WoW is the only game i'd consider populated... As much as people hate it and flame and troll wow on this site.
I don't play or enjoy WoW anymore, but It's the only game out right now where a new player can start up, and find groups for just about anything from 1-85 or whatever max level is now. The instance finder is amazing in that game and will quickly match you up for lower level instances. While things might have changed, each time I started a low level character to play with a friend who was giving it a shot, we were able to jumpt into instances at any level rather quickly.
THAT is the number on killer of MMO's in my opinion...
Old players who started from the beginning already finished the content and are well past it. They get bored and quit. New players come to give the game a try but get frustrated (or bored) as they're unable to find groups to do the content that kept the first people happy long enough to get to max level...
If a developer can't provide new players an enjoyable MULTIPLAYER experience beyond the initial release of the game then new players will not stay and the population will slowly die out.
A quality cross-server instance finder/grouper thingy solves this and in my experience only those "hardcore" players who jump into a game from day one and are max level hate the idea. Any new player, fresh meat, trying to join a game 2-3+ years down the road will find lower content empty and lifeless and the instances impossible to find groups for. This forces them to skip a HUGE majority of the content that made leveling for the FIRST comers enjoyable (I said this again I know...)
I've been looking for an MMO to play and I keep my eye on all of them but I have yet to ever give this one a try and I don't think I will. Unfortunately it sounds like developers are horrid the moderators/GM's they employ are even worse. The players tend to have nothing but negative things to say about the game... Now, WoW is very popular and if you read these forums you would think the same thing about that game, so maybe MO is actually good and MMORPG.com is just the place the trolls who hate it come to complain?

If net sales go up, they hire more programmers. If net sales go down, they lay some people off. It's just a game they play to avoid paying steep taxes in Sweden.

Let me fix that for you, according to their last financial report where they can't lie (in contrat to certain other places/people)):

Please, spare me that crap. That argument keeps popping up few months after each financial report and each next financial report proves it wrong. You honestly believe that games population increased tenfold during a month for no particular reason? Well.. then we are done here, no use trying to argue this logically with you.
Maybe people are finally starting to realize that Mortal Online is actually a pretty good game and is only getting better over time. Maybe they are starting to realize that if they REALLY want to play a sandbox game, they are going to have to support one of the ones that actually exist instead of doing nothing but whining...
In my opinion, Mortal Online is already in pretty good shape and has done nothing but improve since release. It is getting better all the time and it deserves much more credit than it gets around here.

/agree Theyve come a looooooong way since release I may add though. I wouldnt totally recommend people come play it until after Awakening comes out though.

You are talking about MO correct? I want to be sure because I could have sworn that MO was the product of SV a Swedish company that hasn't turned a profit nor delivered on a promise in the last 2 years.
I am still waiting for my release DVD and map. When will that promise be fullfilled? When will that capital city (Tiner something) ever exist?
That is the same company you are talking about, correct? Just want to make sure.

I also agree. I'm basically waiting on Awakening before I resub myself and hopefully can finally recommend the game to a lot of old gamer friends who I've known since UO.

Yes. I am talking about MO. I haven't seen anyone around here arguing that Star Vault has done everything right. I am certainly not saying that. But the game IS in a MUCH better state than it was at release and it is only improving with time. Have I always been happy with Star Vault? No. Have I still supported them because I believe in what they are trying to do? Absolutely. Any true sandbox fan should.
They may not have released a map or a DVD, but Star Vault HAS kept many of their promises and the game is continually improving with each and every patch. This cannot be denied.
Also, you obviously haven't read the details on the patch they are working on right now. It will finally add Tindrem (the capital city) to the game.

Why should sandbox fans support inferior products? Because the companies making them claim they are "sandboxes", while charging AAA prices for buggy and unfinished games? On the contrary I would say sandbox fans should refrain from supporting these shams, as they only give sandbox games a bad reputation.
Also, please elaborate on SV's track record of kept promises. There's a long list of stuff that supposedly was "coming soon", but never appeared in game.
Star Vault told everyone that they were going to release the game with very few features and add them over time. This is an indie project, so this approach is entirely understandable. EVE at one time was a barely playable shell of a game... as was MO for much of its early existence. Like EVE, Mortal Online has been getting better with every patch. Star Vault warned all of us that it was going to be a rough ride at first, but they assured us things would improve over time. This has happened. The difference between the game at 'release' and now is staggering...
The reason I think every true sandbox fan should, at the very least, support SV and Mortal is because they are one of the few companies with the vision and the guts to bring us a sandbox game like many of us want. If it continues to greatly improve, MO may even become the ideal game for many of us over time. Even if you don't like the game in its current form, the success of MO will help strengthen the sandbox genre and may encourage larger developers to take risks on these types of games. In that respect, it is in EVERY sandbox fan's best interest to support every developer who is attempting to do this. Star Vault is a very small indie company with very few resources and it makes a huge difference if people stand behind them and support them in their efforts.

Sorry, but gaming is a hobby for me not some kind of cause. However, I am a fan of sandbox games that has a complete different take. I think small indie companies that deliver an inferior product while charging us “full-price” to keep funding their “vision” hurts the genre. Why? Because is sends the message that sandbox fans are so desperate for a game that caters to their wants that they will easily hand over their $$$ to any unscrupulous developer that talks a good “vision”.
Which one of us sandbox fans is right? Who knows but don’t lump us all together and send us on your merry crusade to save the genre. SV is not the “king” I would march behind…

A lot of people like the game a lot even as it is now. We don't consider it an 'inferior' product because it already offers a better sandbox experience than almost any other game on the market.
I'm not saying you have to give them your money, but why carry on bashing them on the forums? Their success only means good things for sandbox games in general, even if you don't like this particular game. Bashing games from small indie companies does nothing to further the genre. It only steers developers further away from this kind of game.
You say that this is just a hobby for you, yet many of you seem to make MO-bashing some sort of cause in itself. If its really just a hobby, why do you care enough to post so much negativity about it? If its just a hobby, why not simply move on once you realize that a game isn't for you?

This is where most of us disagree with you. The last thing the MMO genre needs is more indie companies sending reps to lie on public forums, make statements about game content that they dont have and dont fix critical game bugs. Seriously, SV continues to lie that the population is growing and yet EVERY quarterly statement says it continues to fall. The company has never made a profit and has already called for two stock splits. Is this what you feel we need more of in the MMO genre?
I understand you like the game and might enjoy playing it but there is no way you can honestly say that SV is an honest company and that you would want the future of MMO's to go in this unfinished direction. I do agree we need more sandbox MMO's but I dont agree they need to be as terribly broken as MO is. Seriously, if MO would stop lying about everything, change their sub fee to $8 a month and create a list from the actual players of whats wrong and just focus on it, SV could turn it around. It wont happen because it is being managed by an ex-underwear model with a big ego and no actual business experience.

IMO, it sends a stronger message to the investors when they see money spent on games other than wow clones. If people want their sandbox games, they need to step up and act as a patron to their cause. Be selfless not selfish. The answer to most of your questions, I already gave in my post. Here, I'll highlighted for you...
As far as the "move on" part: Again, this is a clever ploy by you fans of the game to make detractors of this game seem like some obsessed tribe that has nothing else to do all day but bash your sacred game. The reality is so much more mundane. See, as part of our hobby, we like to talk about it.
For me personally, I like to read and post on these forums when I'm at work. It is my personal 5 min breaks to regroup in between tasks. I like to talk about games: those that I like and those I don't. As long as I dont violate the rules set out by MMORPG.com, I have as much right as anyone here to post my views. That being said, I don't go out of my way to post about MO in every forum I come across, I don't have a personal blog talking crap about the game nor do I think about MO during much of my day. I actively play EvE, TF2 and Civ V during most of my down-time at home. So there is nothing to "move on" about...
The bigger question is, why do you all care? (And please don't tell me that a few people posting negative things in one web site is the REAL reason your game is doing so poorly...)
A man is his own easiest dupe, for what he wishes to be true he generally believes to be true...

Your OPINION and not a fact (something so many posters here have a problem with). I've posted why I disagree with your opnion already on my previous post.
Faith should be reserved for religion and not your hobby. Selfless and selfish have nothing to do with it but thank you for the implied put down. Keeps reinforcing my view on the fans of this game. I swear, MMOs seems to be a religion with some of you folk....

While I realize that MO has its faults its still my choice of a game to play and sub to it in its current state.
Awesome game imo and about to get more awesome.
I dont think all sandbox fans should support it though. For example, I love sandbox games but I dont want to give money to CCP because they have EVE because I dont enjoy playing a ship.

I quote you for truth.
MO will always be a failure (150 to 2k subs are a joke for a MMO) as long as this clown is in charge of running things.
His game developing talent = no clue, does he even know how to hex edit?
His game designing skils = suffers from cross-eyed myopia.
His business sense = non-existent.
When you got a lead weight like Henrick front at the captain's spot, the only place the ship will go is nosedown.
MO itself is a festering mess and if it is a hidden pearl that some people like to think it is, then you got to wade through leagues of steaming rat crap to find it.
I would rather a new dev house, independent or corporate, buy this company for chump change, fire all the current untalented A-holes in it and start from scratch using the MO concepts with an entire new codework to bring it into fruition.
But it would be far more cost effective and less labour intensive to just let MO and SV die.

Support doesn't have to be monetary. I also don't like EVE, so I don't play it or pay them money. Still, I do think that CCP is doing good things for the MMO community and sandbox games in particular. Their success is in my best interest even though I can't stand actually playing their game. For this reason, you won't see me repeatedly posting in the EVE forums about how much I dislike it.

So let me get this straight. You played the game during beta for a couple days and then deleted it off your hard drive and you have the knowledge to say its doing bad for the genre? I really dont see where your expansive knowledge of the game comes in after a couple days of beta and gleaning whatever knowledge you can from other MO critics on the site? Care to enlighten me?

Any new player, fresh meat, trying to join a game 2-3+ years down the road will find lower content empty and lifeless and the instances impossible to find groups for.

A man is his own easiest dupe, for what he wishes to be true he generally believes to be true...
It takes a little bit of faith and forces you to drop the me me me must have it now attitude.

Kyleran: "Now there's the real trick, learning to accept and enjoy a game for what it offers rather than pass on what might be a great playing experience because it lacks a few features you prefer."
John Henry Newman: "A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault."
FreddyNoNose: "A good game needs no defense; a bad game has no defense." "Easily digested content is just as easily forgotten."
LacedOpium: "So the question that begs to be asked is, if you are not interested in the game mechanics that define the MMORPG genre, then why are you playing an MMORPG?"
A man is his own easiest dupe, for what he wishes to be true he generally believes to be true...
See. A valid opinion I don't agree with but I'm not calling anyone selfish or asking for faith or state that because he doesn't support CCP the entire genre is in danger...
A man is his own easiest dupe, for what he wishes to be true he generally believes to be true...
The difference is I think SV is doing something bad to the genre and we are all the worse for it...
A man is his own easiest dupe, for what he wishes to be true he generally believes to be true...
10 pages allready ,people are interested about this game no matter what (opens MO metalbox and starts to install)

Beauty of the internet: I don't owe you or anyone any explanations. Go through my past post history if you care to know my issues with the game.
