After playing SWTOR... why would anyone play wow?

I am not trying to cut wow... I played wow for 4 years and enjoyed it. Wow obviously had alot of good things going for it or else why would so many people play it. But after playing SWTOR I can honestly say that in every way it is better than wow. But the reaon for this thread is not just to talk about how TOR is better, but to bring up a point:

SWTOR at its core of gameplay is very similar to wow... Everyone seems to agree that there is little to no trouble transitioning as all the controls are the same etc, etc. But TOR also has Full Voice over and an amazing storyline for each class. Not to mention that TOR's graphics are so much cleaner it's ridiculous! There is no question that if you say this game is jus like wow, you at least have to say it is just like wow, but new and improved in every way.

So, why would someone continue to play wow? TOR is obviously better. There isn't anything wow is offering that TOR isn't....well except elves and bad graphics. Well and lots of quest text to read. and panda's ....lol!

Probably becaus some people don't like the art designg or the voice overs or the story.

The things that you are touting as virtues are also things that others have decried.

Personally SWToR is more my speed for a themepark game (never got into wow) but I can easily see why others wouldn't want to play it.

I would have to guess that the only reason anyone would stick around in WoW after SWTOR releases is for one of three reasons:

    1. They've already invested so much time into WoW and have established relationships in that game that there really isn't an incentive to switch to SWTOR.

    2. They've never heard of SWTOR.

    3. They don't like space themed games.

Unfortunately most of those people say those things without ever trying it. And also unfortunately wow and other mmo's have created a playerbase of people that are like drones only trying to get to level cap... because in other mmo's levelcap is all that matters... so of course they don't think they would like it.

I can't think of any reason to play world of badgegrind.

You know if you dig around in the Rift fourms you can find a thread exactly like this one.  How did that turn out for me ?  not so good huh.

Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...

Wow has more content, i guess that could be a draw.

And for the casuals, you can do 5 mans, and now raids by clicking a button and getting put in a group now, SWTOR doesn't offer that.

Other than that, i get your point.

    4. The pvp is actually better, sadly.

    5. There isn't any space in TOR either.

    6. Better PVE encounters for raiders.

    7. The world doesn't feel totally dead and the npcs actually move around.

    8. There are a few weapons that could pass for a lightsaber.

    9. You can customize your appearance more than you can in TOR.

    10. There are more races to play.

Theres is few reasons you may have missed.

Personall, I think that SWTOR's problem is going to be not that it is like WoW but it is not like WoW enough.

WoW doesn't have one story that your character has to follow.

WoW has multiple zones that you can explore at any time.

WoW's PVP options are complex and rich.

WoW doesn't block your progress every five minutes with mind-numbling cliche'd dialogue.

WoW has genuine and diverse end game options.

WoW's social options are real and fun...

    ... etc etc.

Oh, and many people, I speculate, are going to find cutesie jawas with rocket launchers just as sickly sweet as panda monks.

No, WoW has nothing to fear from SWTOR.

    LOL!

    1. TOR has way more and larger zones to explore than wow.... at any time.

    2. TOR has an individual story for each class that you get to decide how it goes through your choices.... in wow there basically is no story unless you want to READ about killing rats to save the planet...lol.

    3. In TOR you can click past the dialogue if you wish, but why would you....it's amazing.... at least if your not a drone.

    4. TOR has an incredible endgame indeed.

    5. TOR is set up with the social aspect in mind and will start out with several million people to get it going.

    6. My cute jawa companion is just that.... a companion. But in wow you actually will be the kung fu Po panda.....lol.

    7. Wow is already afraid!

If you honestly think a gear grind won't exist in SWTOR, then you are sadly mistaken.

There's more free roaming in Wow.   Areas are big and you can fly very high just about anywhere that isn't in a building/cave.

There's a lot more content in Wow, along with more guides/walkthroughs, better (find)grouping mechanics, and more coddling by some guilds.

Pvp is arguably better in Wow.

Wow has draenei chicks and night elf chicks that can dance (holodancers are very meh).

    Wow has better "textures" (IMO).

Wow has fewer bugs and fewer gotchas.

Starting over, relearning everything and establishing characters/loot foundations takes a long time (usually).  If someone has been playing Wow and has a solid setup, why should they drop everything for something that isn't very different just because some things work/look a little better (and many don't)?

I'm going to try SWTOR for at least a few months (probably) over Wow because SWTOR has light sabres, rocket launchers and I'm tired of Wow's style - basically in that order.

    I've played wow for....i dunno...6 years?  Have 9 level 85s...

I've beta tested TOR and Preordered my 80 dollar digital edition...

TOR isn't obviously better. I have hopes it will GET better but it is not obviously better in its current state.

After the free month is up..ask yourself why would anyone play wow.....and hopefully the answer "I wouldn''t".

I wouldn't have played wow anyway.

Hell, I didn't even care for Warcraft...I preferred Command and Conquer.

Because SWTOR is WoW without 8 years worth of extra content?  I'm not saying that SWTOR is a bad themepark MMO, but honestly there's a heck of a lot more to do in WoW... by leaps and bounds.

LoL, WoW have almost 7 years in the market, with how many expansions?. Swtor is not even out, and still is an amazing game, can you imagine swtor with few Updates and expansion?, guess not, but dont worry u will have the kunfu panda/ pokemon expansion soon enough.

back to topic, after the last beta, i just cant play any other MMO in the market anymore.

I hate to say this....but look at the direction wow is headed... panda's! I think it is safe to say they are not planning on fixing anything.

I wasn't playing WoW before SWToR was on the horizon, so it's no surprise I wouldn't play it after playing SWToR in beta. It did highlight just how much of a gap exists between the games though.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

LOL. You know I actually was contemplating going back and playing wow and also having a subscript with TOR. One fantasy and one sci-fi but when I read and seen the new expansion coming out I just forget it. Between the stupid motorcycle mount and Kung Fu Panda the only thing Blizzard is missing at this point is Jack Blacks voice over yelling Skaaa Doosch. Guess I will just have Rift as my Fantasy game until a new worth while fantasy game comes out.

    For the bit in green..

That is entirely a matter of personal preference, in any MMO. End game is only "all that matters" to those who place that level of importance on it.

There are plenty of people for whom End Game is merel another aspect of the game along with every other. There are people who couldn't care less about End Game and much prefer all the content prior to that. I fall more into this group as I would be perfectly happy if I never reached End Game, so long as I was enjoying everything else I did. I've joined many guilds filled with players who felt the same way.

The whole "The end game is all that matters" mantra tends to be more an argument or justification used to get more dev attention on end-game, or to explain why people want to power-level to level cap, or want to get rid of leveling all together, etc. They only care about the end-game/raiding aspect, so as far as they're concerned, that's the only part that should exist.

Also, those in the "End Game Is All That Matters" crowd tend to be the "loudest" with their complaints and demands.

"All that matters" in any MMO is what a given individual enjoys and prefers doing.

Ho ho. No it doesn't not by a long, long shot. SWTOR is tiny.

    2. TOR has an individual story for each class that you get to decide how it goes through your choices.... in wow there basically is no story unless you want to READ about killing rats to save the planet...lol.

Exactly. ONE story you HAVE to do. And millions of other people have exactly tghe same one. And there are plenty of excellent stories in WoW. It helps of course if you can read but many of the later stories are now animated and voiced.

    3. In TOR you can click past the dialogue if you wish, but why would you....it's amazing.... at least if your not a drone.

The dialogue is not amazing at all. It's incredibly bad TVM dialogue. Really, clunky and embarrassing. The NPC animations while they're saying it make it even more risible.

    4. TOR has an incredible endgame indeed.

    LOL. Oh dear oh dear.

    5. TOR is set up with the social aspect in mind and will start out with several million people to get it going.

I sure am looking forward to playing Pazaak in those cantinas or maybe dancing in a band or just cooking some nice food or maybe even sitting down in a chair... Oh wait. You can't do any of those things.

    6. My cute jawa companion is just that.... a companion. But in wow you actually will be the kung fu Po panda.....lol

Exactly. In SWTOR you can be one type of differently coloured-human. In WoW you can be a werewolf, a zombie, a minotaur, a gnome...

    7. Wow is already afraid!

Yes. Afraid you might self-harm when you realise exactly what you've got after five years of mad hopes and dreams.

Cool. You just proved that you know nothing about SWTOR, and are just regurgitating the same swill that you've heard other misinformists spew. Conflatulations.

Wow is terrible. I honestly believe elitist jerks and arena junkies were the final "crushing blows" to wow. In all honesty. Think about it for a while and you'll see what I mean.

((Either stopwatch raids or cookie cutter arenas...take your poison.))

I had a lot of fun in SWTOR. A whole lot of fun. It really suprised me. I am anxious for GW2 but depending on how early access and my first month of SWTOR goes, I may just stay w/ the game.
