It managed to do something that almost every major MMO launch in the last 3 years did. ( WoW, Age of Conan, Rift and maybe even Aion) The thing to watch is how many subscription actually hang on past the first 30 days and the critical 60 day mark.
Woot . I suspect that the OP's number will be much high with just the fans that follow the Star Wars IP, give it a couple days to get some real numbers going. .
Heck even I am playing through the Story on my Sith and having fun, but just like when I played Dargon Age, Skyrim and Mass Effect, I am still taking time to play an MMORPG, in this case EQ2.
After playing 40+ hours of SWOTR so far it is really a SRPG ( Storyline Role Playing Game ) with a few mulitplayer options, it is hardly a Massive Mulitplayer experience. It may have Massive number of players but you will never see them tucked away in one of the gazillion instances. If you are curious what Massive Multiplayer is like, check out Ogrimmar on any of the Heavily Populated WoW servers, it is a huge town alive with hundreds of other players.
I call sitting in Orgrimmar with hundreds of idiots jumping around spamming buffs annoying as crap. Just wait until the little Pandas arrive - what a joy that will be to behold
Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.
Congrats to Bioware and team for hitting the one million mark, now the question is how many will we keep and how many more will come into the game. I won't pop the cork yet until after the free month, but so far the doom and gloomers and haters have been proven wrong with their predictions.
With all due respect, I believe the doom and gloom haters said that the game will sell at a lot at the beginning, namely off the Star Wars and BioWare brand, and then trail off when people actually played the game.
It's an MMO you pay monthly for, people need see where it is in 3-6-12 months to really gauge it's success.
Good on SWTOR though, healthy competition will in the end only help us, the gamers.
this announcement doesnt sit well with me... considering between digital and box preorders there were supposed to be around 1.5-2million PREORDERS... meaning more now that launch is on....

i can't speak for everyone, but after i played the beta i canceled my pre order. (to me) it just wasn't a game i'd pay to play in 2011/2012. there were a lot of things missing/lacking to me. i may look at it again after a few months as the dev letter said they'll be working on a lot of the things people have been asking for (for months...), but until then i'll just play other games.

There are probably a bunch that will sit under xmas trees but 500k to 1M of em seems far fetched.

There's also going to be the Star Wars / BioWare fans who never touched a MMO that will be confused by the "credit card is needed to access this game" process.
I know to us it seems like someone has to be completely daft.
But I got some good friends who are exceptionally intelligent people just hating the process. Of course 2 of them are Canadian, but we won't hold that against them.
I'm just saying of the 2 million, there's a good chunk who are parents thinking they're buying their kids a Star Wars game and they're not going to be happy when fees are applied.
Now a days it's a common enough concept tho' that it probably won't be a 500k drop problem. But there are some issues out there with it currently that I've seen in my fellow nerd circles.
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

"Going to be"? Wrong tense. Even in this forum, people have been throwing fits over that.
Two friends of mine were given the game as a Christmas present, even though neither of them wanted it. They will play until the free month is up out of politeness and some curiosity, but after that, probably not. I don't know if there are a lot of situations like this (seriously, people still unwanted gifts?), but that's mine.
I myself will always hate the idea of having games sitting on your shelves that you cannot play because of the subscription system.
Nobody's been proven wrong yet, unless you count the obvious "the game will die as soon as it launches" predictions as anything but stupidity.
The game has achieved initial success. Whether it's gameplay retains player interest is uncertain until more time passes. There are such factors as levelling speed, amount of content, the addictiveness of the endgame, and of course, Bioware's ability to continue delivering new content that MATCHES the quality of current content. (At a reasonable speed, too)
Can't judge the game's success yet. Too many future variables.
I'm really sick of the whole "There's a massive fanbase for X", or "Y would be a WoW-killer if it just had a chance".
There is no massive conspiracy waiting in the MMO playerbase.
There are no "sleeper-agent fans" waiting to convert once the X or Y is unleashed on the world.
Nice, but a bit premature. The more telling statistic will be the number of subscriptions at the 1-month mark when people start to get billed.
I like how the bar for success for this game has to constantly keep moving when the haters are faced with the news that this game is doing well.
I pre-ordered, but I'm at my parents house for Christmas and haven't had a chance to play at all. Also the game didn't get delivered to my house until TODAY.

Lol, I'm a "doomer-gloomer hater" and I've predicted 2 million+ sales... (and yes, I live under a slimy rock with the rest of the negative un-constructive people borderline-terrorists who don't like what SW has become and what BW/EA is doing with it, junkies and pedophiles the lot of us)
However, that "subs" has to be taken with a pinch of salt here because according to EA you cannot even access the "free month" unless you become a subscriber. In that light, that one million suddenly looses its luster. WAR made 2 million before it's unfortunate ingnomious demise so....
Anyways, I hope all the nice people in BW who didn't have any say in game-design decisions keep their jobs or at least get their last paychecks and have something to be proud of listed in their resumes. As for the arogant morons saying "whoever is not copying wow is stupid" I hope they end up homeless and forgotten. If I had a wish for Christmas it would be that SW:TOR bankrupts the travesty that is EA and we all enter a new and glorious age of imaginative and fun games once again.

What does this have to do with anything? I'm Canadian and there is absolutely nothing wrong with being Canadian.
However, that "subs" has to be taken with a pinch of salt here because according to EA you cannot even access the "free month" unless you become a subscriber.
Are you serious? If that's true, they have no right to brag until they're a few months in. And even then, that's a really shady tactic... but it's EA. I don't expect much else.
There were supposedly over 900k pre-orders of digital copies alone. That was not counting boxed pre-orders, or of course box sales since official release. This actually seems pretty low..........It will of course decline after the first month, and much more when other big name mmo's come out next year. Hmmmm, I had suspected a retention rate of around a million but I'm guessing may be more like 500k or something like that in a year.
However, that "subs" has to be taken with a pinch of salt here because according to EA you cannot even access the "free month" unless you become a subscriber.

They require you to set up a subscription plan so it'll auto-renew at the end of the free month. Kind of like every other MMORPG with "Valid credit card or game time card required to play" printed on the front of the box.
Nice, but a bit premature. The more telling statistic will be the number of subscriptions at the 1-month mark when people start to get billed.

Wasn't 500.000 the minimum number of players for SWTOR to survive? With a 50% retention right now they would be barely surviving.
However, that "subs" has to be taken with a pinch of salt here because according to EA you cannot even access the "free month" unless you become a subscriber.

I know they can stoop that low; after all they support the SOPA act, proof positive that they have no soul. I just can't remember that many games, even that many MMOs, that have required me to give up my credit card info for free playtime. If you like the game, the auto-renewal is convenient. If you don't, and you happen to have other things going on at the beginning of the new year and forget, well, there's money wasted for a "free" month. They don't care, it's money in the bank for EA corporate scum.

There is if you always have jokes flying over your head.
That aside; two of my clan mates are having a real crap time with TOR's customer support at the moment and the emails always reference that they're Canadian as if it's their fault they can't get the billing straightened out. It shouldn't be a problem, but we all know how customer support can be and it's probably not that big of a deal to begin with.

Not too much for having sold 900.000 boxes in US weeks ago.
