In all seriousness though, they make really good points. TERA IS mainly about combat and their political system which I myself am not interested at at all pretty much exactly for the reason stated in this link. Besides these two things, TERA plays out just like about any other mmorpg that has been released in the past in terms of questing which ofc amounts to the majority of the pve content.
It is not about the hate really. It is just that TERA doesn't have enough in it save for the combat system to really distinguish itself among the other mmorpgs out there and therefore, at least according to Gamebreaker's standards it seems, does not deserve its own seperate section.
As you can see from the games they are following, these game are all high quality in their respective genres. GW2 is not released but is up there because I guess it is a very interesting mmorpg to follow (with the way it is trying to distinguish itself and break the mold) while looking very promising.
Bottom line is, TERA simply doesn't meet Gamebreaker's standards to be up there and have its own section.
The main thing is that Gamebreaker benefits from publicly bashing Tera, and sensationalism gets them views. GW2 is an extremely popular game and Tera is not, so openly bashing Tera makes them look good for their fanbase. With viewers you get advertisers which pays their salaries. I'm sure if EME greased their pockets a little bit they will be singing a different tune. Lastly they really want to please NCSoft a company that openly hates Tera so they can get into GW2's closed beta.
Advertising and closed beta invites to a popular game is really like gold for any gaming journalist blogger/site. If Gamebreaker actually gave an honest unbiased opinion on the game, they wouldn't get as many hits and threads like this incidentally advertising their site more.

how exactly is Gw2 breaking from the mold?
Dynamic events, sidekicking, content scaling, even pvp playing field, 2-week WvWvW battles, no gear treadmill progression, no mob/boss stealing/fighting, no designated classes, the list goes on...
Now Tera is a good game, and I would've probably played that if GW2 wasn't coming out. But having played a lot of MMOs for the last years I and many others want something more than the same old worn out system. Tera's quests are the same old grindfest as other MMO's, Tera shines in terms of graphics and combat, though we're not sure yet how complex pvp will be, mainly because it won't be on an even playing field.
But why get Tera when I can get graphics+combat+ a whole bigger package with GW2.
Still, GW2 sounds too good to be true and I'll have my final veridict when I play it, but if it plays like in the videos, then I'm sold.
Remember... all I'm offering is the truth. Nothing more.
The Gamebreaker guy makes some really good points. And after all it's his own opinion you have to understand not everyone is going to like YOUR favourite game.
Btw i'm kinda surprised to see a mmorpg website as big as gamebreaker.tv taking such a harsh stance on a videogame.
Since they are in the business i guess the easiest way is to say that every game is fun and every game is terrific. This way they won't anger fans and game developers.
But it's just being hypocrites.
So i'm glad the gamebreaker guys are speaking their minds.
Be honest and give me your opinion.
Let's just keep in mind it's HIS opinion and don't whine.
NO there are a lot of MMO with that level of complexity and even more. The point is that Archeage is a SANDBOX game (like Ultima, EVE, MO etc.) not a THEMEPARK like WoW, Tera, Rift, Swtor and Gw2.
And there is a reason why the sandbox games are niche and not very popular. It's not like they don't sound amazing... it's just that they are HUGE and i mean HUUUUUUGE timesink.
You have to invest too much time to have really fun in this kind of game so of course most of the people will just go in Themparks and have instant fun.
Archeage looks fun and i'm following his development but i'm 99% i won't play it (like the majority of this forum) because i don't have so much time for mmorpg (otherwise i would play EVE ONLINE right now)
Yes he has his right to his opinion however he has has to stay subjective because he is more or less a well known reviewer with followers. If he doesn't like the game personally than its fine, but however no need to go as far as he did. These are the same guys that did so many eps on SWTOR before and after release. And we all know all the problems it had, yet they constantly give it more chances. It suprised me they play for about 1hr and declare its bad. Seriously? 1hr? Not to say single player game idk how you can declare mmorpg after 1hr bad. Maybe the starting area is bad but is starting area the whole game?
And yes thats the problem i see with sand box games is that its whoever started first and played themost always has the most advantage. Kinda like all those web browser games.
In all seriousness though, they make really good points. none of that is actually new to the MMo genre. as far i can remember, Warhammer, and Rift also have dynamic events.
not to mention that F2P games, usually have the worse communities. and hopefully the P2W rumors remain just that, a rumor.
there are things i like and dislike from both games, so i could perfectly see myself playing both.
Well some people are sick of the same stuff over and over. I pre-ordered, played the first Beta test, conceled my pre-order and never looked back. Terrible game in my book, might as well call it SWTOR II the asian version.
Been playing MMOs since '98 and been wasting money on MMOs since '02. Not anymore!
the new trend on this forums, is to bash and troll any game that isen't GW2. not just Tera, but every other MMO is getting some high daily bashing as well.
some people are trying way too hard, to recruit players for GW2. so they will try to discourage or shase away, anyone who likes other games.
I used to be a f2p game player so never observed this type of thing before. I mean people have different taste but really first time i seen like people seriously just go stright out calling every game is bad beside GW2. I wonder if something happened when rift and swtor or other hyped game was gaming out?

Lets get something clear once and for all. I am not talking about the author of the article but about the site as a whole which the autor is part of.
this is not the first article about Tera and this is not the first autor to write his negative "personal" opinion of Tera at this site
Problem is, the site as a whole says nothing. Every opinion you read is a personal one, on any game site.. What matters is if it is justified or not. Did the author form this opinion by actually trying the game, or is he just pulling stuff out of thin air.
Two gamebreaker authors tried Tera and weren't too impressed by it. One author seemed to like it. All 3 of them gave pretty detailed accounts of why they got to their opinions.
As a reader, you can't ask for much more.
after 1hr? I'm sorry but as a professional you got to invest at least more than than 1hr. You don't see people like yakuza play a game for 1hr and hate it and decide to write this review. No he play it at least enough to graps the game before bashing it to high heavens. If they have spend at least maybe 5-7hrs i say at least 10hrs trying out the game and mess with as much of the game as possible than i would give their video more credit. but barely touching the game and stating an opinion? Ya if your like you or me on the forum sure but professionals?

What standards? The same guys that hyped up swtor before release and continue to do it after release even with all its problems? Ya real standards there -.- Also you play a game for 1hr and you know if it match your standard or not? O boy why the hell do people spend so much time to carefully evaluate stuff anymore when obviously you can tell its worth with in 1hr.

DE is more like grinding than questing, its like grinding but every now and than you get a exp bonus.
Sidekick no idea
Content scaling wokes double edged but some people like the progression. Also this means the entire game is end game and people will get bored of it.
Even pvp that takes little skills beside button mashing from what i seen.
Not the first nor the last to have WvW or server vs server
Again not the first game not have designated classes and personally i hate it because that means you can't speicalize. Everyone does pretty much the same damn thing, so mean no matter what class you play its pretty much the same.
Tera pvp in itself just pvp like just duels and DM is head and shoulders above pvp in all other games (beside EvE but thats not really mmorpg) The amount of skill and pratice required is rediculious compare to othe rmmorpgs. You can learn all the theorys you want but w/o pratice you still suck at it.

Just out of curiosity, who do you think runs gamebreaker? Who would that supposed editor be, and what would he gain from bad-mouthing TERA?
The ire of irate fanboys?
Really, if those as Gamebreaker were writing multiple glowing articles about how much they all loved the game, I would feel a lot more suspicious than I do over the fact that they don't really have a lot to say about it. About a month ago, an issue of Game Informer magazine state, in print, that Star Wars the Old Republic "had one of the greatest single-player RPG stories since Mass Effect." Is that sort of journalistic reporting what we want out of those covering TERA? Truth be told, there isn't a lot any gaming website has to gain by being negative towards a product, so I see their doing so as brutal honesty.
Though I suspect I wouldn't have to ask this question had they showered the game in praise, what is the problem with the folks at Gamebreaker issuing any sort of opinion good or bad? The fact that they post news articles does not mean they are strictly a news site. Their entire reason for existence is to promote their roundtable discussion videocasts which are pretty much all their opinions on various news regarding whatever game they're talking about. As such, not everyone is entitled to agree with their opinions, but to completely disregard everything they say to quit watching their shows or reading their articles simply because of what they think about TERA is utter stupidity. Reading only what one agrees with and shutting oneself away from any oposing oppinion doesn't exactly make that individual better than those they complain about.

Can I see a link to the article in question? In terms of a "first Impressions" sort of affair, one hour spent in game should be sufficient enough to formulate a decent opinion. It's a strike against the game if it's not already fun in the first few hours of the game. If it's some sort of detailed overview then no, I do not feel as if one hour spend in the game is enough time to gain an accurate image of the subject matter. Either way, these are just opinion pieces, and if one writer's one hour experience in TERA is enough to make him decide he won't play the game, there's not much else than can be done or said about it.

One hour? Really? Why not just one look at the cover? MMO are made in a day or two anyways.
People keep saying that Gamebreaker has a right to their opinions about a game. But that's not true. Gamebreaker is a major site of MMO information, so they need to do their jobs and stick to the FACTS. Opinions are for forums, not paid journalists.
I'm sorry that they don't like Tera but the main broadcaster admitted himself he didn't play the game past the starter zone. Also they were accusing Tera of missing features like voice acting which is false. There is at least 4 fully animated, voice acted cutscenes between level 1-11 that they completely ignored.
The only thing game breaker did right was that they openly admitted they barely invested any time in the game past the first couple of hours, and so their "professional journalist analysis" of the game is null any void to anybody with common sense.
Honestly, I had never heard of Gamebreaker until this thread came up, so calling them a "major" site of MMO info is a bit of a stretch.
Hey, they needed a title to bash, little risk to them to choose this one.

A first impression is exaclty that -- a "first" impression. It's not unlike meeting someone for the first time. If you meet someone who's dressed in dirty clothes and who smells bad, you're not likely to have a high opinion of them despite his or her being a highly intelligent individual. If you get in some play time on a brand new game then some co-worker or friend asks you what you thought of it, you're going to base your opinion off of your experience, however limited it may be. If one hour is enough to completely turn an individual away from the game, that really says a lot about the state of the newbie experience in TERA. Perhaps EnMasse should work on that aspect of the game for the launch. I think they are actually.
It is because the guy in charge, Gary Gannon, hasn't liked TERA from the beginning.
Gary Gannon had said, early on months ago, that he though TERA wouldn't have more than 15k subscribers at its peak. The then later said that he hadn't heard much about the game and didn't know anything about it. But ever since he has been trying to justify his original impression of the game.
Second, the idiot actually thinks he coined the term tera-ble. He didn't people on this site had been using it to troll the game months, possibly as much as a year or more earlier. So he fancies himself somehow to be the leading prophet of TERA's doom but in reallity he is not even original for a troll. He is a half rate troll.
The only thing that Gary has done well with this show is to have Mike B (aka Fony) as a regular on it. Gary is a self important, arrogant idiot that does little more than parrot what he hears others say and he goes into reviews with preformed opinions and spends the rest of his time trying to justify them.
All that said, I think this particular clip is pretty decent. Fair enough, this is one person's view of TERA and it is obvious that he is not into the action combat thing. Which means I can understand that the game fell flat for him. TERA is solidly based on its action combat and if you are not into it then you wont ever get into TERA. TERA also has its political system but that is, at best, a secondary draw. They are also borrowing good features from other games like the Nexus stuff and server vs server eventually. But the only thing that makes it largely different than anything else out there is the action combat so you either get into it for that or you don't.
Maybe the only problem I have where their assesment is that they underplayed what the action combat can mean for those who do like it. It is not a small difference in the game. It goes to the very core of how they game plays. It is in your face all the time. And I think it is important to recognise that if you do enjoy how the combat plays then this game could make all the difference. Take the questing they mentioned. Yeah, it is very standard, kill 10 x, bring back 12 y and so on. Not all of it but much of it. And that could be very disappointing if you come at it from an expectation that MMO are just about how questing is done. But that is really only a part of MMOs. In TERA I found myself enjoying doing the very simple kill 10 rats quests simply because the combat itself was fun. it wasn't simply a chore to be completed but the fun of the game was to be found in the hunting itself. So I wasn't bothered being asked to kill a few more funky tree dudes. But if that combat is not fun for you then yeah, pretty boring stuff.
So I remain squarely in the camp that says, try it out. see if you enjoy how it plays. You may just like it. But over all TERA will be somewhat limited because it depends on appealing to those who like the combat. I think it will be a solid choice for those who prefer an action MMO. But action MMOs will probably only be a smaller slice of the whole market, much like how hardcore ffa pvp are a niche portion of the market, but a solid one that is not going away.

GBTV is a business entity and it's first priority is to make money. As Wolf said, if EME is not giving them anything and they can score points with an audience that will arguably be multi-million strong why wouldn't they say what they did about TERA without putting more effort into it?
You're kidding yourself if you think the same reviews, er, opinion pieces would happen if TERA estimated those numbers or they were getting $ from EME. If Hello Kitty Island Adventure was releasing an expansion that estimated millions of players over here you can bet Gary would be smiling on camera about how it'll be raining pink next month lol.
They have nothing to lose by playing the game for a few hours and stating what they did. In the end I think it is swtor all over again since before that game released it was easy to see how superior the questing was...
Comments
how exactly is Gw2 breaking from the mold?
i had a blast playing tera the combat was great almost made me forget that the questing was so bad
i like gamebreaker and what dude said was true for him
there are so many games comming out that people are going to gravitate to differnt tastes
Playing with fire Nadya?
These are the same idiots who gave swtor full marks.
that is always a good thing. the more alternatives the better.
but in my case, i plan to play Tera and GW2 a week or 2 after gets released. this way, i will have plenty of things to do!p
oh im inmune to flames! lol i've been one of the few gamers, who have clearly stated skepticism about GW2 openly. and i'm still breathing!p
i dont think theres only "few" gamers, most of them are just in silence in a "wait to see" mode like me
you are one smart cookie then!p
not everything that shines is gold. we all learn that sooner or later, even the most rabid fanboys!p
Advertising and closed beta invites to a popular game is really like gold for any gaming journalist blogger/site. If Gamebreaker actually gave an honest unbiased opinion on the game, they wouldn't get as many hits and threads like this incidentally advertising their site more.
Three authors gave their honest unbiased opinions, 2 were "don't care", 1 was "ok". What else do you want?
Valid point.
Dynamic events, sidekicking, content scaling, even pvp playing field, 2-week WvWvW battles, no gear treadmill progression, no mob/boss stealing/fighting, no designated classes, the list goes on...

I used to be a f2p game player so never observed this type of thing before. I mean people have different taste but really first time i seen like people seriously just go stright out calling every game is bad beside GW2. I wonder if something happened when rift and swtor or other hyped game was gaming out?
We humanity as a whole working on that lol =X
O boy why the hell do people spend so much time to carefully evaluate stuff anymore when obviously you can tell its worth with in 1hr.
played with it quiet a few time not that hot.
So you didn't play the game at all i guess.
I would have no problem with their opinion had they done more research. However 1hr of game play and they can post articles on it? What are they random people on the forums?

All die, so die well.

Just not worth my time anymore.
