MMO fans have a strange definition of success. Any game that is still running is a success, and honestly if a company can support a game for a couple years that's a pretty amazing feat in itself. If they make money from the operation, and can go on to make more games, that's successful. People still think Age of Conan was a failure lol.
GW2 had 1 million signed up for beta in 2 days. How many of those are clones is hard to say, but I believe another 2 days would have doubled their signups. That's 2m right there.
Now a beta signup doesn't equal a purchase, but if beta is not a disaster it usually does. SWTOR, amazingly, had a very successful beta, which sold the game to me and a bunch of my friends. SWTOR had the advantage in bringing in a non-mmo audience, but GW2 also has an advantage in that it will bring in a large portion of GW1 fans. I would imagine most have-been or still active GW1 players will be in on day 1.
I'm going to give GW2 1 million week 1 buys just on GW1 sales figures. I'm probably underestimating there. The real question is how much GW2 can pull from current or former mmo players who aren't fans of the first game.
Still, I don't think 2m will be hard for them to reach based on this info. The real grey area is how much further they can expand the market from there, and how long the game will be able to support itself.
who cares .. number of subs is important but only in so much as they are making enough money to make new content. what's important is keeping people playing.
LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity. I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already
First week is pretty much nothing so I expect less than 2 mil. GW2 will need time to pierce the scepticism, great reviews alone won't do that, they'll need the word of mouth.
The game have been highest on the hype meter for 2 years now so I assume it will sell better than TOR based on that, and GW1 had 4 million different accounts so if 25% of the old GW2 buyers will get it the game would be halfways to 2 million.
I think it will be slightly over 2 millions, something from 2,2 to 2,5 but I voted 3 since there were nothing in between. I mostly base this on the hype and the fact that the game is B2P.
What number of sold copies the game will end on is anybodies guess, I think it will be more than the low budget first game. How many active players it will have any given month is something I wont dare to vote on.
The only way GW2 could sell over 1 million copies is if it was also on console, i really don't think the PC market alone is capable of generating that kind of numbers, but the console market, could possibly knock that figure into 4 million + ..
but only if it was on the xbox.. actually that would probably be an awesome game if they could somehow use kinect with it...

Ain´t gonna happen, at least not for the launch. It might get ported in a year or 2 though.
Otherwise is Strain (who was lead designer for the first few years of GW2) another game aimed for X-boxes in the work, it is called "Class 4" but I dunno if it will support kinect or not. That is 360 exclusive.
I don´t agree with you, games made both for PC and consoles usually suck badly and MMOs more so than other games. Console games and PC games needs to differ so they can use the strenghts of the platform it is developt on.
On this site wich I consider authors can only hype the community not provding them real picture of the game GW2 has about 3,5 M hits in past year.
There is no way GW2 will sell over 1M copies through fisrt month. Not many ppl are w8int for this game as you may think. Its not a social MMO nor its has anything to offer wich we did not seen eariel despact the fact they are claiming it will be revolution.
You have to understand that core of the MMO playerbase are older ppl, especially womens. GW2 is not the game they will play so it dont have potiential to be huge so fast. It also lack of the story that SWTOR was based on.
Lol, 1-million signed up for beta in 48 hours. It will sell well passed 5 million copies. The beta signups is just a fraction of the ppl who will buy it.

As you propobly don't know its not. Beta signups dont indicatest to copies sold in any way.

so basically GW2 will do terribly because we're all about to or are, drawing our pensions, and are probably women too..
it kind of puts the whole WoW playerbase into perspective doesnt it........... NOT

1mil beta sign ups and its only the first beta event for the fans. If this beta event is going good, the word will spread and mouth to mouth advertising is the best advertising a game can get. And after the press beta event gw2 got many more follows.
And yes it is a social, the first really social mmo for year. Unlike other mmo's you do not get punished for playing with others.
And last im a woman a not that young and played mmo's for 10 years now.

Never talk about WoW here. And you rly think GW2 will take players from WoW ?
SWTOR did not, and GW2 wont also. WoW playerbase is more complicated than regular MMO/social worlds and its very dedicated to blizz (which blizz take care of for a long time since d2/wc3 times)
I mean with ALOT of releases which we will observe in coming months/years GW2 wont sell good.
Iam just casual gamer who reads alot and participate quietly in MMO community for a long time and those are anly my predictions for future. I wanted to say sth cuz to many bullshitng/hypeshit is present on this forum.

do i think GW2 will have an impact on WoW, .. NO.. but will WoW have an effect on GW2.. that is a far more pertinent question, with the changes coming to WoW.. again.. GW2 may have a fight on its hands before it even launches, and thats before Tera and TSW hit the shelves..

im not voting cause I dont think it will sell that much. Its not that popular. most gamers havent heard of guild wars.

First month, 2 - 3 mil easily.
I dunno, but I think I would bet a little on it.

Over 4 million seperate accounts and 7 million boxes altogether? That is more than Diablo 2s 2,5 millions, a lot more....
It is nothing compared with Wow and the Sims, but it is still on the top 10 of most sold PC games ever so I am pretty sure you are wrong.
I personally think 2 million is about right in the first 3months.
Ain´t gonna happen, at least not for the launch. It might get ported in a year or 2 though.

The game is overHyped, just like SWTOR was.

It is all that MMOs are capable of.

Like Loke already said GW2 is the most anticipated mmo for many many years now.
My gues is that it will blow SWTOR sales out of the water.
If SWTOR have 2 millions players (or had) GW2 might double that amount on the pc alone.
Its all speculations at this point, but i have a feeling that this mmo might break many of the older records in no time.

I really wish people would stop saying that.
