Im trying to figure out what i am farming in this game, if levels are designed to take 90 minutes each, which will probably mean about 30mnutes for me, and gear is supposed to be all uniform across levels just unique looks what am i farming for power?
Are skills still unlocked through quests and stuff? it seems as though all the weapon skills are given to you as you use the weapon as such i am not quite sure what the guild wars 2 end game is, is it just pvp?

Fun and enjoyment
Fun for alot of people, i think ill enjoy the pve just by playing it.
Pvp is my main carrot though.
For me it will be having fun.. thats the only carrot I've ever chased while playing games.

fun
I enjoy exploring, playing with teams without having to worry about loot or kill steals, and fair pvp.
To answer ur question, the utility skills are unlocked by completing skill challenges.
oh, and u play because its fun

Fun for me as well, without the the worry of gear/stat/ilvl to make sure I can have said fun.
Yeh I didn't understand this at first because I like to farm and progress my character and make it more powerful, but I guess GW2 is making it so that your character doesnt gain power through farming it gains power through the player learning how to skillfully use that character.
I find farming for stuff to be fun, i find completing goals adn tasks to be fun, i still havent seen a response on what there will be to do at end game beyond pvp.

I wouldn't go that far, but I think there are some pvp affecting issues they need to consider. And maybe a limit on how many diamonds a player can buy each month.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

Yup, probable 10-15 euro per month, what a huge amount of money, haha!
My advice, get a job or play other games. If you cant afford 10-15 euro per month, do not play games at all and go find a job.
GW2 is for the extremely poor who can't afford to pay a monthly subscription...
We play these games for fun...just...have...fun.
Well, then you are not very well informed
You will have daily achievments, weekly (?) achievments monthly and yearly. Just to name me a few
"I am not a robot. I am a unicorn."
To be honest if you dont enjoy goeing back to old content to help guildie etc or do dungeons there aint much left for you.
Dunno how many dungeons they have or how rapid they will produce it but i find it hard to belive this game will sustain raiders.
There might be someone else that has some ideas but im blank
Edit : miss read that post sorry but will leave incase someone wonders about raids.
I think there will be rare items to farm for like gw1 like those ice weapons very very few had in the start
but im unsure of this

I also consider myself a goal oriented player. I think you'll find you can gain a sense of achievement from various things like:
1.) Being the best Server/Guild at WvW
2.) Beating the toughest Dynamic events
3.) Attaining gear from the hardest dungeons
4.) Completing SP Campaign
While the latter two don't make you better than the next guy, they are achievements which you would hope distinguish you from the crowd. That is pretty much the crux of MMOs...being able to distinguish yourself.
Oh and ofcourse theres the fun aspect too.

The fact that this question is even being asked shows how much damage has been done to the idea of MMORPG's.
My answer is fun as well.
BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.
There is also crafting if farming mats is what you like. lol
'Farming' can mean different things to different people, don't know if you meant raiding.
End game is just PVP and farming appearance gear in PVE .
The carrot you speak of is the entire game.

You play GW2 for fun. I know that sounds wierd to many MMORPG players, but that's the main motivation, Fun.
There are achievments to earn, skills to unlock, personal goals to achieve. Even though the power curve for gear is much more shallow than other games, there is variety of stats and some quality differentiation. Don't underestimate the value of rare armor skins. There is a vast variety of armor skins for the game and many people do care about collecting armor for it's appearance, either to suit personal taste or to show off rare items for the prestige factor.
There are things to earn in the game, but earning these things isn't the main motivation for playing the game, you play to have fun!
(BTW, one cool thing about GW2 game design and the way you scale down for content, while earning XP and loot appropriate for you true evel, is that it doesn't matter whether you are a fast leveler, or a slow leveler, this game is for you. Some can look at leveling as just something that happens as you play the game, take your time and have fun. Or, you can level as fast as possible, with the knowledge that you never "outlevel" content or put yourself out of sync with friends or guildmates who level at a more casual pace. The most important shift of perspective required by the game is to understand that the entire game is "end game", rather than 95% of the game just being something you have to navigate to reach "end game", so you can do something completely different than what you did while leveling up).

I guess my carrot is completion. Obtaining titles and trophies and the like.
