"Sounds like the OP is part of the problem. Nice job pointing fingers at everyone but yourself.

"At least now OP you are helping the community by leaving."

"My thoughts exactly. Sadly, he will be back."

    etc. etc.

Bah, I've been a silent member of the mmorpg community since I saved all summer to get my first Tandy, and a 300 baud modem (which my dad chipped in half.  lol.)  I still think that might be the most expensive computer I have ever bought.  Some $2500.

I've probably played more games than half of you posters combined.

I can say I'm not part of the friggin "problem" though lol.  WTF.  Trust me, I'm the most passive gamer you'll ever meet.  I play, I absorb, and I contribute when asked.  I don't talk shit and make crap up like some of you just did.  And if you think I'm "helping the community by leaving" well let me tell you, I've tried all I could.   The only thing I've discovered while scraping away at the 40+ mmorpgs that I've played is that this genre is becoming a chore.

BUT, the point of this post is not for all you tight-wad bastards and fuck nut d-bags that I've had the "chore" of playing with over the last decade...  It's a manifesto to let maybe just a few of you know that, holy crap, there's some great single player games out there.

I know I'm not the only one.  I have two friends also that have been almost exclusivly mmorpgs/multi rts since the UO/EQ era.

We skipped the Civ's 4+, Deus Ex, HOM&M 4+, Total War series, Elder Scrolls, etc. etc.  Don't even get me started on games released after 2006.

And YES, missing out on all this shit was MY FAULT.  But god damn it sure is fun to pick these titles up.

The metaphysics of mmorpgs has gone ass backwards.  I got into the mmorpg genre cause it was an awesome entertainment option to define myself in an interactive way.  I hate to sound like a fucking marketing consultant, but it's true.  Mmorpg's allowed for that, while single player games didn't.

Well now the tides have turned.  Mmorpg's now feel like that horrible two hour wait at the amusement park when you were trying to get on the next big ride...  Surrounded by over-sexed teenagers and old people complaining about the heat all day.

The single player devs have really stepped up the notch.  I don't know if ti's the graphics or what, but a lot of these games are making me feel like I just learned how to free up all that RAM needed to get Hero's Quest 1 to work.

They are works of art again!  These games get my imagination working, that whole "one more turn", 16 hour all nighter that I haven't seen since UO, AC, Civ 3 or Wizardy 4-8 lol.  The gaming "crack" if you will.

I deal with 14 employees and people all day at work.  That's what mmorpg's feel like now.  Work.  Sometimes you have a great day and everything's good, most of the week though sombody is always bitching about something and being a total buzz kill.

This new breed of single player games (which probably isn't too new to any of you) is the most refreshing thing I've come across since not having to boot up my PC from the floppy drive to get a game to work.

     You are exactly right!

When MMO's start to feel like work it is time to check out some great single player games

I'm not THAT tired of MMO's, but I am sick and tired of Tolkien inspired fantasy. Enough with the elves and orcs already!

Amen to that. It would be nice with a gameworld close to "Game of thrones". Something low fantasy with little or no magic and focused on melee combat.

Nothing against Tolkien but it feels like 98% of all MMOs are using his world and Forgotten realms and just change the names a bit.

15 years later 80% of my everquest guild still talk to each other on the phone at least once a week, email or text each other almost every day, exchange xmas, and birthday cards, and presents, and get together any chance we get.

Few months ago we  had a guild reunion in the keys for a week, everyone pitched in and we rented 2 really nice vacation homes in Key West.

Lol we even trade kids for the summer sometimes, last summer my hubby and I took 6 of our guildies kids to Disney and Universal  for a week.

MMO communities aren't like that any more, no need for others, no team work, no trust or commitment to each other.

    Kinda sucks

I think it's a matter of the type of game, and the expectations placed upon it for progression/advancement.

I think there are some games that still have thriving communities, although they have grown smaller as the myriad of titles flooding the market tend to draw folks away out of their own misguided hopes that there is something new and interesting to love in a new game.  Sadly, this is why you see so many people talking about "clones" anymore, since most titles now "borrow" (translation: steal) so many of their ideas from the titles that had the best communities.

EQ was a great game to build a sense of community in.  So were UO and DAoC.  I followed some of my EQ guildies through several games before we finally parted ways in WoW.

I'd say I started seeing a shift toward more of a "selfish" vibe in the community when WoW became "popular".  I started seeing guildies that were more like close friends being cast off like so much rubbish when people became more "raid gear" oriented, and "server first" achievements became more important than years-long friendships, as our guild started recruiting the so-called "hardcore" element to further "progression".

    Sad times.

The great communities still exist the same way they always did, except now you find a guild a like-minded players rather than pretending the entire server was your guild.

Although is the OP is complaining of poor community while simultaneously calling us all a-holes? Way to be ironic.

    @loeslein

I just want to point out for a moment, that it feels like the OP is feeling a little self-righteous. I for one haven't really been playing MMORPGs for nearly a year now. League of Legends doesn't count, and I haven't been playing that religious either. I spend a lot of my time running my own business and working on my Masters Degree. I understand the flaws of MMORPGs, and especially their community and the new direction they've taken. I know when to stop and when to just linger about, waiting for something new to come around.

Yet, I do not see a reason to go around delcaring this action. A lot of gamers are like myself, and normally we don't feel like we have to announce our own opinions because we do it in another way --- not playing. As much as I yearn for a good game, I've come to terms with that most of what I loved 6 years ago is long dead and gone. Best I can do is get on with my life and make myself productive until something deserving of my time rears its head. 2012 seems like it may be a promising year, but I'm not going to make any gamble.

I'm dissapointed at the OP's attitude.

Seriously agree with this. I became such good friends with guildmates in EQ1 that they came from Europe to the US to visit me. We still talk all the time, and soon I am going to go visit them. This was a real community, and it built *real* friendships.

I had it to a lesser degree in WoW, in the beginning, but no game since. People solo, trying not to group as much as humanly possible, and when they do group, they don't talk. I still make friends in games where I guild, but it's definitely not like it was in the past.

You can never go back it seems, which sucks....

  • tom_goretom_gore Member UncommonPosts: 2,001

OP, have fun. It's healthy to take a break from MMOs every now and then. After 6-12 months, you'll be back. See ya then!

  • SanguinelustSanguinelust Member UncommonPosts: 812

While I agree with most of what the OP says, I'm not giving up on MMO's, I just play them less... a lot less. I find I tend to try to play them mostly solo more and more and just skip most of the group content until endgame. If I find people that I can get along with then I'll play with them as much as possible but for the most part I'm a mmo hermit.

  • TROLL_HARDTROLL_HARD Member Posts: 312

Can never go wrong with MORROWIND.

Will have to check out that mod.

But it gets lonely playing single-player games. Good luck OP.

Yeah, I have a feeling I'm going to get lucky and stumble upon a good group of folks eventually, but the trick is finding the game we'll all be content with--- alas, that's the main reason for my comment about so many choices.

Agreed about the OP, but it's nice to see that so many community-oriented people have replied, even if to mildly berate the OP for his/her hypocrisy.  Gives me hope that some of us may eventually meet up at some point, in some decent triple-A title down the road.

I've never missed a single player game that I wanted to play in all the years I've been involved in MMOs.  Perhaps the failure here is the OPs ability to prioritize.

  • ProfRedProfRed Member UncommonPosts: 3,495

Peace~  You should have been mixing single player games in all along.  I have been playing/chasing MMO's for over a decade too, and sadly most don't hold me more than a month anymore because they are just boring and poorly designed.  That doesn't mean you can't linger around and be here when a good one finally hits.  All things in moderation my friend.

  • DistopiaDistopia Member EpicPosts: 21,183

I don't take the OP's words to heart because I'm not like that in games, his A-hole comment seemed to be aimed at the A-holes he's met, not the entire community. It's no surprise many still take offense and play victim though.

Either way he's right the communities in these games have become toxic as have the little communities like this or on other forums. Too many people trying to be E-hardasses and leet-dudes. Half the time the discussion looks like the chat in a FPS, or console game.

This all started when they started maken carebear games.. they all need to go back to old school UO ! :P that way we can just pk and kill horse/drobe em till they quit.. there i solved all mmos problems.. without carebear all the weak would be deleted from mmos :)

Funny, one of the reasons I look for MMOs to play is because single player games today suck so bad to me.

To each his own I guess. Still, I doubt OP's 'tude (...lol I said 'tude) helped his situation any.

It's funny how a lot of you guys are reacting to this post in exactly the manner that has driven him away from mmorpg's.

All of you weirdo's ragging on him don't even realize you're part of the people he's talking about.

Once mainstream society gets hold of something it's only a matter of time before they devour it in their complete narcissism (the reason there is so much 'u suck!', 'lol i'm trolling you cuz you suck', 'my opinion is universal reality', 'I don't care as long as im happy', 'this game exists just so i can be an a**hole to people 24 hours a day' etc. etc.).

Did you know that narcissism is so common in modern society that it cannot be classified as a mental condition anymore? It is part of the accepted 'normal' state of mind at this point. Think about that.

Posts like the OP basically serve those trolls they so despise.  Shows them that they got under someone's skin.

Enjoy your trip back to SPG's, OP.  For now, I'll be sticking to the least antisocial genre of PC games there is.  Cuz these days, even the best SPG's feel to me like they're missing something.

Hear, hear OP, once i started taking my traffic to another site i like to pop back in here once ans awhile for a reminder of why i took my traffic elsewhere. Most of the type you talk about come here for some reason? Hey there are many great posters here as well so don't think I'm talking about you, the problem with the type the OP is taking about is they will think they are in your group.

I re-subbed swtor and am loving it mostly due to it being a single player game with a monthly fee i suppose. (Oppps, oh yeah you don't get banned for that anymore) I crack a couple jokes back int he day and got banned for it, so you know what, bye mmorpg you're banned from my traffic.

I've never left single player i enjoy both genres equally but one thing for sure is, allot of mmorpg players are...
