Should crafting be an integral part of the game? Or just a "diversion?"

I think that it's important to remember that to most of the world outside our little hobby, *any* MMO is considered an absolutely insane commitment of time and energy.

That being the case I think the question becomes who exactly as entitilement issues then?

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Casuals get games because there are lots of them and they spend money.  Money gets games made.  Hardcores are rare and thus don't have as much (combined) wealth to spend on games.  Thus casuals get games.   You earn in game gear with time spent, you earn MMOs with spending power.  So you asking for MMOs without the massive spending power of the casual market is like casuals asking for gear without putting in time to get it.

I think crafting should be a big part of any good mmorpg. Items should be very good and maybe even the best in the game, but it should not be for everyone.. It should be hard and timeconsuming and very rewarding to the players who invest time and money into learning it.

Crafting in Anarchy online was great. You have to have the exact unique ingredients and combine them with eachother in the correct order to make a very specific item that does not drop anywhere. In anarchy online you cannot survive without hiering or knowing a crafter. They even make guild cities.

Or crafting in Vanguard. Also great! Completely different tho. In vanguard craftign was a minigame of sorts where you would get complications while crafting and you had to counter it with the correct tools or items. It took acual skill and thought to make the good items.

This is happening as we speak. These games are becoming mindless, easy button console games. People dont want to invest there time. " Dident get that drop from the instance you ran? Not a problem. Here is a PLAQUE! collect enough of these and you get a REWARD!"

Higher drop rates for rare and ultra rare gear comming from normal mobs. The abbsence of crafting as a whole. PVP is a joke now. Arena style bullshit. nothing to fight for other then oh guess what. MORE GEAR!

The Casuals are thoughing there money at games like RIFT WOW and the like for what? because it will take them 5 hours less to do something on that game then it would another game. Time savers? To be honest i like that those games are around. Keeps the types of people that want to play them from coming to the games i want to play. to bad there arent any to play. New games.

Only problem is those with the money that gives the OK to make these games are still on WOWs marketing verson of making money. they could give a rats ass about what kind of game it is as long as its goin to follow THAT model and make them massive amounts of money.

And who cares if the game fizzles out in a years time. Took 80 mil to make said game lets to some math...

    80 MIL cost...

lets say that 1.5 mil people bought said game at 50 bucks a pop. ( im saying 50 taking into account CE sales)

Thats 75 mil already. just another 5 mill and we break even.

If no one else buys this game and every one subs for 3 mouths at lets say 12.99...

    Thats 19,485,000

things are starting to look good.

These are the things that get games made. This is what investors look at. And like i said. untill a game co makes a brand new sandbox type of game that adheres to the wow model of making money then were f-u-c-k-e-d and we will continue to see lack luster crafting models as long as the best gear in the game comes from raids.

    Oh.

Well typically the term "mutually exclusive" means mututally exclusive.  So you can imagine why I felt the need to clarify that the two concepts aren't mutually exclusive.

No no no . i do not have a problem with hard core gamer getting some games. Dark Fall is made, isn't it?

But it is also fun to point out that it is unrealistic to expect developers to put in AAA investment into a niche market. So if by some miracle, EA spent $100M on a sandbox, ffa pvp game, more power to you. I am just pointing out that i won't bet any money on that happening anytime soon.
