My question is inspired by the whole cash shop discussion but seperate from it. No one talked about winning in GW2 before all this. And now the subject is there, and I am trying to figure out or come to a consensus on what constitutes winning in this game.
In Pay to Win games, I know what winning is. Runes of magic was pay to win. You needed to buy these gems to make your armor. I was a tank, needed the best armor to do the best dungeons. I knew I won when i was ranked as having the top 10 armor in the game. It sucked from a play point of view. You really had to pay to get this armor. Runes of magic was built around the concept on having thebest gear, I knew how to win. IN rift, you can't do all the content without having tier 3 armor. So winning means having tier 3 armor, which means playing a while.
If Guild Wars 2 has a win condition. What is that win condition. Whether you have gold, cash gems or whatever, if you can win the game, what does that mean to you?
In the cash shop discussions, a lto of folk talk about playing to win. I don't care about your opinion on the cash shop, I do want to know what do you think winning means in Guild Wars 2. How do you win.
Heh , how to give you a non flame anwser? Is there any MMO out there where you can "win"? It's like driving on the high way and passing everyone along your ride home and say you finished first , but there were still about a million cars ahead of you. There is no logical explanation or anwser to your question. One does not simply "win" a MMO.
For PVE your goal is very personal. Different people will aim for different things in MMO PVE. While the OP was going for max armour on gear in RoM, someone else maybe just wanted to beat certain content. Maybe even beat the toughest content with as less armour on gear. You can set your own challenge.
While GW2 will not be gearbased like most other MMO's there is still a lot of room to set your own goals. There will be armourset looks that are only obtainable from difficult dungeons I expect. Then there is the explorable version of dungeons themselves. You can try to beat those with less players. 3 Or 4 instead of full team of 5 etc.
Just never assume that some other player has set the same goals for him/her self. Which can mean that your boasting about some personal achievement in PVE , can be utterly meaningless to someone else.
The cash shop detractors haven't really thought that part through. They'll get back to you.
I've seen examples, like how they feel in a round about way it effects keep defense and siege tools. Of course I know the counter argument as well in terms of supply. In the end the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle like most cases where people have chosen sides. Some feel XP pots and the like are a form of P2W, which is completely subjective, as it's an opinion, and in a game sense it makes sense, in that short cuts have always been considered cheating to some.
So in the the end the answer for the Op is a simple it depends on the eyes of the beholder, as well as how things actually turn out..

You win by accompishing the goals you set for yourself. Regardless of anyone elses opinion or thoughts on what you should be doing. It's up to you do determine what your successes are or will be. That goes for any MMO. I myself usually am satisfied by getting to max level then puttering around.. I'm not a raid-whore or a loot-junkie, so I dont need those to 'win' in my games.
Addition to the leaked cash shop I posted, found in the very same thread :
Anet have stated that there is no item in the store that cannot be replicated in game, so mystic keys will be drops in addition to items in shop.
So basically, anyone who is ranting about the cash shop just lacks information (and should be slapped in the face for ranting without knowing).
Have a link to the actual quote? AS in Anet actually saying it?
No offense, but I'm kind of bored to systematically have to search the links again whenever I try to bring an argument. This time you'll have to use Google yourself, bro

This is what I could find, he's basically saying everything is tradable, so in a sense the above is correct. HE does say "basically", which is something to note. The last sentence is what is most important, none of it is finalized.

Also - we can't talk about something that isn't finalised yet, as Mike mentioned right in the beginning.

Why are you people so picky ?
Who cares seriously ? Who cares if Joe Shmup got +10% karma than you for 1 hour ? 660 Karma instead of 600 ? xD
Does it really prevent people from exploring the whole game ? getting better at their fighting skills ? pvp ? combo classes ? pve ? If some people still find such cash shop deals as a buystopper, I'd say they weren't interested in playing the game enough from the start.
If it was yet another WoW clone with no new mechanics, I'd understand, but here I guess we still have plenty of ways to shine ingame without relying on the cash shop. The real people who will shine in GW2 won't be those with that 400 gems mini pet, they will be this group of hardcore gamers with insane coordination skills. Trust me.

I didn't make a statement toward any standpoint on this issue, only acknowledged where people may stand, I don't care about the cash-shop in anyway, which I've said a thousand times.

I plan on playing whatever class I choose very well and have as much fun as possible everytime I log in. That's how I'm going to win, I don't know how everybody else plans to...
I think the OP's question is asking how to be successful, rather than "how to win". In other games, such as AoC, factors such as gear, pvp levels, and power guilds were everything you needed to be successful, or "win". It seems to me like Guild Wars 2 will be a lot less dependent on these factors and more about how skillful the player is. Your success in the game will depend on how well you play your class.
