I knew it wouldnt be a great game since its based off Star Wars and such but is the gameplay and PvP really as bad as people make it out to be?
The trolls who spend all their time unfairly bashing the game are bad, not the game. The game is great! I've been having a blast. Try it for youself and stop listening to people who have probably never even tried the game.
This!
I am not seeing where it is a bad game. It is the highest quality I have seen in an MMO at launch, especially considering what a crap launch games like WOW had.
They announced in 2009 that they were not going to reinvent the wheel... and mature people got over it... in 2009!
there is a difference between reinventing the wheel, improving on it or just copying it. Basically this game just copied it, now a lot of people I have seen post here do not find this a bad game at all.. its a lot of fun actually its just not even close to as polished as many people think unless your are new to MMOs. If you are talking just the MMO aspects I'd say Rift was a much more polished release than this one but overall I'd say SWTOR is a better game but lacking in many of the MMO aspects
The vast majority of players and reviewers who have tried the game seem to really enjoy it. Don't listen to the haters. SWTOR is an extremely well-made and enjoyable game. You owe it to yourself to give it a try.
Also, a general point of advice: Don't ever listen to the people on this site's forums for an accurate review of a game. This site is filled with MMO-burnouts and butthurt sandbox gamers who cannot enjoy anything that does not meet their perfect expectation of what an MMO can be. I'm not surprised that people here on MMORPG.com are bashing SWTOR... they bash every game.

Why do you need to check the scoreboard during the game? The scoreboard tells you nothing about the obejctives in the game. Or do you just need to reconfirm how well you are doing each time you are killed? Just asking

Also what is and isn't innovative and improving is very suggestive, personally I find VO and Story to be the best thing to happen to the genre since WoW.
i honestly can't play FPS games for more than an hour two now nowadays because every single one is pretty much the same thing over and over.. now as far as the VO and story thats subjective.. it does have the nice new feeling much like Rifts soul system and be able to change roles on the fly but after that new feeling wears off i'd rather have other aspects of the gameplay improved upon like the combat, like what is actually going on in the quests instead of the basic go here touch the glowing thing and watch story, actually having political structures in place for meaningful end game. Stuff like this that would actually bring more to the genre then just adding some flair on top of an already tired game structure.

in rift it allowed you to make strategic moves with your team.. look on the board and locate there best healer or there best damage dealer and coordinate with your team to eliminate those people to help your team.. thats really the only reason I ever looked at it during play but it helped a lot

Because when I die, and I'm waiting for the barrier to come down, I like to see how I'm doing, or how the guy that killed me is doing, or what the K/D ratio between the teams looks like.
I just like to look at it. It gives me a snapshot of how everyone is doing. It's fun to look at instead of just staring at your character on auto-run while you wait for the barrier to come down.
It also can give you an idea of who to target. If one player has a massive amount of healing, then maybe you should go after them.
It's really just one of those things that I didn't realize how much I missed until it wasn't there.

I'm actually a fan of sandbox games myself. Fortunately I have the ability to enjoy other types of games as well based on their own merits. I don't constantly hope that every themepark game that comes out is going to be sandbox. My point is that there are a lot of people on this site who DO hope this. And they relentlessly bash anything that isn't SWG2. It just gets old.
This is not somewhere to go for fair reviews of non-sandbox MMOs. Unless they are by the MMORPG staff that is... they tend to be more or less fair on their reviews.

You can only do so much to combat, Look at AA and GW2 they still use the same basic hit 1,2,3 to cast spells (At least I know GW2 does not so sure about AA) How long until that combat gets stale too?
And once again you margininalize the Story and VO, honestly take away the VO Story from say, Skyrim, and tell me if you can still play it. You may be able too (I know I wasn't able to play Morrowind because of it.) but VO and Story means more to me then any dodge button could.
I knew it wouldnt be a great game since its based off Star Wars and such but is the gameplay and PvP really as bad as people make it out to be?
For me the game is bad as its just another themepark game bringing nothing really new to the table, yes it has its little gimmik, the interactive storyline and its not bad.. but its just your average game at the end and does not deserve any of the hype.
Now saying that, if you like this type of theme park game and you like start wars then im pretty sure you will enjoy playing this..
Why do you need to check the scoreboard during the game? The scoreboard tells you nothing about the obejctives in the game. Or do you just need to reconfirm how well you are doing each time you are killed? Just asking
Son, this ain't Quake3Arena, this is a team oriented game.
Why you -wouldn't- want any feedback in a team-based game about your performance, I don't know.

Regarding combat, it's not so simple...
Yes, GW2 still has an action bar with numeric hotkeys. But think about everything that can be done with that medium. You can tab-targeted spells, ground targeted spells, aimed spells, melee, spells that create beneficial or harmful persistent AoE, crowd control, stealth, pets, heals, supply drops, teleports...the list goes on.
I think the point is that SWTOR's combat "feels" similar to WoW just because the abilities, by and large, are relatively similar. There are SOME that are different, for example the BH abilities feel pretty fresh and unique. But others are very similar like most of the Warrior/Knight stuff.
Whether GW2's combat manages to feel different from WoW has yet to be seen. But judging from the videos and the abilities hinted at within, I think it will be.
I think it comes down to whether or not your burnt out on what MMo's are and not what most of the haters are looking for. If you like MMo's then this one is very good and the story voice overs will grab you, if your burnt out, then pass it by.
It's a BioWare game with a subscription. If you're into BW games and their story, then you can expect to enjoy a good story. If you're into Star Wars and you like Episodes I, II and III better than Episodes IV, V and VI you might like this game enough simply for that. If you've played a lot of MMO's and you want something different beyond the story, then this title may disappoint you.
It's not a bad game, but do keep in mind that it plays like a single player game most of the time. The MMO-part is there to make you believe you're playing an actual MMO, even if there isn't really a persistent world and everything is instanced. End game is questionable. Some people at cap have already cancelled their sub, complaining there is not enough to do for capped players. This could improve with updates, but that will take some time.
So depending on what you find important, you'll like or dislike this game.

You can do most of that in EQI....
Also innovation isn't limited to combat. SWTOR is innovative just not in Combat.

please elaborate if you will I'd love to hear.. the VO/Story is in no way innovative.. its the same exact model they have been using in all there games for years and years.. yes its new to the MMO genre but the game is completly instanced making it more like there single player games than even basic themeparks like Rift..

Which is really bad in a combat-focused game.
Tell that to BF3 and CODMW3.
Also since when were mmoRPGs, you know where RPG stands fo roleplaying game, games like KOTOR, Dragon Age, D&D, the genre that was never known for fast pace combat, known for well, their fast paced combat?
RPG arn't combat focused, Action RPGs such as Diablo, TorchLight and Mass Effect are. But regular RPGs?

You can't sit here and tell me that combat is the only way to innovate when every single style that of combat that you could come up with has been done before.

In a themepark MMO like this calculate the amount of time crafting, running around, reading or listening to quest dialog, and combat.. guarntee you combat is by far the highest % of time spent every time

everything hasn't been done before.. watch some videos of combat in blade & soul or tera and tell me which persistant MMO plays like that.. even GW2 to a lesser extent uses a lot of new ideas to combat.. where in any shape or form does this game step up the basic themepark model? they went backwards offering your basic run of the mill class types and horribly basic talent trees.

no you said these types of games were not combat-oriented and how can you say they when MOST of the time you are playing is in combat

It also can give you an idea of who to target. If one player has a massive amount of healing, then maybe you should go after them.
It's really just one of those things that I didn't realize how much I missed until it wasn't there.
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
Which is really bad in a combat-focused game.
please elaborate if you will I'd love to hear.. the VO/Story is in no way innovative.. its the same exact model they have been using in all there games for years and years.. yes its new to the MMO genre but the game is completly instanced making it more like there single player games than even basic themeparks like Rift..

Using your logic, nothing would no longer be innovative.

But you are argueing the case of repetativness, I don't find TORs combat repetative so your argument does not effect me.
It would be like telling some who likes red apples not to eat one because you don't care for them.
everything hasn't been done before.. watch some videos of combat in blade & soul or tera and tell me which persistant MMO plays like that.. even GW2 to a lesser extent uses a lot of new ideas to combat.. where in any shape or form does this game step up the basic themepark model? they went backwards offering your basic run of the mill class types and horribly basic talent trees.

no you said these types of games were not combat-oriented and how can you say they when MOST of the time you are playing is in combat
