Tera, Tera, I must go home to Tera, Gone with the MMO

eddieg50eddieg50 Member UncommonPosts: 1,809

After playing the closed beta I must say "will someone take me home to SWTOR", Tera is like all the other asian grinders ,especially Perfect World. Now if you like Perfect World that is fine but I guess I have been spoiled by SWTOR,  What Have You Done To Me SWTOR You Have Ruined Me For Other Games!!!!.   I never used to mind reading the WALL of Text, now I have hit the Wall!!!. My eyes were ready to explode out of my head after reading what Tera thinks is a good story, lets see "kill the jerkabees"  "get five hides of of MOO moons" etc, etc.  I had read about this exciting combat but did not see or experience it---combo's you call that combo's you want combo's go play AOC you will get decent combo's or even eq2.

We have seen this all before , pretty graphics and the usual wall of text with bad quests mixed in with blah crafting and the usual PvP.   "Those damn Yankees are destroying our mmo's, wait I see a shining light with a brilliant story line, take me back to SWTOR, please take me back to SWTOR"    "Tera, Tera, what will become of Tera"  "Frankly my dear I dont give a damn!"

TERA never claimed they were going to have anything new like quests/story ETC. The only thing they did differently is the combat system. That is thier claim to fame and the BAMS. I am going to guess you probably didn't even get past level 8 or off the starter island. Obviously if you are going to go back to SWTOR this game was too hard for you. Have fun watching your quest movies.

  • You're confused, TERA is not a grind at all.

Yes Whiskey I am able to multi task, I can enjoy a game and still play and enjoy another game - well whoda thunk- I will get back on my server and enjoy my solo play mixed with small grouping (is there any other grouping that is more enjoyable) I will strike out with my companion(best companion play) to fight the evil in the force and thank heavan I wont have to read that horrendous wall of text and like most of you space bar in about 2 words in so I can race to the end game and just do raiding over and over and over and over and over

^ pretty much what i'm going to say.

And eddieg by calling it asian grinders its pretty obvious you didn't even play the game at all. Because the lvl speed is pretty close to rift/WoW/swtor, there isn't much lvling grinding at all when you can hit 30+ in 24hrs which is like half way through the game. Also last i heard swtor only had quest it had nothing else so that haveing even the usual PvP automaticly make Tera better than swtor in my book.

Well frankly i don't give a damn about SWTOR too ^_^ glad you don't like probablly less people like you the better for the game =D

If you consider Tera's combat mechanics to be innovative, then you didn't experience it before when it was introduced in SWG by the NGE.  When people complain that the NGE sucked, because of the combat mechanics.  Tera uses the same combat mechanics system implemented in SWG NGE.  I'm sure the intent was not to copy SWG NGE combat, but copy it they did.  No I am not saying that anyone reverse engineered the NGE.  What I am saying is that on their own what they developed and put together through trial and error resulted in a combat mechanics system that reproduces the look and feel to within 90% if not 99.99% of the NGE.  I feel certain that it was not the intent or goal of anyone to reproduce the NGE.  But None the Less, what was independently put together looks, feels, and tastes like the NGE to me.

Interesting. Never got a chance to play SWG NGE. So in NGE movement was controlled by the mouse (No WASD) and combat was the mouse buttons?  I really did think TERA/dragons nest did it first :-)

The combat system did not seem that new to me, maybe because I played a Lancer and perhaps that does not have complex combos til later (I played til lvl 12 then I could not take it anymore), to say the game was to hard for me makes you sound a bit silly , and yes I will have fun and have allready had great fun watching my quest movies (I also have a subscription to NetFlix, is that bad also?) The story line and the voice overs, cut scenes, great sound are what make SWTOR great. I dont blame you for being angry, if I spent 60 on a game and hated it I would be a little pissed LOL.

As far as the grind goes, yes you are right it is not a slow grinder lets say in the tradition of liniage or aion but it still feels like a kill this , kill that type of grinder to me anyway.  You like Tera better and that is ok, I like story and great movies (why I used Gone with the Wind in my comment) good acting, cut scenes and superior sound (I have a sound card and SWTOR kills tera for sound) add the companion, small groups and it is terrific to me, I am so tired of these mmo's with no story and no plot. I would not watch a movie with a bad plot or story or read a book with such, why would I play a game like that?

Never said it was good or bad but simply stating there isn't a lvl grind like most asian grinder where it takes some time almost a year to reach lvl cap. I personally wish it was slower, i love lvl to mean something, i want to be capped to mean something but most western player dislike that. They like game to focus more on end game content rather than the way to cap.

Lancer has some nice stuff later on. A shield bash when you successfully block, a nice "charge" type of move where you hunker down and just march straight through, and I love fighting the BAMS with them. I did several today, just me and a mystic, took some time but at the end of it I said that I felt like i was on Mutual of Omaha's wild kingdone (probably an esoteric reference but there it is).

The game can really feel like what I've seen of Monster hunter. Espeically the BAM's that do more than just lumber and try to hit you.

But you know, to each his/her own.

Whatever man. I'm a known pvp and raid "A-team" member on my SWTOR server and I immediately canceled my subscription from renewal after my first TERA closed beta taste. After the most recent one (second), I haven't logged into SWTOR for the last four days. And I probably won't for a week. If it weren't for the friends I made in SWTOR, I wouldn't even go back. What's there to do at 50 besides Dailies, PVP warzone, Central Ilum, and raids? They're all repetitive. There's no "voice acting" to appreciate since you've heard all of the conversation ad nauseum. Granted the storytelling is good, but it's like having eight KOTORs rolled into one.

What I always say is, it's the "small things" like the most  basic buidling blocks of game mechanics that really can stand the test of time. Games like Castlevania and Super Mario, fighting games in general, even Chess have simple mechanics that worked and people can enjoy them over and over because of possible permutations. TERA's combat mechanic is similar in this regard. Games with "gimmicks" like GW2's dynamic world event or SWTOR's voice storytelling is neat but has an expiration date when you've seen this and done that.

So, just to clarify, GW2's dynamic events and TOR's voice storytelling are nothing but gimmicks, but Tera's combat, which has been the most lauded feature of Tera, is NOT a gimmick, rather something that will stand the test of time despite the rather generic questing and gameplay?

    Makes perfect sense.  Or not.

In your opinion maybe.  I think the redefining of questing (ie: GW2) is much less of a gimmick than TOR's full VO.  It's just as important as combat to some people, moreso to others.  Fully GW2 fangirl based post, but something that needed to be said about the obvious differences here.
