When I first got a mount in WoW it was the best thing that could ever happen to me because it finally meant I could stop walking everywhere. I never liked walking anywhere (in this game) because the return trip from any adventure would mostly be boring. Eventually I stopped looking at the zones and just sped everywhere on my flying mount. Not caring about the environments I fought in. I also hated the gryphon bus.

Gw1 doesn't have mounts and this was what I was used to for years. Gw1 map travel system really does eliminate the need for mounts. When I really wanted to explore I could do so easily because I could just warp back to a place that was kinda close to it. Just the other day I had to go to some obscure part of the map to complete a post end game quest. It took me a good 20 minutes to get to this place and it was mostly through one of the larger zones. At the end of my journey I simply warped back to figure out my next task. Less than 4 seconds of return travel.

Reimagining that same journey in WoW is just not possible. I would have had to either fly back to the place or wait for my magic stone to cooldown or spend the same amount of time retracing my steps.

Well, if mounts are simply a way to skip content, then warping is a way to uber-skip content.  In Skyrim for instance, warping means you miss half the game...

The difference is that I can skip the content by choice. In WoW I would have been forced to make certain choices. Do I use my hearth? Should I save my hearth and spend time going back through a place I've just explored?

Skyrim is a good example of skipping content by choice. You were never really forced to map travel. You could walk back for adventure if you so choose. I know I walked back for the sake of adventure. WoW would not have given you that choice. If you had no hearth you would have to find a gryphon bus and afk until it got to your destination. I do not enjoy my game time being wasted because of meaningless travel.

Imagine if you will that teleporting had a 30 min cooldown in skyrim. Would you have enjoyed it more or be annoyed that such an arbitrary mechanic was put in place to make the game seem longer.

Well, in my opinion the solution is to make the traveling interesting, not eliminate the traveling.  And make it so you don't need to travel the same ground over and over and over again.  It is much harder to pull off though so that is why pretty much all games like this allow a fast travel option.

I wish they didn't though and took the time to craft interesting experiences along the way.  Anything immersion breaking I don't like, but I guess the reality is no game is deep or interesting enough to pull it off yet...

    Keywords: not yet XD

I think one problem is that exploring really only has two states. Explored and unexplored. Once you find a place the feeling is lost forever. The path you take to get to the place doesn't really change. Unless the secret area gets up and moves (Now there's an interesting idea.) there isn't much point to walking to the same place twice.

Gawd that's a tough question. Can anyone think of an idea to make travelling to the same place twice more interesting?

Im thinking cities on the backs of giant animals XD

The difference bewteen supporting the game and buying vanity stuff and buying stuff that gives You any kind of advantage in Pve or PvP environment is pretty huge.

Person buying minipet, costume, new hairstyle, etc - that's fine and that's the way companies can look for support.

Person buying a WvW mount to move around map at faster speed (especially for 20$) - is Pay2Win case and deserves to be hunted down for supporting abusive business practice.

A mount in a game where mounts are obsolete IS purely cosmetic. Sorry to burst your little bubble.

    Bren

Did he said it's only cosmetic? No. Did he said that the mount will offer no advantage? No. More so, he stated specifically "in mists". If it's pure cosmetics, sure do whatever You want, but it, don't buy it, if it affect no one it's fine. His post however was rather clear attempt to make cash shop look like the "evil place where people buy power".

And my bubble is fine, thanks for asking. It says "Hi".

It doesn't matter what he said when the reality of the situation is obvious. With fast travel to almost anywhere a mount is actually a disadvantage not a boon. They would only be to show off your ePreen points and nothing more. Purely cosmetic fluff.

But walking around travelling in GW2 IS an interesting experience. Teleporting around is a convinience system and when you are exploring around the world you dont need to use it since there are events going around all the time. Its just for when you gota meet up with friends or go to places fast when you got not much time.

But in the mists that isn't the case, sure they will insist it is as you are now but would anyone playing now like to confirm that having amount in mists right now would not be an advantage of any kind?

I just want to throw this out there.

Fast travel in GW2 is almost exactly the same as using a hearthstone and then a series of flight paths in WoW. The only differences are that you and your friends don't have to find something else to do while you wait, it doesn't have a timer, and (best of all) it can't be used during combat.

You can check the density of waypoints in the recent beta videos. They thinned them out significantly since the demos. They're about as common as flight paths in WoW.

Agreed, but flying mounts and similar things kills travelling as much as fast travel.

The real reason GW2 have it however is so that it will be easier for players to team up. Any old mmo player can tell you that it was kinda annoying to get a group together in the early game when the people you whispered might need 8 hours just to get to the dungeon you need another good player for.

ANET have been working on mounts, Jeff Grubbh said so in several interviews but it seems like they wont be in from launch, who knows when they patch them in... But long travelling kinda goes against the games core principle. it is made so casual gamers can play it as well.

There were really many things I liked with long travelling and i will try to avoid fast travel if at all possible but I will still use it when I need to meet up with guildies and friends. And old style travelling is something you either must have strictly (any teleporting kills of the thing totally) or not at all.

I don´t mind playing a game like that, I have in the past but map travel works for this game.

I personally feel that instant travel should be a convenience we choose to use at a price. Most of the time, traveling on foot or on a mount is perfectly fine. It lets you enjoy the beautiful world the devs worked so hard on. Instant travel signifies efficiency. Efficiency should be a word used during a job. Not in a video game. Is playing Guild Wars 2 a job? I hope not.

Fats travel/teleporting is the best travel possible. You dont have time, you want to reach the destination fast, your group w8ing for you - dang you are there in no time.

You want to RP, yo have all day long and want to enjoy the view, you like to explore - there you go, you just dont use the travel system.

Its so extreamly simple and understandable, I'm confused why people dont get it?! mhm I have an answer, but most of you wont like it ;)
