opinion, yes, but it is also the combilation of many peoples opinions as well, i'm not saying the game won't be a success (the name alone garruntee's that), i'm just saying it's not anything great or new compared to what's out there.

    Stop hating, start appreciating.

We all know SWTOR doesn't stray far from the cookie cutter mold but despite that they are adding plenty of novelty and immersion to the table and a shitload of landmass and content.

    Ima luvin' it.

So much of th9is post is based simply on what you feel about the game that I'd think one would be wrong to patently dimiss what you've said but as a few others have pointed out your thread falls in much the same category of the game itself.

With the nature of the world around us we all know that everyone isn't going to like everything but what exactly is your post adding to the critics that have already posted much the same opinion as you have?

You aren't going to like this game heck there may be upwards of a few million people who will play it and don't like it but they will be far outnumbered by the people who do enjoy the game.

Hope you do find a game out there you enjoy and don't resort to the usual trolling by haters out there.

Odd...I pre-ordered for Early Access (of course, since I was already in the beta it really wouldn't have mattered)

But you really should get your 'facts' straight before posting.

Finally, is there a particular reason you felt you absolutely HAD to have your own topic when there's 50 other <insert reason why *I* don't like TOR here> topics lying around?  You're really not as important as you seem to think you are!

I wonder this too, not specifically about Falin, but about a lot of the accounts that dislike SWToR. Why are they all Novice accounts? I've been on these forums for years, and I don't think I've seen so many Novice accounts*.

    * Novice accounts aren't bad, it just seems odd that there are suddenly so many, and that they seem to have such a poor opinion of SWToR.

hmmm an innovative crafting system, best storylines I have ever seen in a MMO, and the fantastic companion system seems to have escaped the OP's notice. BTW I canceled my preorder so lets not bring out the fanboy remarks. But I do give the game credit for the things it has done really well

    I miss DAoC

I gave you a bit of room in my last reply but have to agree with this poster here it's kind of crazy that people feel like making up numbers somehow strengthens whatever argument they are making.

About forty to forty five percent of what population of people? Are we supposed to believe that you actually sat down during beta to factually compile the information used to put those numbers out there?

Maybe you did which might also account for some of your factual errors like the one about people being promised beta time for pre ordering.

At any rate a bit off topic but what is it about forum goers that they find it such a great use of energy/time to post about products they are less than enthused about?
