Check Here for Thoughts from People Who Have Played TERA

baritone3kbaritone3k Member Posts: 223

As we near release and hopefully people are looking to preorder and get into the betas coming up, I am sure there will be lots of people looking to see if this is a good game and worth getting.

Please feel free to post your first or secondhand impressions of TERA and ask to ask questions.

Is this game worth a try?

IMO - it IS.

I have logged several days in TERA, and I found it to be an absolute blast. If it was in English, I would have kept a sub going and played a lot more, but it was tough having everything in Korean, etc.

Is this game innovative?

It is an evolution of the genre in terms of combat and healing. If you like a challenge, and want to be able to have your skill be a greater part of victory than just your time logged and gear hoarded, then this will be a blast for you. There is no autotarget. You have to stay on point and navigate around the enemy and attack in its direction to hit it (and it needs to do the same with you, so there is a chance for dodging blocking outside of a dice roll). It is more akin to God of War than otehr MMOs in combat. That requires you to pay attention and have good reflexes. The same goes for healing. Healing in this game requires the healing spell to hit similarly to an FPS. You have to get your heal onto the person you want healed. No just playing whack-a-mole with unit frames.

This is a huge positive for people who are good at and enjoy action gaming. It will be a major barrier for people who like to tune in and tune out and just use the game as a chat room/be hypnotized by the gameplay.

Is it an open world?

Pretty much. It is similar to WoW in that there are few to no loading screens and instancing for a certain number of dungeons, etc.

How does it look?

IMO - this is the best looking MMO of the bunch. GW2 MAY match it, but for me it is so much crisper than FFXIV's graphics, and I love the gfx in FFXIV. If you like Gears of War or any other contemporary Unreal Engine game, you will love this. It is very colorful and uses really weighty, high textures (if you choose to enable them - which I do). There is the chance that the over the top sensuality/sexuality of some of the characters may make you uncomfortable or want to zoom way out if there are other people around (maybe it's just me). But tbh most of what has been pegged in criticisms as creepy (Ellin shots, the casters belly-dancer moves, etc) are not going to accidentally happen for you if you aren't zoomed in trying to make them happen and hey did put are not really noticeable at the most games zoom out anyway.

Is it like WoW?

Only in terms of being colorful, in a persistent world, and having gear to advance and play dess up with. This game has other features like a polical system which seaprate it from the humdrum and for the most important difference, see the combat innovation.

Someone please make a good MMO.

my only beef with Tera so far is the weird plasticky feeling  I get from some environments, especially buildings and trees.

it's the same feeling I got from a lot of other Korean games like Lineage 2 and Aika Online.

It's definitely a great game, but I wish the environments were a little more..."liquid" and "dynamic"

    I am interested for sure.

If nothing else because it sounds like its a break for the same old same old tired combat system. Debating on preordering, just a little concerned about the lawsuit tho. Worried that the US courts will put a last minute injunction (sp?) on the release until it goes to trial.

Wonder if you preorder in US can you play on EU servers. As in if the launch in NA is held up would I be able to play on EU servers? Or is the US IP blocked from EU?

Sorry if this has been answered somewhere else, I looked and couldnt find where that was brought up.

I don't think they are IP blocking... can't remember where I read it though.

just found the IP block article for NA Tera

So if you're in EU/NA/SA/Oceania you can play on En Masse servers

The EU servers were more strict though. I think they're blocking everyone who's not european, including Russia

I would like to know about the EU servers as well. So far, Korean was restricted to Korea (using KSSN no by IP blocking) and Japan used IP blocking to keep it restricted to only Japan.

I would love to play on a German server with Germans. I can then better excuse my time online as part of immersion language training.

I agree about the combat.  That's the one major thing that has me interested in the game.  To one degree or another, I enjoyed the combat in Vindictus and DCUO, and the combat in TERA just looks like it's much better than those, so....

I'm also really interested in the PvP and political system.

Still looking forward to this game.

The trees look and feel better than 95% of MMOs I've played. Buildings are close to that.

This is not true. Europe is not IP blocked except for Russia I think.

If you buy the US version of the game, you can only play on the US servers. You can play on the EU servers from the US, but you would have to buy the EU version.

Thanks for answering that for me =)

Thats pretty much what I thought, just wasnt sure. I would preorder today if not for the lawsuit. It would not suprise me at all for the US courts to issue a temporary injunction on the release for NA until the actual court trial.

Sucks that this is hanging over their heads. Hopefully nothing will come of it.

I think an injunction is unlikely for two reason. First, the suit in Korea didn't get the game shutdown there. I think there was a settlement and the developers directly responsible got in trouble but the game still runs.

Second, in order to get an injuction NCSoft would have to demonstrate to the court how letting the game go fowards substantially and directly causes them harm. Considering that Lineage 3 has never been released and therefore TERA's release is not in direct competition with NCSoft. On the other hand, an injunction would have a substantial impact on EnMasse. So a preliminary injunction to protect NCSoft is not going to happen at all. If there is any injunction at all it would come at the end of a completed suit. and by then it will impact more than just EnMasse but also everyone playing the game.

I don't think NCSoft is really going for having TERA shutdown. But rather, this is where the negotiations begin. Threaten the possibility of a shutdown and how that might impact sales and you might get EnMasse to move to settlement faster. I think NCSoft is simply going for more cash at this point.

    All die, so die well.

Yeah you are probably correct about that. I hope so at least.

I just see the court systems in the US as going steadily downhill when it comes to lawsuits. You can literally sue anyone for anything, and alot of times win with stuff that people should not even consider as valid.

read on the news today where a woman sued Honda because her car didnt get 50 MPG, and won o.O

I think I will go ahead and Preorder Tera after thinking about it. Amazon does not charge until it ships so no worries about anything from there I guess.

Just to reiterate...because to many people want to compare games to wow...this game is NOTHING like wow.  Not one similiarity.  If you are looking for wow, don't look here...if you are looking for a more serious game with politics...look here.  I'd recommend this game to fans of Lineage 2, RF Online, Darkfall, Mortal, Eve...games more in depth yet open and sandboxy.

The only thing that makes TERA stand out whatsoever is the combat and for people who are used to more action pased games will find this combat to get boring quite quickly, around 20 levels or so. If people are willing to waste their money then go ahead but don't bother coming back on here in a month or 2 after release complaining about the game.

  • presidentnegpresidentneg Member Posts: 19

The game IS a mmo with top notch combat, a real well built world (lol swtor lol) to explore and a year of update/content + stuff like guilds politic. If you get bored by this you're simply not into mmo.

I've played the Korean version, gfx are great and the combat is good. The zones were slightly linear in the way that Aion is, where the maps kind of funnel you in a specific direction, but it felt "open" enough not to bother me too much. I've played the closed beta of Blade & Sould as well, and I think I liked the combat there a little bit better, but it was way too "instanced" for my liking.

I don't agree totally, but it is definitely lacking.  The game just has too many aspects outside of combat that are subpar.   I can look past it, but will others?  I am just not so sure.

On a side note, how big of a download is this game? Comcast's sorry ass caps me at 250GB a month, and if I have another incident above 250G (have had 312GB, 320GB months ) I will have my internet revoked from them.

I read the download installation was 70GB? If thats the case, ill wait for the digital release.

  • CaldrinCaldrin Member UncommonPosts: 4,505

Think the download is just over 30gb..wil have to double check when i get home later..

Anyway been playing on the K server for a few days now..

OK the combat is obviously the main thing that sets this game apart from other Themepark MMOS, you can keep moving around and dodging attacks while trying to hit and so on, so very much like an action game but then on top of that you have the standard set of MMO skills that you place on your action bar, so it adds a bit mroe to the combat. I dont think the combat is quite as good as the other korean MMO on its way Blade and Soul I think i like that system better but the rest of blade and soul is not quite as good as tera,,

Other than that it seems to be your average Sandbox game, zones are set out ni a similar fashion to WoW so its not truly an open world game tho its big enough to feel like it is sometimes but there are restrictions to where you can go. Quests are your average progrssion quests go here kill that yadda yadda, but saying that it works fine as does the rest of the game its jsut as polished as any other aaa title out there.

I have not looked into the crafting or political system as i dont speak a word of korean and would not be able to figure it out haha.

The game does have some bad points thats for sure..

    1. Its very asian, i have never been a fan of weapons being 3 times the size of your character i just think it looks silly.

    2. Silly kid race for the dodgy adults to play with and an ultra stupid hampster race..

    3. The lancer class as i said in another thread this class is just stupid, using a weapon that was designed to be used on horse back to try and poke people with in ground melee combat is just plain bad. Why not give the guy a spear.. this is the most annoying bit of the game for me

Anyway Tera will not be for everyone im sure but i think it will have a solid server population for a long time.

Almost every girl thinks the Elin and Popori are cute, so I guess thats a positive about them. I also have no problem with Elin and Popori just have impressive animations. I think people just need to lighten up, its an MMO and a fantasy one at that.

This game has a ton of promising features planned and if they are released the game will be successful no doubt, only time will tell.

baritone3k - TY for your post. I've heard a lot of positive as well as negative comments on TERA. I know from a friend of mine (I met while playing Lineage II) that he had a blast on the Japanese beta's and surely will play on EU servers. But I also heard too many negative comments as well, so I'm still in doubt if I should buy TERA or not. Good thing that in the EU we have the 'mini' pre-order, allowing us to play through the beta's and head start. If in the end I like it, I think I'll get myself a boxed (special edition) version of TERA.

I am more interested in the greater scope of things. I mean the combat is nice and all but it wont keep me subbed. However a deep political PvP system will so I am more interested if it will deliver there rather than GFX and FPS type combat.

This, although the combat is a plus. However I think if they hold true to what theyve said they would add throughout this year I will no doubt stick with this game for a long time.

Server vs server region for massive pvp and pve scenarios sounds pretty awesome.

    This.

I'm in the sneak peak this weekend. If it is good, i'll get the mini pre-order. Then i have all the closed beta's unlimited to play.

It's about as safe as i've ever seen in a MMO, i will have countless opportunites to bail if i don't like it and months to decide if it's worth box price.

Although, i'm looking at Races and Classes at the moment. Quite a bit of cross-over with the melee classes, they seem very similar with ones like Swordsman being good at everything. I might play a female char lol.

Thanks peeps good read, like getting some sense of the game before trying.  I think i'll try to do preorder at gamestop and see/think I can get into beta without commiting to play it for myself.
