This isn't the worst open beta ever, I do remember the Ultima Online open beta crashing like every 10 minutes for like the first week. So in that regard this isn't the worst open beta I've ever played. However I must say this is the worst open beta game I have ever played. I've played some pretty lame games in my day (Underlight, and Neocron) to name a few and this one takes the cake. Well maybe it ties with Underlight, but in all fairnesss to that game I did play it in Alpha. There is just simply nothing to do. I don't wanna hear that free-form RPG nonsense that the people who made this game are spewing either, because this game is devoid of RP. If you are looking for some Free-Form RPG action go join a MUSH and save yourself the d/l time.
Well. Not 100 % correct. Atm you drop everything except Weapons and Implants.
Yeah I was going to come back and correct what I had said so that I wouldn't be "that guy" lying about some game function so peopel would not play the game.
Losing anything when you die sucks... Losing items that you spent money on sucks.. If this is the case why would anyone wear armor just to lose it if they die? Its just discourages me from playing.
Neocron at least made you lose whatever was in your first quickslot and a chance to lose somethign in your inventory. And when that happened the "looter" had to hack the belt to get it. Thats giving the player a chance to at least get his crap back.
Yeah I know this is not the finished game.. I have only played so far a few hours and I am going to give the game a chance.. All I have to do is figure out how to delete my charactar and start over.. Or Can I in Beta?

I played in the closed beta a few months ago, and i must say, it did not live up to my hype. I was extremely excited about the prospect of this game. But after playing, i knew instantly it would be full of griefers and people attempting to ruin a potentailly good game. Awesome idea, but initiated poorly. (BTW, when I played, the wolrd was virtually EMPTY... I cant imagine it being full.)
I played open-beta for approximately 4 hours before uninstall. Really poor graphics i thought. Overall very boring and uninspired. Perhaps an ingame tutorial will be implemented before release. Would give a better understanding of gameplay dynamics. However I wouldnt say it was worst open-beta. RYL: POTE wins that distinction.

I made it about 2 days of sparse play, had to take it off. It just wasn't appealing to me and it didn't seem ready for open beta to me. It also seems like a game that probably won't make it and if they do, they will just tread water.
Don't get me wrong, I am not flat out saying its a horrible game, I mean anything with that much development time has to have potential, it just didnt' scream at me or get my attention and I just don't feel its gonna be a winner.

I think one of the big conceptual problems they've had with the game so far is the lack of any RPing going on in the game. On the website the game is touted as being a very roleplay-centric venture, where the players run pretty much all aspects of it.
Sadly, it appears to have turned into World of Counterstrike. Don't get me wrong--this game has some great ideas and vision behind it's design; I just think the developers misjudged how many pure griefers were going to jump aboard.
It also doesn't really help that you're left absolutely clueless at the onset of the game--wondering what the heck to do
Worst open beta is perhaps a bit extreme but i was left wondering what the closed beta people actually did. So many things that could - and should - have been fixed before it opened were left in, and the whole thing just feels...lacking in someway. I know there's much more due to be added but i can't help feeling that i'm going to be disappointed after quite a while following the progress of FoMk. Still, fingers crossed eh?
Not the worst open Beta, but possibly poor design decisions overall will lead to the quick failure of this game.
Seemed to function fairly well, it wasn't like I couldn't do anything. it's just that I didn't want to.
FYI folks, beta testers are at-will testers and can quit at any time, for those of you who were confused that we are somehow being paid. If we don't enjoy it enough to test it, it's our repsonsibility only to never log in again and leave room for someone who does.
Now back to the "game".
The mechanics all felt fake. Pasted on. Everything's a terminal. Harvesting, healing, market, quite frankly I expected combat to take place in terminals as well by the time I got to it. Walk up to terminal, type in players name, push Kill button, bam, combat over. Ok that's pretty much the only part of the game that isn't a terminal, but you get my drift.
That contrived feeling took the soul of teh game out for me, and gave me no compelling reason to want to continue. I went to several different areas hoping to explore. Ostensibly they all looked about the same, constructed the same as well. I finally found an outdoor area on Mars and promptly fell through the world. Exit, Uninstall, delete folder, done.
Three year old graphics don't help either.

I played the beta for less than 2 hours before de-install. Dear God, how badly they killed the beta. The interface is clumsy, the tutorial is crap, its a PvP fest, you dont know how the hell to make any money, or to even level up or buy crap. They turned the whole concept of the game into complete shit.
I think it's the objective of your past self to make you cringe.

I've been playing this game since early feb. First in the LED, then in the FDC and the gamechrashes has been mostly removed. And there is a new interface on the way to the game. If you check the homepage or a gametrailer site, you can see a teaser of the new one

i tryed that game.....itz probably a good game once u start playing it...but itz so damn hard to start...i started and didnt no what the hell 2 do...i quit it within 10 minz
Yeah, this game really does suck, i didnt really believe people when they said it, but it really sucks. When you start the game, you know nothing , the controls are confusiong, and impossible if you dont already know what you are doing. I found myself wandering around some huge complex, not knowing how to get the npcs, who clearly wanted to talk, because they show a bubble with their names when they can talk, i think, to talk. Interface...has anyone figured it out, i mean how to click on things, like your bars, or anything, people, those computer things...? The graphics are also pretty bad, i mean you could live with them, but they need to be improved ALOT, and the camera is really bad, at least for me, i found myself getting sick, really sick, so i just uninstalled it, plain and simple i never will play again, and ive never had problems with any other mmog.
1st: You can talk to the npc, have you actully tried and go up to them and say hello?
2nd: The npc are at the moment just there to increase the poplulation a bit since everything is controlled by the players, from police to the army (police-bot will arrive to help us though)
3rd:If you want to see players, talk in faction chat or do some missions, or head for Brooklyn since there is always something there, but don't complain if you get shot because the police (also player-run) is doing their best.
4th: Just scoll on the mouse or on the keyboard and you will get a 3rd person view if you don't like the current one.
5th: The controls are actully terrible (have to admit that), but just go into option and redo them so that they are more fitting to your style.
6th: Don't give it a grade after a few minutes or a day, there is more to the game and it is a open beta, not a free game, if there is something you don't like put it into the forums and if it is a good suggestion, the admins will probably take it into consideration.
I thought they redid the interface cause it was terrible to start with?

It was, but the new one still got some babybugs that aren't removed yet. Also one of the main reasons this is an beta, because they want public opinions on how it feels, how efficient it is and so on.

I have to agree with the original poster's title at least. Admittedly, I haven't betaed this game since around the end of February, so if they've made massive improvements during March-April, then I retract my statement. I have beta tested many mmo games, and this one is by far the least ready for prime time I have ever seen. I hope the devs rethink the 4-30-05 release date, or it's gonna be a cold reception for them. I spent the better part of a month faithfully doing the best I could to send in bug reports. Yes, beta is not supposed to be so much about fun, as improving the product. However, FoM has SOOOO many problems, it could barely(in Feb. at least) be called alpha, let alone beta. My main gripe was all of the pk kiddies running around sniping the crap out of everyone. Rather hard to test anything when everytime you stand still for more than 2 seconds, some d00d attacks you. I feel they should have a seperate server for uninterrupted testing use.
Now, for the actual bad parts. Massive typos(ok, yes, it is made by a German dev group), severe lockups, no fun to the game play at all that I could see, missions are only able to be made by higher level players, how do you get to be a higher level player? Running same mentioned missions. Anybody else see a problem with that scenario? They need to add a lot of experience raising content aside from player made missions. If for no other reason, how about the poor schmucks that are in an obscure time zone, and they find themselves constantly logging in to empty servers? Anyway, like I said before, if they have improved these aspects since late Feb., great. But I don't see how it would be possible for them to take the game that far in 2 months. I am definately a fan of these types of games, enjoyed Neocron, but I would certainly wait at least 4-5 months before paying real money for this one.
What deaper is there to go, the npc are programmed to respond.
Example:
Npc staning near a corner
I go up to him and say Hello mr npc or mr Smith (if that was his name)
The npc will then go on and say hello to you and you can say things and they will respond. Just dont expect to much out of it, it's pre-programmed, not made in that second.
The first building is your apartment that you live in, they don't make you live on the streets and if you got the money, get yourself a nice looking penthouse
And to do missions just search for a mission, they are not on 24/7 since they have to be made by senior members and can range from patrol to assault.
And the camera, it's not a fps and it's not WoW, but it's FoM camera, takes time to get used to, but you can adapt to it.
And open beta can mean anything, if you read their plans on the forums they are first taking care of system bugs(believe me, they were the worst ever and high five for Duplex for getting rid of them)
Then gameplay and additions and a****s are on the way... Besides still got a way to go but that is why you are a part of the beta. I'ts not a free game, but a gameclient that you will insure that it will be palayable and enjoyable when it finally comes out.
