Any one else notice that SWTOR has an abnormally large number of server maintenance cycles? Seems like it's every other night. I also find it weird that it's often at midnight. A lot of MMO players are just getting started at midnight. Isn't every other MMO something like 4am?
Do you think this is a temporary thing? I certainly hope so.
Launches always have alot of these at first. They are taking care of issues that are causing players problems. Yes, of course it's temporary. You really have to ask that?
I do. Because they have been doing this for several weeks now. Before it was just their website. Now it is both.
I am a web engineer, and it's pretty much taboo to ever take a website down. They do it every few days, so it is a fair question to ask.
If you were a "Web Engineer" you would already know the answer to that very question.
Well I am a "web Engineer" (you tool), and I have no clear explanation.
edit: If you're going to be condescending, you deserve to be treated like an ass.
Oh and I'm not nerd raging or anything. I'm really just curious. I do this kind of thing all the time, and I just don't understand why they have to keep pulling all their servers down for hours or days on end.
And yes, doing forum maintenance at the same time is a bit questionable. Are they using the same machines?
The forums do not always go down. The last downtime they did not. They do however show down when their queue system cannot handle the load as their forums get over loaded during downtimes.
The forums did go down the last planned big maintenance as well, just not for the entire duration. Probably going to be the same today.
In this case, the forums should also need to come down, because the access to those forums will no longer be granted to anyone who hasn't yet entered a retail game key.

A very good point I didn't think about and since I am not a programmer I have no idea how much work is involved in that.

I can think of two reasons, one: they don't want a sea of where's the game posts, two: it's billing related.

But if I cant enter my subscription information because the forum and account settings are unavailable how can I avoid being locked out of tyhe game?
I redeemed the code on the 16th when I recieved it - and I did not think about entering any aditional bank information because I was busy playing and thought to myself the first 30 days were free as soon as I payed for the actual game.
I know I am wrong and that the sub information must be entered before the 30 days are "released" but I dont see how taking down the account pages helps us set up subscription cycles either

As long as they're actually patching the game this time it's good to see the down time and I have no problem putting up with it at any time of the day. But if they are bringing it down for 4 hours for the same reasons they brought it down for 5 hours pre-release only for me to start the game up without downloading so much as one mb of a patch, I will be sorely disappointed with them. If they had let the EGA people on before the midnight launch there servers that were already full wouldn't have been loaded up with even more new people and the empty new servers they put up may have drawn some people in. It also seems a bit strange that they tell you in game to check the forums for details as they're bringing the servers down, then they bring the forums down as well. Just seems like it could be handled better.

That's the main reason I came here to gripe. They told me to check their forums for info about the maintenance, and then the forums are down too!

You should probably reevaluate your definition of Tool and Possibly Web Engineer.

You know, I have never blocked someone on any forum until right now
they accounced 3 maint periods over a week ago now, if you read the main swtor page or launcher at all, yould know this.
This ..
It was announced weeks in advance and it is a scheduled maintenance.
/end thread.
How many servers SWTOR will launch with on release?
ShredderSE - Umm how many do they need? Maybe 6. US, EU, Asian, France, German and Russian. Subs will be so low there is no need for more Snoocky-How many servers? The first 3 months a lot...after that 2 i guess, one for PVE and 1 for PVP...
Thorbrand - SWTOR doesn't have longevity at all. Might be one of the shortest lived MMOs.

Edit:
The point of this thread is not that it is weird they are having server maintenance in the first week. It's weird they have such long maintenance periods. Their whole website was down for a few days just a couple weeks ago. Now they have to go down for several hours at a time. I find it weird.
I have never encountered another game or website that does this
Fixing stuff = good.
But yes, it must be temporary, this is a cost and doing so in the long run is a huge waste of money.
I know the announcement for this downtime was given well in advance but I'm curious, was there any in-game warning just prior to the servers going down? I didn't notice one but then again I wasn't really paying much attention to my chat box either. Only thing I recall was coming out of one of my main mission zones and BAMN, servers down. So again, did anyone notice any sort of in-game notice for the servers going down just prior?

Yep 30, 15, 10, 5 , 4 , 3, 2, 1 were the warnings.

I also read a developer post on your issue shortly before the forums went down.
The website and forums will be back up and when they are posting or replying to any posts wont be possible. The forums will be set to a "read only" status for a few hours. The reason for this is because they expect a very large crowd of people on the website updating their information. So you wont have any trouble getting back into game. I was fortunate enough to update mine at like 215am and it only took maybe as long as it took to type in my CC info. It was so easy infact.. i upgraded to the deluxe version for that cool looking mount.. not sure what its called.
Anyway, dont worry. you will be back ingame without any problems. See ya ingame! this game is so, so sweet.

Yeah...it wouldn't be so bad if I could log into their forums and do some research, but they take the forums down too

People need to learn to read...
The only issue I have with maintenance is why the home site comes down too. Infrastsructure wise, it makes absolutely no sense.
