Yes you! The one with the "!" over your head. Quit telling me what to do.
I know that the fact that you have a "!" over your head means that you have a problem AND the perfect solution to the problem, but I think I can do better than you.
Let me explore possibilities and find a solution that you missed.
After all, if you're so flipping smart, maybe you should have thought about how to avoid the situation you're in, instead of the flawless way in which I can solve it for you.
In the words of the 90's, I don't want to be your monkey wrench.
Thanks,
Bye.
Awesome post.
The days of hand holding are dead! (or at the least should be)
Playing: GW2 Waiting on: TESO Next Flop: Planetside 2 Best MMO of all time: Asheron's Call - The first company to recreate AC will be the next greatest MMO.
I feel the same. More exploration, less FedEx missions.
On the other hand, my GF loves questing... So where does that leave me? Following her around running quests *sigh*

And they feel like chores, maybe MMORPGs are better simulations than we give them credit for. They both end with us monotonously doing chores for our wives/girlfriends.
Seriously though, even without a dynamic event system, or an abstract objective system, it's possible to create quests that involve investigation. Single player games do it all the time.

Glad to see you get that off your chest. Now get out that and get to work. Those ten goblins aren't going to kill themselves.
"Gypsies, tramps, and thieves, we were called by the Admin of the site . . . "
Scrolls through offered list of light side /dark side responses, stops at this reply to the pushy npc,"You're not the boss of me".
Character's actual response:
"You're not the boss of me. I will do what you say."
or maybe
"You're not the boss of me. I will not get items and experience from doing your bidding. I will do someone ELSES bidding instead! mwahahaha. I'm so dark."
So you bought a game that has quests in it and are complaining that you bought a game with quests in it. Odd.
Stating the obvious usually makes for a lame post.
I think what the OP was trying to get accross was simply the fact that EVERYONE is making MMO's in this fashion and hes looking for an alternative.
Oh, I don't mind "!", but I wish he was more realistic. He just stands there all day staring at nothing. He's got this beautiful wife. House full of kids running in circles in the front yard. He says he's a farmer but all he does is just... STAND THERE.
Oh, and realistically, there would not only be one way to solve his troubles. Perhaps I could behead his children and "marry" his wife and earn some negative brownie points? Fun fun!
Or maybe I could lead his household in a prayer to the elf goddess and we could start an "!" revival!
Or maybe random dinosaur "!" could come along and eat "!", his family, and all the people asking "!" for their next assignment. And I could cast invis on myself and casually walk away smiling.
But before we can have games that are actually FUN we need computer manufacturers to realize that PC's are not just for secretaries and gamestations are LAME! So every PC made will already come with at least a quad core and jacked graphic card that doesn't suck ultra volts from our weakling wall sockets!
I think what the OP was trying to get accross was simply the fact that EVERYONE is making MMO's in this fashion and hes looking for an alternative.
Then the OP should play some other games. Alternatives do not magically appear just because he rants.
Let me put it this way. Dev are not going to stop making games the way OTHERs like, just because the OP is unhappy. There are plenty of games with NO "!" quest NPCs. GO play those. If he is not happy with those, there are other entertainment options than MMORPGs.
i played a game with quests in it, but i took an ! to the knee....
i personally hate the ! and ? over npcs, it takes the dynamic feeling out of the game personally. its like OH LOOK a quest..
i kinda enjoyed stuff like fallout 3 where you can randomly pick up a quest just talking to an npc they didnt have ! or ? over their head, if more games used that kinda system i think it might breath alittle more dynamic/immersion in to games making them not seem soo stale and repeating.
i dont know about other people but i like to run around npc towns and "annoy" npcs by mashing all their chat options finding quests or random crap statements.
sadly too many games now days dont do that or they are typical asian cookie cutter grinders which also suck..
Ah yes, I so agree here. It really is yesterday's concept. I wish I would have more say in how to solve a problem. Maybe the open GW2 quest system will be a bit better. It SO got on my nerves in SWTOR that EVERY SINGLE NPC had a problem and a detailled plan! And I was just the delivery guy or hechmen.
So yeah, it gets on my nerves too. Wish we had some system where the player is more asked to make a plan or something.

What OTHERs?
You're pretty much the only one on that side of the line.
Times are changing. People no longer want lower quality WoW quests, and the industry needs to evolve to meet the changing demands of its customers.
Pure abnegation is not going to cut it anymore. Sorry if that's what you want.

By people, you mean people on this board?
Last time I checked themepark on the rails MMOs still attract the biggest crowds while sandboxes still struggle to maintain enough people to make ends meet
Lets not ignore the fact that on all gaming platforms, the most popular games are games that hold peoples hands leading them by the nose
That's not to say, what you ask for isn't something positive. It just isn't popular. Popular is what matters since this is still a business where people want to make money

I HATE the Decline button in quests. As if I had ANY choice. yeah right. If I won't do the quest I will be forced to grind mobs for 10 years to get the same amount of exp.
Comments
MFW players complain to death about mob grinding to level, so WoW implements quest grinding, now players complain about quest grinding.
edit: typo
For the loot
I hope your manager was talking about an actual job, and not playing mmorpgs in your FREETIME.

Everything you need to know about Elder Scrolls Online

They made the failed game Earthrise.
I was cracking a joke at their expense since they clearly did not know what they were doing.
Edit:
You sounded like you know a little something about programming. So, the phone call referecne was that they needed advice

Bingo!
When did the word quest become so watered down that it became synonymous with errand?
Ah okay. It makes sense now.
I have been asking this for years!
Anarchy Online, for all it's faults. Always left me feeling like I'd just completed a true quest. Especially the Adonis chain.
Stating the obvious usually makes for a lame post.

More adventuring for a quest. Less questing for an adventure.
Ok so they are kind of synomyms but you get what I mean.

1) There are obviously quests in MMORPGs. I just finished one today.
2) You are free NOT to play MMORPGs with quests. It is a free world. There is no reason to follow what the quest NPC says if you don't like it.
Then the OP should play some other games. Alternatives do not magically appear just because he rants.

Just because you say something enough doesn't make it true.
I mean, c'mon, sandbox/themepark MMO discussion is dead in terms of sales.
Demand/supply, free market etc. etc.
