Yeah, I'm definitely going to stress out the WvWvW, see if we really can have 100sVs100Vs100s battles without the game crippling to a halt (like SW:TOR's Ilum). However at least we know that the game could handle large crowds, before it was optimized.

We shouldn't compare ANet's beta timelines between GW and GW2.  For one, they were a new and smaller company when they were launching GW.  They've also said numerous times in the last couple years that the open beta for GW2 would be short and close to release because they want the game essentially complete and ready when players get their first real test of it.  When he says "we’ll aggressively ramp up the size of our beta test events " in March and April I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a launch in June or July.

Funny thing is that only the naysayers like yourself aproclaim that GW2 will be the Messiah of the MMORPG genre. Only those that have loafty expectations are the ones that won't have their expectations met. But the vast majority of GW2 fans following the game won't be.

I specifficaly stated that I wish the game sucess, but it's not my cup of tea. I wouldn't call me a "naysayer". I didn't say one word bad about it. Of course, If I'm not all about it, I'm called a "naysayer". Thanks,

Also, as for the highlighted red..... thats who I'm talking about. If you don't have ridiculously high expectations and don't think the game is going to be the greatest thing ever made.. I'm not talking to you...lol. I'm talking to the ones with the loafty expectations, and there are a lot of them. It's not just GW2, there are folks who overhype every game and end up angry. Just look at TOR.

I think as Gw2 followers the information we have available are about the core mechanics of the game rather than the extra nice features. New MMORPGs tend to advertise game features like 'MASSIVE PVP' or 'Over 1000 mounts' or use pre-rendered videos to promote themselves. Most of these features are likely 'endgame' features and things you're never going to see until max lvl or until a ton of grinding has happened.

I'm not saying that Gw avoids doing these things but they also include information about the very meat of the game. Not too many games boast about 'flat lvling curve' or the ways they have gone about helping players play together. Most of the mechanics we know about are prominent features of the game that we will be experiencing throughout the world and not just specific parts of it.

If we took a closer look at previous buildups to release we may be able to spot the absence of information between the lines. I'm sure GW1 didn't talk about it's relatively simple quest system pre-release, all the hype was about the ccg skill system and missions/storyline. I knew what to expect going into GW1 and wasn't disappointed.

Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?

Yeah I understand what you mean, however ArenaNet are really not like any other MMO dev out there. In the way that all the features that are at the forefront of the PR (Personal Story, Dynamic Events, Active Combat & Competitive PvP), they have made an effort to show them to the general public and say, "Here are these features we've been boasting. They are in the game and ready for you to try them out." Pretty much the only major feature that hasn't been tried is the WvWvW, so I guess that is the only area, where even people like me following the game, can be disappointed.

Also ArenaNet don't use pre-rendered cutscenes like Blizzard  and them, so they haven't been trying to deceive us yet. :P

Yes we should.  We really should.  Though the quote seems to be gone from the GW2 wiki now, they said, prior to changes on the wiki in December, that the time between open beta announcement and release would be much quicker than that of GW1's.  I'm not sure how they know this in advance, but that's what they said.  Maybe they removed it because it sounded too "certain" for their traditional "when it's ready" track record.

Well the thing is it seems like all these assumptions from your part are driven from your indifference for the game. What if those specific individuals' expectations are met?

I'm just glad they stopped using the guy that kept saying 'painterly artisanal aesthetic'. So glad Arena aren't like most devs. The videos of their crew really do it for me. They seem passionate and actually seem like they want to play the finished product and not just force it out the door. (I am not unaware of the magic of video editing and the possibilty that not every arenanet employee is dying to play the game)

Well maybe not pre-rendered but some of those camera angles in the skill vids are just for showing off haha XD

Will have to find ye leading to release or during or something.

Thats how a gw2 fanboy think, and thats why the game will fail. swtor is getting content updates everysingle month, we still have at least 6 months for the gw2 release, can you imagine how huge swtor will be in 6 months?. And gw2 is B2P, not p2p, people will buy it, then complaing because the game doesnt have the amount of content that a b2p mmo like swtor have.  At the end, everyone will play gw2 like a dota game or BF3. But we will find the true about the game in the incoming beta, i wonder what the gw2 fanboys will do if the game is not that great.

Well if you want to compare them in how they will be different (as I was getting at in the rest of my post). :)  Yes, things they have said during GW2 development indicate that they won't be doing a "traditional" long open beta that games in the past have done, but more of a "open preview" shortly before launch.

Honestly, if everyone is happy with the game, I will be happy. I don't need a game to fail or suceed to give meaning to the game that I'm playing, unlike a lot of folks around here. I play what I find fun. While I'm having fun, I'm a fan. If I get bored, I quit and I'm no longer a fan. I don't bad mouth it, I just stop playing it.

I'm only indifferent to Gw2 as from what I've heard so far, I don't like the mechanics. I'm not saying they're bad, just not for me. I'm one of thoese rare people who like the "holy trinity". I like being just a healer. People belittle me for it and call it "wack a mole healing" but it doesn't bother me. I like it. Based on what I've read, it's not for me. However, that doesn't mean I don't want it to do well. I hope it does very well, like i've said before, the more really good games there are out there, the more it will push other companies to make a better product. I don't think it benefits anyone for a game to fail.

And who knows, perhaps I play it and like it, if that does happen, I'll be a fan...lol

the playthroughs of GW2 (conventions and the like), it's really boring compared to SW:TOR....The voice acting isn't as good, there's not nearly as much of it and for the most part it just feels like Rift 2.0 mixed with some GW1...I used to really want this game, but now I'm not so sure. I'll probably get it because its B2P, but they're talking about how they don't believe in an end-game, so the game they create is what people will be playing, from start to finish over and over again instead of supporting post-cap content to a major degree. This bugs me!

Bloody hell with this forum's copy past issues anymore.

Anyway, since it won't let me edit the above correctly, I'll just post the rest of my post here. The above quote is what everyone keeps going by. They specifically said they would 'open beta access to more people' which, in fact, does not necessarily mean there will be an actual Open Beta. It just means, literally, that they would open the beta access to more people. Why this still keeps being posted by MMORPG sites as an actual Open Beta, I don't have a clue. But I hope they're in on something the rest of us aren't.

@ MMORPG - your forum has recently started highlighting quotes automagically and it can't be undone, and carries over the the rest of the post ;< make that stop pls.

I could have misunderstood it, but from what I read from the article, those beta events are still closed betas but larger scaled, and not open beta. Meaning that open beta will be after those, at the earliest in May. Maybe a June release will be possible, but looking at how ANet has taken their time in general, I don't expect them to rush their beta tests that much. I'm expecting a September release, if it's earlier, nice, but I'm not really counting on it.

But it can't be called a Closed Beta, but this type of testing isn't open to the public. The Beta tests ANet seems to be planning are open to the public.

Those Beta Events for Rift weren't actually Closed Beta either. If they were then there wouldn't have been a legal way for the public to access the content in the game.

Heh, well, this is actually where it shows how cleverly the mmorpg.com crew has worded the news. Look closely how it is stated:

'Open Beta and Release This Year'

This is without a doubt true: open beta as well as release will be both this year. Nowhere in the news article you'll find the mmorpg.com staff saying that the beta tests in March and April are Open Beta. Also in the GW2 article you don't see them stating that the beta tests in March and april are Open Beta, only that more people will be invited to beta test.

Only to careless readers the wording is such that the title and text could be misinterpreted as that the Open Beta is in March and April. But in fact, the mmorpg.com people never really said that, nor the ANet article :-)
