Atari has sucked bad at anything they do since the Atari Jaguar era. Cryptic will be better off with Perfect World Entertainment who actually has a clue.
This is exactly the problem that mostly killed dnd as video game franchise.
For some insane reason known only to retarded investors they insist taking deeply tactical pen and paper game (with bigger fan base than starwars) and making it dumbed down arcade game. That appeals only to people that care nothing about dnd.
This was the reason, othervise good DDO originally tanked.
As for this, obviously reviewed by people with no knowledge of dnd, and with no knowledge of Cryptic
I just have to disagree. Both Mike and I play D&D (though maybe not hardcore as some), and as a fan of 4th Edition because of its innate MMO-feel, I think it translates really well to the action-based combat they have here.
I also stated right at the beginning that Cryptic has something to prove, and the general feeling on the show floor with fans and media alike is that they're doing just that.
Be reserved if you will, dislike the direction sure, but don't knock it until you've tried it.
I usually only play games that have owpvp, and I'm pretty sure this one will have limited to no pvp...but that said, how could you not be interested at a game that looks like Skyrum online?

How come only 3 annouced when there were 5 already announced? Figher, Rogue, Cleric, Wizard and Ranger. Do your homework, it's already 1,5 year old news:
"GS: And along those lines, we understand that the game will let players choose to play as one of five character professions. Can you share which professions these will be? How closely will they approximate the 4th Edition rules? Will we see heroic feats, paragon paths/epic destinies…?
Well this game is going to 100% come down the Foundry for me. I spent probably 2,500 hours in Neverwinter Nights 1/2 and much of it was world building and doing random content or hanging out on hardcore persistant worlds. It was some of the best times I have had in gaming. If they can capture this at all I will play.

Did my home work. Fact sheet from PWE right in front of me. Perhaps they did announce those back then, but for now they're only featuring the three. I won't mention the others until PWE or Cryptic does as well with the new partnership between the two (though I'm sure they're still in).
Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.
"All of the items will adhere to Cryptic’s ideals and PWE’s expertise in the F2P realm, meaning everything will either be cosmetic or convenience boosting items."
Other PWE games say differently, which is one thing that worries me, to be honest. Exp scrolls, I can pass off as 'convenience boosting', but PWE also tends to sell items that boost rates of making gear stronger (at some point they are absolutely necessary, especially in Perfect World, if you want to be competitive) HP potions that are automatic, in-game bots, etc. The saving grace for me is that Cryptic, I think, has done a great job with CO's cash shop, there's nothing in there I find offensive, so hopefully the two mentalities will balance out to a cash shop that's both fair and profitable.
I'd almost bet that extra classes/races will find their way into the shop, but thanks ot the 4th edition ruleset, everything is so well balanced that it's hard to find a particular race/class combo that far outshines anything else. Unless of course you're deliberately trying to gimp your character.
"Forums aren't for intelligent discussion; they're for blow-hards with unwavering opinions."
So did they show off the Foundry at all or give any more details about how it will work?
Not yet. Most of what they said about it was about how it would be featured right in the UI, tracking users, bumping users, voting creators, etc.
Well we can take some things from that. Abillity to DM on the fly probably. The downside might be the lack of rule altering or lack of game system alterations such as making a persistant module with perma death or something like this. It had a high difficulty curve anyway for modders.
Keep the info coming. Neverwinter 1/2 have a special place with me, and I was never physically ill about something to do with games besides the time I read that Cryptic was developing the next iteration. I am glad to see it is coming along nicely. GO FOUNDRY GO!
I'm surprised, this actually looks really good at this point in development. I'm not a big fan of the increasing trend in CCG-style skill selection on a very limited hotbar, but it seems to work pretty well for this title so far.
I'm afraid of the Pay 2 win scenario set up here. Perfect world are incredibly known for every single one of their offerings being pay to win to the last letter. It's insane to me actually that people will play their games. So I really, really hope cryptic has a say in what goes into the cash shop because I can't stand it if they ruin another decent or good sounding game with pay to win cash shops.
If you have an STO account I'd suggest you take a look at what Cryptic has been up to since PWE purchased them. Actually having money to develop makes a HUGE difference.
I like what's going on with STO. I checked it out again this weekend and the past changes are in the right direction. Will it get there immediately? Of course not. It takes time to design, code, test and implement.
Neverwinter looks pretty interesting thus far. It's using their engine which has been beefed up a bit it seems. Since it's the same Foundry it's going to be extremely powerful and bring a whole new realm of user content to the D&D genre.
And it's Free to play with no box purchase price.. I'd say that makes it worth every penny to at least give it a chance.

Bill,
You do realize that alot of traditional D&D fans absolutely DESPISE 4th Edition, don't you? It's why Pathfinder exists.
Personaly, I was never that into D&D as a system...always prefered either homebrew or things like Merps/Role-Master, FASA Star Trek, Fading Suns, Warhammer Fantasy Battle, Harn, etc...
Not Bill, but I know that a lot of D&D folks aren't so hot on 4th edition, and a lot of it has to do with (from what I understand) how MMO-like it is. That may suck for P&P but obviously works great for an MMO if the ruleset is already similar.

What he said. 4th Edition is MMO-like, and that's personally why I liked it for my friends and my own campaigns. We're all MMO nerds primarily, and this brought the table-top closer to that. I know not everyone likes it, but I do and that's why I'm a fan of it being in Neverwinter.

4th edition grew on me BIG TIME. There is a nice balance in classes I find comforting. My PnP group learned to luv it as well. We were tired of the constant book-buying of 3rd edition, and that edition just got out of hand real fast, hence why WoTC went from 3.0 to 3.5, but it didnt help much. The exploits were too large.
Look at 3rd edition, it was all powergamers, everyone ended up being a Barbarian/monk.
Look at 2nd edition, everyone was dual wielding warriors eating up THAC0 like it was nothing.
I will have to see how they use 4th edition. I know some changes would have to be made. It did bother me to read the part "Set along the Sword Coast, and using the 4th Edition rule-set (somewhat more than catered to an MMO game if you’re asking us)" as 4th edition was explained as WotC as their attempt to turn D&D into an MMO.
Since F2P then I will likely try it and hope to have fun with it.

I'm impressed and i had no hopes for it really. If they don't botch the f2p model and give people the races and classes for free, this could be a hit and redeem cryptic.
Looks pretty damn good. I do kinda hate that most companies who make a D and D game always seem to wanna set them in the Forgotten Realm. I would LOVE to see one set in the Dragonlance realm! Or maybe even one of the other realms they have that are awsome.
But gimme a Dragonlance realm setting and I am all over it!

By all means, please keep the details flowing in as lack of press restrictions permit. I'd like to know more about Neverwinter in its current state.
EDIT: Especially any class information you get, and more screenshots and video footage if possible.
Well we can take some things from that. Abillity to DM on the fly probably. The downside might be the lack of rule altering or lack of game system alterations such as making a persistant module with perma death or something like this. It had a high difficulty curve anyway for modders.

Between this and GW2 I think I will be in MMO heaven.
Fingers crossed for druids, bards and prestige classes - red dragon disciple and shifters please!

There is absolutely NO WAY Cryptic can ever make anything epic. Unless you were saying that tongue in cheek.
