Star Wars: The Old Republic
Developer: BioWare
Publisher: Electronic Arts
We're still logging hours in a galaxy far, far away to bring you our full review, but this award should give you an idea how we feel about BioWare's long-awaited Star Wars MMO. From day one, the renowned RPG studio said it would set its game apart from the competition with story, voice, and choice -- and we'll be a scruffy nerf herder, BioWare has delivered.
Whether playing as a member of the Republic or the Empire, as a Jedi, Sith, or any of the other classes, our staff was sucked into SWTOR by its well-written storylines -- storylines we likely would have glossed over if they weren't delivered with a staggering amount of recorded dialogue. Add in BioWare's signature dialogue trees and the element of choice, and we've become fully immersed in SWTOR unlike any MMO before it.
There are certainly disappointments, namely in the underwhelming space combat mini-game, the technically unambitious graphics, and the thin character and starship customization options, but the positives tower over those like an Imperial Walker. Given the size and scope of The Old Republic, EA and BioWare also deserve credit for a fairly smooth launch. No one likes queues, but when it means your server won't crash, they're not the end of the world. We'll be playing TOR for a long time, and we think you will, too.

Exactly how i feel. Yes game isn't perfect but positives overshadows all the negative making it to be a very enjoyable experince.

Hell the Return trailor should win awards on its own. Simply kick ass.
I would vote for Batman myself, but then again it has been sitting at like 40 of 60 acheivements completed, and I have no interest to get closer to having all of them.
Since I got into TOR heavy, it is consuming mega hrs of my time. Until that changes, it probably is my GOTY just based on time spent playing.
Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.
grats to them, but are there really any new mmo's to go against lol

Unfortunatly due to the state of the industy i liken winning this award to winning a wheel chair race...

"Don't mistake a fun game for a good game... Checkers is fun to play but its not exactly the highest point of gaming design... and definatly not worth $60 plus $15 a month"
That is MMO of the Year not New MMO of the Year.
You made it sound like SWTOR took GOTY. It got MMO of the year, and that's not saying much because it really didn't have much competition - so congrats I guess. As for best GOTY, they gave that crown to Skyrim, which also took RPG of the year.
Noted. Edited my post to reflect MMO and not Game. Blame it on me taking an arrow to the knee...
I find it funny that this game is winning so many awards during it's first month. If every MMO was judged after only 2 weeks of play then every new MMO would have been the GOTY in MMOs. lol Like I've said before awards don't equal retention which is what matters.

I agree, while its not perfect. what it does, it does well. it is one of the first MMO's I was actually willing and eager to listen to the quest all the way through. i can see myself playing this for quite a while as it progresses and more content is added.
3.4ghz Phenom II X4 965, 8GB PC12800 DDR3 GSKILL, EVGA 560GTX 2GB OC, 640GB HD SATA II, BFG 1000WATT PSU. MSI NF980-G65 TRI-SLI MOBO.
It's a wierd phenomenom, like they made an MMO for people who don't get MMOs, and don't understand why retention matters, but they sure do seem to be lapping it up. For now.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
Its like the Emmys.
Everything on TV is crap, but they still have to have an awards show.
Out for a week and wins MMO of the year? Not saying this because I don't like the game but because it's been out for a week... Good to know not to take anything Gamespy has to say in the future with a grain of salt.
i would give it to rift honestly, at least they tried something new. It only got mmo of year because it says star wars on the box. open world pvp where you get not xp for killing players = fail.
I'm not surprised. Another MMO title wins MMO GOTY by default. Every year our beloved genre is stuck in a rut and the next...least crappiest title we jump into like a pack of hungry wolves.
We're that starved.
This is pretty much like Obama's Peace Nobel prize. The game has been released a few weeks ago and they can know it enough to take that decision?
I don't have anything against SWTOR but this sounds more a convenient award than the fruit of a serious analysis.
I'm with you, Rift may not have been all that great, but it is a better game.
Gamespy MMO game of the year and the winner is... bought and paid for

ITS TOO HARD! - Matt Firor (ZeniMax)
I think SWTOR is the better game. Technically Rift is better put together. The graphics are better, and there are less performance issues. the soul system is deeper and the invasions are cool. But the lack of soul is a killer. the game is as bland as they come and everything is to claustrophobic, crammed in a tiny world like a can of sardines.
SWTOR shares some of Rift's shortcomings and isnt oozing soul, but its got a hell of a lot more than Rift does. The linear progression sucks. The graphics are fine but obviously not on Rift's level, however there is more to look at in SWTOR, more times youll want to spin the cmaera around and look at stuff. Soloing (the bulk of leveling content in both games) is way more fun in SWTOR (opinion, but a majority one) and the flashpoints are also fun. Crafting is much better in SWTOR as well. I really struggle to find anything content wise that Rift outdoes SWTOR on besides the invasions. Ultimately SWTOR might share the same fate as Rift (substantial decrease in population) because they share many of the same drawbacks, but I think SWTOR does more in some key areas that will make its retention a bit higher than Rift but nowhere near 75%+
That said, SWTOR winning MMO of the year is ridiculous because of its release date. It should absolutely go to Rift and SWTOR should be eligible next year when hopefully the competition is a lot better.
This statement is ridiculous. Many people feel SWTOR is the better game and to say SWTOR tried nothing new is just being intentionally ignorant. It *clearly* does things not present in other MMOs. I dont think better story and world invasions are really enough to overcome the fact both games made a very WoW-like themepark.
The issue isnt is SWTOR better than Rift (it is, or at least a case can strongly be made that it is), its should a game released dec 20th be game of the year (it shouldnt)
I agree.
What's sad is Rift has parts that if SWTOR had but in it's own format would be even better, like random events, I hate when on Typhon it was on the same level as Rift I mean the flesh raiders standing and fighting periodically running up to the jedi and dieing, but it would of been awesome if they actually tried to get through and take over that spot IMO, and if they did take over one of the jedi over there would warn new comers that the area was taken over please retake it and free them.
But what they did was opposite, that right there would of made a understandable first impression of GOTY IMO.
I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.
I'm not afraid to tell trolls what they [need] to hear, even if that means for me to have an forced absence afterwards.
P2P LOGIC = If it's P2P it means longevity, overall better game, and THE BEST SUPPORT EVER!!!!!(Which has been rinsed and repeated about a thousand times)
Common Sense Logic = P2P logic is no better than F2P Logic.
Yeah Rift has such stiff combat and slow gameplay, definitely deserves game of the year....not.
game has a lot of negatives but it's MMO game of the year.
That speaks volumes
the best blog of the net
It also clearly lacks things that some feel make it a good game. I also feel it is to shallow to really be conciddered a MMO and realy is KOTOR 3 with multiplayer options. Add the name on the box and the fact that it just came out and you can see why some think the game sold on IP and hype alone rather than it's "Award Winning" gameplay. While I got bored of Rift before initial month was over, I also think it deserves the title more than TOR and I wouldn't say that if 2011 actually had any decent MMO's which it didn't.
RIP Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan and Paul Gray.
Pick any MMO of the year and i will show you huge list of negatives.

And SWTOR doesn't? That is one of the most disliked aspects of SWTOR is its clunky and unresponsive combat. There were two huge threads on it here on these forums, and a gazillion on the official forums, in fact here..take a look at this thread. http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=105955
