Isn't game in administration?  If so may not be around when gw2 gets released.

No, someone stepped in at the last minute and bought them out. They're staying open.

Irony that of all the retailers GAME is giving one of the best deals...change must've happened quick at the ivory towers.

hmm... I really don't understand your math or how you're getting to this at all.

    60 + 15 a month x 5 month = 80?

    This is interesting....

Edit: Did the exchange rate properly, since the guy I was quoting didn't even use the right figures....

The British pound is $1.6 American dollars.  That means a game that costs 60 pounds costs a little under $100 in American dollars before tax.... not 80.

Once you realize this suddenly you start seeing it differently.  Cataclysm did not pre-order for $60, it pre-ordered for $40.  The $100 six month value I described was getting Wrath of the Lich King and Cataclysm with the free WoW/BC client and six months of play for free.  If you pay for 3 months at a time it goes down to $10/month.  That means if you pay for a full six months you get to roughly the same $100 value as Guild Wars 2.

That is Guild Wars 2 at $100 will pay off for a person who might also be interested in WoW after six months.

Worst yet a current WoW player will not get the same value until after a year.  But of course if you buy your subscription a year in advance you also got a free copy of Diablo 3 which even further extends the value even higher.

This is of course only if you are British.

Ify ou're North American you can say LoLGAMESARECHEAPERTHANGASLOLOLOLOL.

Why is there a difference $10 difference even here for DDE?

    What a rip off.

The Old Republics two editions were both cheaper, Tera is cheaper, Secret World is cheaper, any WoW expansion was cheaper.

Why does Arenanet think they can charge this ammount? Because it's free to play (with a cash shop)? And I don't even get the retial box? Pathetic.

Mass Effect 3, Skyrim and the new Assassins Creed were only £34.99.

I've never paid 50+ for a game in my life, and I never will, especially not for an MMO with a cash shop.

And a 3 day head start for those who pre-purchase it, 1 day for those who pre-order it. This seems like they are pretty worried about their game and want people to purchase it before release to me.

I had three days of headstart on The Old Republic to test it, and then cancel my order beacuse I didn't like the game, which I thought was very generous of Bioware.

As you can probably tell I'm pissed off. I'll buy this game a few months after release when it's reduced to £20, which I can see happening fast with the current price of the game.

Edit - (for the people who didn't read it all but stil comment making me out like a troll:)

1.) My post is about the British digital versions of the game, which are currently £60 (which is close to £80 dollars) very overpriced. The average game costs 30-40 pounds, not 60 here.

2.) Yes, I can shop around and get it cheaper. But my post is about ArenaNet's arrogance of having the game at this price on their website, irrelevent of whether I can shop around and get it cheaper.

3.) Also you only get a 3 day headstart if you buy it directly from ArenaNet, if you Pre-Order is anywhere else you only get a 1 day headstart. Pathetic.

Your assumption is that you will HAVE to use the cash shop every day, every month, and it will cripple you and sell your kidneys

By the time you play this game for 4 months, it will already be forever cheaper than any subscription game you have played before, assuming you only get the normal version.

Do you know why others view you as a troll? This price has been up for weeks, yet you decided to come 'rant' about the prices on the they pre-purchase goes online. Yes, troll indeed.

I never made any assumption that I would be forced to use the cash shop every day, you made that assumption on my part, don't please, all I was saying is that is has a cash shop.

What if I only play the game for 1 month before I'm severely dissapointed with it? Then I have wasted a massive sum of money, more than I have wasted on any game ever. So please don't make assumptions that people will play for months, many won't, it's an MMO it will never keep all of its players after one month.

Also I'm a troll for not knowing about the price until now? I'm a troll because I don't follow every bit of news about this game every day of my life? I'm starting to think you are actually the troll.

You need to stop making assumptions in general in your life I think, will get you nowhere.

Which is exactly the same as any other game, console or PC, single player or MMO. As the price is right around that 50-60 point in any case, where/what is the argument?

Because all above are shit compared to the awesomeness of Guild Wars 2.

Comparing singleplayer rpgs to a B2P Free For Life MMO that needs to be maintained and develop new contents. Ya right.

Do other F2P cash shop games charge an up front fee?

    This right here.

I dont know of any other F2P mmos that charge a box price. I'm sure Arenanet knows they can get away with it, and  that's fine, but it is kind of annoying to have to pay them money to get nickel and dimed by a cash shop.

I don't really like this business model, especially considering the fact that most cash shop games make a boatload of revenue off the cash shop.

I'll probably buy it anyways, this is just an annoyance.

SWTOR normal version was more expensive for EU, on origin at least, it was 60 euros, GW2 is 55 euros.

I got it for 40 euros tho, from thehut.com

I got the Collectors Edition Pre-Purchased.

It's my money, I decided that it was worth it. I have done my research into the game and I was going to be buying it 100% regardless of wether it was now or on release. I had a think about what was being offered and picked something I was happy with. In fact the only thing that would make the entire thing better is if I could play it * right now*.

If you are so offended by a game that is arguably offering more content at launch than any MMO ever, with no sub fee, costing a few dollars more than normal then I have something for all you people on your high-horses. I'll even include the text and bold the part I'm refering to.

    $200,000 raised so far!

    Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Today we sent out a press release announcing that we have sold over $200,000USD of supporter packs to over 13,000 fans. 13 people have bought the Diamond Pack so far.

We're amazed by the generosity of the community and are deeply thankful. This money will help fund a substantial amount of future development and will secure the future of the game.

Of course, we're nowhere near the break-even point yet, but sales so far exceeded our expectations. Please continue to spread the word about Path of Exile!

We now support the option to upgrade from one type of supporter pack to another, if you'd like to increase the size of your contribution. Please email support@grindinggear.com to discuss this.

    [EDIT]

Also, LOL at all the SW:TOR fanboys complaining about a 'F2P' game costing so much. How does it feel that your Co-Op RPG was just as expensive?!

  • YamotaYamota Member UncommonPosts: 6,593

Even in Euro the digital standard edition is 5 euro more expensive for GW 2 compared to Tera and Secret World. So not sure how they are justifying this because the non sub argument is invalid because the game is not B2P it is B2P PLUS cash shop.

I will personally take a wait and see approach for this game because I want it confirmed, independently, that there wont be any P2Win items in the cash shop. Higher price I could accept but P2Win, no. Just No.

EDIT: Just noticed that for the TERA pre order version which osts 50 euro I get a bunch of in game stuff, like a mount etc, but with the GW2 55 euro pre order version you dont get shit. You have to pay another 20 euro for the same type of stuff as the 50 euro TERA version. So it is worse than what I originally thought.

  • thamighty213thamighty213 Member UncommonPosts: 1,637

Have to say the price is a little steep but I'll just wait until play amazon etc get it here in the UK and thne purchase I'm in no real hurry to buy a game that doesnt even have a release date as yet.

The big issue here is people seem to have gotten confused about the difference between Pre-purchasing and pre-ordering.

Sure, you can pre-purchase now from limited retailers and get the beta access, head start etc. It'll cost you anywhere from £39.99 upwards as people state.

Or you can Pre-order it (from GAME, of all places) at the standard price of £34.99. 1 day head start, no beta access.

So for those of you complaining about the price, don't bother with the early access or beta rights and just play the game, same price as every other title just without the subs fee. Sorted.

I'll probably buy it anyways, this is just an annoyance.

It isn't free to play. It costs a box price, like every paid game ever. It just doesn't have a sub fee. For continuing revenue, it uses a cash shop instead of monthly fees.

So you can spend as much or as little as you want, especially because it won't sell anything that affects your power in the game.

You are paying them money to buy the game, like every other game you have ever bought, ever. You just don't have to pay each and every month for continued access like other MMOs force you to do. That doesn't make it free to play. It makes it a better, more logical, and more humane business model than subscriptions or free to play either one.

"There are two great powers, and they've been fighting since time began. Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit."

    — John Parry, to his son Will; "The Subtle Knife," by Phillip Pullman
