All these people, and All that money. And yet. We still only have like 10 good mmos. Reminds me of SWTOR. You just ask, what happened? Though I do look forward to the future, some interesting mmos in development.
10 is a large enough number since i can't really play more than a few at the same time.
TOR? It sold 2M and has 1.7M subs after 30 days .. so the jury is still out.
FarmVille community surpasses 80 million players
Sure, and it is a highly successful game. Do you have revenue number to share since it is F2P? Typical F2P MMOs have less than 1% of the player pays. If you use that conversion, it has the equivalent of ~0.8-1M paying customers. Aroudn the same order of magnitude as TOR.
And there is no conflict that there are several successful games out there.

Very nice. The company generates ~1B in 2012. That is not JUST farmville though .. it includes all the games .. cityville, farmvilles.
However, that is WOW numbers with a F2P game. This really says a lot about F2P, and very consistent with the newszoo report (though farmville/cityville are not counted as MMO in that report) that F2P is growing a lot.
Action adventures that are carrying the name MMO are increasing.
True MMOs no longer exist in NA; games have to be dumbed down to much to make big sales over here.
You are not the authority on MMOs.
I will use newszoo definition (which is the market research authority on the subject) than some random guy on the internet. Plus, IGN, Gamespot, metacritics, gamerankings do not agree with you on what an MMO is.

Believe me,it doesnt matter if its F2P or TOR or revenue, you only need to know how many people are playing it. Ask from yourself "is those really " MMORPGs" , take some history lessons about role playing games ,LARP, if you cant figure that out.
Then ponder hard, is these todays MMORPGs really RPGs.
If someone says that Justin Biere is MMORPG,then he would be the most best successful MMORPG in this planet, with your logic.
thats why this genre is declining, these things out there right now are pretty far from RPG´s.

I dont need history lessons. I was there with the first computer RPGs. My first is Ultima 3. I played might & magic, the first gold box AD&D and so on ...
But i disgress.
Genres ALWAYS evolves and changes. The original gold box games are heavy in tactical combat, with story elements you need to read from a separate book . It is not until MUCH later than story and dialogue has become more important in CRPGs.
And Diablo .. which is called a ACTION rpg .. re-focus back on the combat & progerssion elements.
So what if the MMORPG genre evolves and become more combat focus (similar to Diablo), and more quest/story focus (like BG, other successful bioware RPGs (don't tell me KOTOR is not a RPG).

Well, as the population increases, so does the number of potential MMO players. Also, with kids having more access to computers/media devices, they're playing MMOs at a younger age.
The days where you'd play man hunt outside for 10 hours a day are almost gone. A new era of computer tanned nerds has begun.
Would anyone happen to know or have access to, or maybe compile, the actual AAA MMO population numbers?
For example, this entire discussion can be put to rest if we knew a monthly population count of WoW, Eve, Rift, SWTOR, LOTRO, Aion, CoH, FFXI, EQ2, DCUO... put them on a graph, show the year they came out and their pop's through the months.
I mean, if one game comes out while the other games barely lose their subs, then we know a bunch of new people have just entered the MMO market (even after subtracting the estimated "people who sub multiple games" crowd.)
Or perhaps compare the release of WoW cataclysm with teh release of Rift and SWTOR, and see if the numbers are getting bigger for each AAA MMO release, that will also reveal new players entering the market.
Or we could sit here and argue about who's dick is bigger all day... (mine is)
so what people consider MMO players nowadays are....facebook chimps clicking a button in a browser game
yeah, now I can see the MMO market is amazingly strong....
Any market that have 47+M customers, and billions dollars is amazingly strong .. so yeah, you are right.
calling that kind of people MMO players is about the same as calling everyone who ever wore trainers and occasionaly went out for a walk a sportsman
hey look, the sport industry is super strong, 7 billion professional athletes worldwide!
I work in the sport industry. The industy consists of far far far more than professional athletes. The sport industry considers everyone who engages in professional sports, recreational sports (a little or a lot) and even those who are thinking about become more active.
So yes the sport is industy is super strong with hundreds of millions possibly billions around the world.
Not too mention all the side aspects of it - sales of gear, media, food, drink, therapists, mental and physical (that would be my position), doctors, coaches...
So to me if someone plays an online game with significant other people (a few hundred seems to be what is needed to surpass co-op or multiplayer online games) then they are an MMO player. The game doesn't need to be of the same type of caliber as UO, Eve or Wow. It just needs a continuous online connection with several hundred people you CAN, NOT WILL interact with.
Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.
I work in the sport industry. The industy consists of far far far more than professional athletes. The sport industry considers everyone who engages in professional sports, recreational sports (a little or a lot) and even those who are thinking about become more active.

facebook chimps and zynga zombies are not MMO players.

As more and more MMOs flood the market my hope is that the bigger companies will try to encompass as many player types as possible. We're seeing sandbox/themepark hybrids. We have seen games where solo and group content share the same areas.
It would nice to choose a game for it's IP, story and artstlye rather than need to choose game X because it's the only one with the gameplay I like.
The MMO market today is mirroring in many aspects the Video game market of 1983. I mean people will never get tired of a pac-man (or WoW) clone right? lets just follow a proven formula and cash in. Nothing will ever happen right?
I'm just waiting for the MMO industries version of ET to bring some sense back into some of the publishers that that the homoginization of the genre into what it has become isn't innovation & will be the death of the genre..
Or maybe we already have the industries"ET" (an IP so big that it can't lose) but ill give it a few months before I make that call.

It would nice to choose a game for it's IP, story and artstlye rather than need to choose game X because it's the only one with the gameplay I like.
Just not worth my time anymore.
