No, just the imbalanced ill informed gushing ones that fail to recognise any bad points.

How much money do you think they have really to spend on such things?

    based on budget?

    about 150 million.

So, conclusion. Dont read reviews and play the game for yourself and yes, i did play swtor and YES im tired of it by this point. I wanted it to be a good game and gave it a chance up to level 45 with several characters and two months of playtime - but alas, its not a good game. But everyone thinks diffrently.

Still, all reviews are paid to be said according to this site, its rather silly.

..  wouldnt take much ...  and yes it happens ALOT .. its part of there marketing strategy and gets a good bit of funding like any other Advertising Campaign ..

I have determined that I can now quit my day-job and start reviewing games "professionally". I mean, come on, these web sites must be rolling in dough by now. I'm not sure why Suzie and MikeB are even still posting. They should be on an island in the South Pacific enjoying the good life by now. Maybe they are greedy and want to live on multiple islands?

Yup, a few positive reviews and I'm set for life. Don't want to pay me? Hope you like your game being trashed from one end of the internet to the other (or at least in my little corner).

I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil

The only site I am sure is corrupt is IGN, but for the rest, who knows?

Usually when you disagree with a reviewer he is paid..but when you agree with his scores he is rational and professional individual....

Let  me see, in my business, if I make my customers mad by publicly badmouthing their product. They don't make money, they also don't give me their money out of anger, and then I don't make any money.

So yeah, most of these guys are paid reviewers. Including this place. Maybe not payola style, but indirectly...you bet.

  • XasapisXasapis Member RarePosts: 6,337

Well, when what you've experienced yourself is so much inconcistent with the review, you begin to question the integrity of the reviewer. Either the review was dictated or the reviewer was inexperienced to the point of being useless. Now, having an interview dictated doesn't necessarily means that the media/ journalist took money. Publisher pressure for inclusion on future promotions etc, works just fine, especially from a powerhouse like EA.

Yea, that is spot on. I just don't understand why the magazine would purposely put their reputation into question. Now whenever I see EGM, I'm going to disregard their magazine as 'bullshit'.

The funniest thing about this article, was he still managed to list a lot of reasons why this game doesn't deserve a 9/10, yet he masked those complaints behind a series of compliments. Lets just pull up some of those reasons 'he listed' as to why this game doesn't deserve a 9/10.

    Quoted from the article:

"MMORPGs have never really appealed to me. Sure, I spent some time poking around World of Warcraft and even took EverQuest for a whirl back in the day, but as a gamer, I gravitate toward the single-player experience."

(ok, so you have no experience in MMORPG's)

"From a PvP standpoint, I tried each of the different Warzone modes and briefly visited Ilum; though, since I’m not really a PvP fan, I didn’t concentrate on this aspect."

(So you give the game a 9/10, without even diving into one of the 'major' aspects of the game play?)

"Once you’ve decided on a class and designed your character with the usual array of sliders and options, you’ll begin on a starting planet (each side has two) and jump into your story in earnest. And that’s one of the few places the game falters."

    (That's a fairly big 'falter'.)

"Those familiar with other MMORPGs will have little problem jumping right into The Old Republic. The interface, while fairly static, doesn’t stray far from the WoW model."

    (WOW in space.)

"Tutorials are nonexistent, so players either have to feel their way through the interface like a blind man learning to read Braille or read up on online tutorials before venturing out."

(Didn't even know about this, thanks for pointing out more to hate about this game.)

"When you start receiving quests, you’ll again find yourself in familiar territory. Deliver the package, retrieve the object, kill X number of beasties-"

(I couldn't have said it any better myself)

"One nice addition is the secondary objectives that open up once you enter a quest’s territory. Usually, these appear as “defeat X number” of one enemy or another"

(Going to be honest here.. Do you really even like this game?)

"Your first sojourn between planets sends you to the Fleet for transport. From here, you can decide to head directly to your next destination or answer the call to your first Flashpoints. This is the chance for your first real taste of multiplayer. Small, daily “Heroic” quests become available on your starting planet, but these instances rarely take more than about 15 minutes and don’t offer much in terms of story development."'

(Thanks for illustrating the questionable 'mmorpg' title of this game)

"-and a means to engage in space missions. These basic, arcade-style shooting sequences make for a great diversion."

(I agree, they are worse than starfox for nintendo 64. Glad you see how shitty it its as well.)

"Unfortunately, you can tell that this area of the game wasn’t paid the most attention. Longtime Star Wars fans might be looking for something closer to the stellar X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter games, but this plays more like the old rasterized Star Wars arcade game, just with nicer graphics."

(Wow, you actually hate this game even more than I do.)

"The guild system, while not as refined as the one you’ll find in WoW, makes it easy to coordinate groups for Flashpoints, general questing"

    (Nice one)

"I wasn’t as keen on the other two Warzones: Voidstar and Alderaan. The former’s a variation on capture the flag, where players must protect a ship’s Data Core from the other faction’s assault; the later’s an all-out battle to gain control of turrets in order to knock your opponents ships out of the sky. Both of these are fun for a while, but I usually lost interest pretty quickly, yearning to get back to the story missions."

(Yup, PVP battleground are boring beyond belief)

"Finally, the endgame content contains some fantastic multiplayer, both in the form of Operations and on the planet Ilum. Operations come in eight- and 16-player flavors and present some of the most challenging areas in the game. These massive raids contain multiple bosses and will take several hours to complete. The planet Ilum offers some solid endgame PvP, with the game’s final quests. However, balance issues kept me from doing much here—one of the few letdowns I had playing The Old Republic. But as you can see, even after you finish your story, there’s plenty left to do in the Star Wars universe—and that’s without trying another character class."

(Agreed, there isn't an end game)

So.. 9/10 huh? I saw more like 5-6/10 in that write up. Considering the guy bashed the game himself with more examples than I could come up with, I have to laugh at the 9/10. Fun stuff, love seeing people try and hype this game into places it shouldn't be. Good luck bending over for EA.

They give it good marks because giving a Starwars title a bad mark doesn't sell magazines. We all know the game is no better than a 7 at best. Hype > TOR.

It's ALL about advertise funding, every review whatsoever. I know this from the inside of the business.

Personally, I always skip the professional review, and go straight for the user made reviews.

And how inside are you in this business? fun thing about internet is that people can claim anything and then get away with it.

I haven't followed EGM for years, but there was a time (at least long ago) when their reviews and write ups of games were some of the best (at least for console gaming).

For a game to get a "9" was extremely rare. In fact, some of the best games I've ever played received 8's and 8.5's because they *did* have flaws. EGM was critical and honest, but explained they were still great games despite the shortcomings and less than perfect scores.

You could count on one hand the number of games that received a 9 or higher for the ENTIRE YEAR (and this was for all the major consoles of the day). My, my, my... how the mighty have fallen.

I used to write for a danish game magizine. It's a fair amount of years ago, but I still have contact with it's owners. You would be amazed at how much publishers suck up to game reviewers, and how much influence they have on editors, who then push for a certain score from their reviewers. I have personally been told to change scores to higher ones(one of them was an EA game, yup !). By talking to colleagues, I found out that this is far from a local "problem" just within my workplace, but a widespread problem within the business.

I suspect all kinds of reviews are like this, not just game reviews.

In honor of what EGM used to be (early/mid-90's), THIS is what a 9/10 game (and a decent game magazine) looked like:

Yeah, I noticed when it was acquired by Ziff Davis in the late 90's and they tried to make the magazine more "serious," it lost a lot of the irreverence, fun, and critical edge that it had in the early to mid-90's. That was about the time I stopped reading it and gave up on print magazines altogether (except for maybe Wired and that was only because of its connection to The Well and, by proxy, The Whole Earth Catalogue). Magazines, at least in print form, will disappear entirely from daily life within the next few decades. Even the younger members here will be able to tell their kids about what it was like "back in the day" when their was a whole section in the supermarket devoted to 'em.

(but early/mid-90's Sushi-X will *still* survive)
