The central issue is that major depression (contemplating suicide) is extremely serious. Mittani confused real life with a game. He encouraged his thousands of followers to push that person to suicide.

    Mittani must go.

I feel compassion for the Mittani because he has made his real name and appearance public. I suspect he will have to change his real name, because if any prospective employer Googles his name, I doubt they would want to employ him.

So it is in the Mittani's best interests to leave Eve and put the whole thing behind him.

Of course you just violated one yourself so it's a good thing you don't play the game and this isn't CCP's property.

Depends on if it's a real person or just him and his friend. Also I'm quite sure he stated the ingame name of the player not real one.

He gave the character's name and then gave personal real life information about the player.  Yeah... The rules are vague for a reason.

At what time? I just rewatched it and he only said the username at that point.

Around the time when he gives out personal information about the other player's private life or did you think that personal information is only the person's real name and where they live?  It's also that, but it's so many other things too, it covers everything about the person at the keyboard and nothing about the person's toon floating around in space.

"Lectroids? Planet 10? Nuclear extortion? A girl named "John"?

Here in the UK, cyberbullies are considered to be beneath contempt. There have been several stories in the press where young people have committed suicide. And those circumstances were arguably milder. The Mittani encouraged hundreds of people to bully one person. If just one or two do that... well, it just doesn't bear thinking about.

But I found out really fast. There is a corp there (At the time anyway) called Menace to society. They were Goonswarm rejects. They were trying to emulate Goonswarm in this new EVE Clone.

Before I could be admitted to the corp, I had to log into Vent and wait for an interview.

    The interview consisted of :

He should have all of his items and wealth on his character confiscated and distributed to his subordinates in game, then they should ban his character and ban him from creating any new accounts in EVE.  That would send a clear message that CPP cares about the in-game losers as much as the in-game winners.

I am betting right this very moment he's "sheltering" his wealth among those he trusts.

Should he get banned, H'ell just come back as a "noob"

Like GS never did that beofre

Here's the thing. I can see CCP banning this guy to curb a PR disaster.

Once they can say "we perma-banned him" they can say they did what they could.

If he comes back under an alias, CCP won't care they can feign ignrance.

I am not sure if there are laws that can apply to him in regards to Cyber bullying. I can only hope there is.

That would be poetic if he's brought up on charges.

And even if it's a hoax, which I must say, in all likelyhood, it probably is.

He went too far to ecourage that type of behavior in public as acceptable even if the victim was fictional.

I can tell you that this is not the first time this has happened in EVE Online, but usually it's on a much smaller scale. A large part of the EVE community are simply there because their behavior is not tolerated elsewhere.

My sister of 13 years old loves Star Wars and Star Trek. She's a bit of tomboy, so one day when she saw me playing EVE, she wanted to try. She started a toon and played for a couple of months - we made a corp together just so her and I could play while I was deployed in Iraq. Well some pirate tried to flip my can and I didn't fall for it, I also told her to be careful of that trick. He got mad and started saying nasty things to us. I asked him to please stop because my sister was only 13 years old, and he started saying it more, calling her a "c-nt" and a "sl-t" and telling her to ... you get the picture. We blocked him but he made new characters.

I reported him to CCP. After a week we got no reply to our petition. We wardecced us and sent me a message calling me a crybaby and taddle tale. CCP never replied to our petition, but apparently someone at CCP told him about it. What ensued was 3 weeks that we could not play the game because she was only 1 month old and he was flying T2 ships with 10 other people. I petitioned CCP again about the harassment and they completely glossed over it and gave me a stock "wardeccing is a valid game mechanic".

Our issue never got resolved until 1.5 months when he got bored and left us alone. CCP never punished or did anything to this player - CCP took his side and enabled him to harass us and sexually harass my sister.

This sort of thing is commonplace in EVE, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Now that EVE is becoming more popular, CCP is finally started to see what it's like to run a legitimate gaming business. EVE has a bad enough reputation as it is, and CCP is doing what it can to tweak game mechanics to make it more "user friendly". This Mittani thing couldn't have come at a worse time for CCP. I don't know how that guy ever became CSM - he is obviously not a good person and Goons only exist, admittedly, to harass and harm other players. CCP is just going to have to change the schtick or watch their subscription numbers dwindle even more than it already has been.

Recorded information about an identifiable individual that may include his or her (1) name, address, email address, phone number, (2) race, nationality, ethnicity, origin, color, religious or political beliefs or associations, (3) age, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, family status, (4) identifying number, code, symbol, (5) finger prints, blood type, inherited characteristics, (6) health care history including information on physical/mental disability, (7) educational, financial, criminal, employment history, (8) others' opinion about the individual, and (9) personal views except those about other individuals.

The mitanni has made a public appology to go on the forums

    #1 Posted: 2012.03.27 00:09

This has been hanging over my head since Thursday when I stumbled away from the Alliance Panel with a vague sense that I had done something horrible. I didn't know the extent of how much of a shitheel I had been until today, when footage of the presentation went up. As many of you now know, I gave out the in-game character name of a Mackinaw miner if anyone had wanted to blow him up - except that I was so smashed that I didn't recall exactly what I said (as anyone who was there can tell you). When I came to the forums the other day and saw threads complaining about my behavior - not remembering what I'd said - I assumed that I was enduring the usual anti-Goonswarm trolls, and posted something like "deal with it~" in my usual "The Mittani" way.

Then I landed, and saw the article listing my actual quote.

    Christ.

I feel absolutely ashamed of my behavior at the Alliance Panel. It's one thing to play a villain in an online roleplaying game - when I post on these forums or on twitter, I usually do so as 'The Mittani', and do my level best to convince everyone that I'm an unrepentant space villain, as that kind of facade provides an in-game advantage to me and my alliance. But I am not that character in real life, as anyone who has met me can attest. I went way, way, /way/ past the line on Thursday night by mocking the Mackinaw miner at a real-life event. I, as a person, am not the entity that I play in EVE; I am not actually a sociopath or a sadist, and I certainly don't want people to kill themselves in real life over an internet spaceship game, no matter what I may say or do within the game itself. CCP may say 'EVE is Real', but EVE is not real - and the line between the game and reality should not be overstepped.

I'm relieved to discover that the Mackinaw miner is doing fine and mining away, despite being blown up by Goonswarm in-game. He deserves, and he has, my heartfelt apologies - here in public as well as a private apology. There's no excuse for what I did - while some might try to use my inebriation as a mitigating factor, I put myself in that compromised mental state, and the guilt of that is entirely mine.

If I could go back in time and not have included the slide mentioning the miner, I would do so. While the Eve Online character "The Mittani" would never apologize for any sort of villany in game, I myself, as Alex Gianturco, feel utterly ashamed and sickened by my behavior.

Please remember this is the goons so take this with a whole salt shakers worth of salt as to weather it is serious/meaningful or not.

It's not common, hardly even in comparison to other games. The only thing is that EVE players generally tend to play the game a bit harder than others by trying to really crush the ones they can ingame. Out of game? No, not so much. He even posted an apology.

Myself I haven't found a bad player in EVE yet, I got killed when I was at war but thats how the game works. Who said games are supposed to be risk free? Its only MMORPGs nowadays that are pathetic in the sense that there is not much GAME left.

If something can happen it usually will. That in no way should be the reason why someone takes extreme measure OUTSIDE OF GAME. If people are that emotionally invested (on both sides) then they should not be playing THAT game.

you might say that as long as "whatever happens in EVE, stays in EVE" holds true, sure. few people in EVE care if you lose a ship, ISK, cargo, skill points, you name it. it's part of the game. people will offer both advice and laugh at you, sometimes at the same time.

but when someone threatens will RL harm, it's entirely different story. people have been banned for this. anyone that doesn't get importance of separating in-game and out-of-game should be put in place.
