the Schaefer brothers headed blizzard north and were the leads on both diablo games, before leaving Blizzard to form Runic with the guy who created Fate

We know where they are from but that doesn't mean we should ignore the flaws in the games they've made since the heads of Blizzard rejected their work for D3.  It's convenient that you ignore Flagship Studios and the mess that was Hellgate London.  There's pretty solid anecdotal evidence that Blizzard North got some help polishing and improving their game from the rest of the company.

TL and TL2 weren't originally supposed to be released.  Their main focus was the TL MMO but their single player tech demo (TL) sold so well that they had to release a sequel.  It's smart business but it showed they were willing to sell incomplete products.

how can you call torchlight an "incomplete product" its a game that gives you hours and hours of play for 1/3rd the price of a normal game, and its easily the best diablo a like game since diablo 2 (i like titan quest also, but the combat has more "impact" in TL if you know what i mean)

mind this seems true of indie / small studio games in general e.g. terraria, minecraft, dungeon defenders, magika, spaz etc.  the big AAA developers need to stop resting on their reputations, get their fingers out and stop mistaking production values for actual content.

TL lasted me about two weeks.  The item drops didn't scale properly at higher levels and there was no multiplayer.  I enjoyed the gameplay of TL but there wasn't enough "meat" to keep me playing more than two weeks.  Titan Quest was a deeper product imo and the best DClone I've played.

I didn't really like either of those but it was how you could just buy everything in Torchlight that turned me off. And yeah, not much meat to it either. D3 reminds me a lot of Torchlight so if I were to buy one of those it would be D3. But I'm not getting either, not worth it, at least not until they hit the huge bargain bins so I get get a week or so play from them.

Does this game have any interesting background story for the characters or is it just another mindless loot grinder with a few cool features

Not that there's anything wrong with that

I think what many in this thread fail to understand is that this game is not really made for us... most of us are big game nerds or we wouldn't even read this site.

Game history... Fate which was really a dungeon crawler for kids is the beginning of Torchlight.

Torchlight was like those Fate players a few years later.. the game was developed more but it was pretty much the same game.. and just as fun.

Now we have Torchlight 2... from what I have seen it will be the same progression to TL2 from Tl1 as it was from Fate to TL

I have not played TL2.. probably couldn't say if I had >.< but I have played the other two. I gave Fate to my nephew after having a blast in a childish manner for a week. He loved it. When I first played Torchlight I don't really think I knew it had anything to do with Fate until I got in game and it was so obvious. Again I had fun.. it is what it is.. don't expect it to be a meaningful story based RPG. Its will be a great dungeon crawler in the style of its predecessors.
