Ok so, when is the next Star Wars MMO coming out?

ignore_meignore_me Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 1,987

What's a realistic expectation for when I might be able to play the next Star Wars MMO, preferably set in the timeline of the original movies?

What will that game be like as far as design is concerned in a post-SWG, maybe post-SWTOR situation? Will they learn from the mistakes of the past?

Maybe 10 to 20 years? If ever.

I think you should expect somewhere around 8 to 10 years before another Star Wars MMORPG will be released.  That was the delay between SWG and SWTOR anyway.  Personally, I think you should find something else to wait for instead of Star Wars.

Sadly, I've wondered the same question.  Personally, I'd set the a Star Wars MMORPG directly after Episode VI.  Give as much freedom as possible to the players, have crafting drive the economy, provide a largely sandbox Star Wars universe with many 'adventures' to discover and all sorts of dynamic events going on.  The Alliance/New Republic is struggling to unify, Imperial Remnant still putting up a fight, Luke Skywalker attempting to rebuild the Jedi Order on Yavin IV... Loosely follow the stories of some of the novels such as the Thrawn trilogy.

    One can dream...

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

To answer the OP's question; NOT SOON ENOUGH!!!

Realistic I figure you may see one in about ten years.

After SWTOR and SWG I am kinda done with star wars in terms of MMOs.  I think SWTOR is decent, but its to cookie cutter, its massively themepark, I dunno... I like SWTOR but I am just sick of the currently the themepark mainstream MMO.  I would rather just seen knights of the old republic 3 at this point.

I think MMOs do best when based around D&D style theme, sword, shield, bow and magic.  To me DAOC/EQ has the best lore going on, I would personally rather have a MMO like that done right.  I don't know if I would ever play another star wars MMO unless it was perfect.

Prob never, at least another AAA mmo with the star wars theme. IMO, the main reason SWTOR got boring for alot of people, is that the star wars thing just isnt that compelling.

I think thats why fantasy themed mmos are so popular. everyone can get into it,  its safe. think about it, how many AAA titles were really successful that werent fantasy themed. EVE is the only one that comes to mind thats still going, and only with its niche core of players.

to that end, how many IPs that weren't concocted specifically for gaming and gamers have succeeded? makes you wonder. I realize there will be a LOTRO fan who pops in and says #s != success ... I don't completely disagree ... but I also don't consider LOTRO or most other mmos real successes.

warcarft, ffx (the old mmo at least), eq, uo ... these were all IPs generated by gamers for gamers.

warhammer ... even something crafted from another game platform was a bust. swtor, lotro, even d&d titles in general which is what all of this is based on don't work.

when something has underlying mechanics not founded in computer gaming .. maybe they just dont make good mmos.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.

    • Galaxies covered sandbox gameplay pretty well

    • SWTOR took themepark by the horns and ran with it

    • Clone Wars Adventures grabbed the newer fans and kids

They pretty much covered all bases there.  :)

Honestly, I think Star Wars isn't a good idea for an mmorpg.  It's sort of restrictive to use something as large and popular as that as the basis for a game like an MMO.

I'm hoping for some original IP.  And I hope the story actually fits the game and drives the content instead of just being there and selling books on the side that explain stuff in the game or cause endless retcon.

Honestly.  Ask yourself.  Did you buy SWTOR for the game it is or because it's Star Wars?  If it was based on another story, where would it stand in comparison?

After the total embarrassment of the NGE and The Old Republic, I doubt they will delve into the MMO realm again. If they do, we'll all be over 50 when it comes out. And when it does come out, they will probably continue to make stupid decisions, e.g., The Old Republic 2.

I grew up with Star Wars. I had all the old 80's action figures and toys. It's much different today. Now we see countless forms of cheaply made products that have licensed the Star Wars name. Try comparing the quality of a modern action figure to an 80s action figure. The difference is night and day.

Star Wars lost it's magic. It feels more and more like a cheap corporate entitiy as time goes on. It's all about $$$$$ and nothing else.

Forget that MMO thing. They busted everything now and on top of that they are going to release Star Wars Kinect.

LucasArts' management seems to have no clue. All Star Wars games since 2005 have been rather disappointing. And they invest in Lego Star Wars before they create a decent game.

Battlefront 3 is going to blow if it will be developed by EA, and the Force Unleashed series sucked balls. Please...

there is only one hope left: The Return of Kyle Kartan.

Here is a rumor, that Activision and LucasArts are up to something:

Hopefully never!  I'm a really big fan of the original Star Wars movies but I think it's time we leave well enough alone.

For me, most of the games that I have played that have their own IP feel very generic. RIFT and EVE suffer from this. There is no depth to the universe. The lore and implied details of the setting are thin in a created IP versus something like SW or LOTRO.

To the guy who put the Clone Wars kids game link in, thanks. That was helpful.

If the trend continues as it has for years, it won't matter was has happened and the SW IP will be back again and again.

Interesting.  I wonder what it takes to qualify as a "gamer generating a game for gamers", in your opinion. Some of those on your first list were generated by some fairly soulless commercial enterprises, for sure.

Well, lots of examples of games that were lovingly crafted crap that bombed despite the love, in fact there are probably more counter-examples for that theory than evidence.

I am afraid, but: this. Very well said. I had some fun in SWTOR, I still have sometimes, but overall see it as failed concept. I had such a great time in SWG mainly because of the great community. But I think the days of such tight knit and active communities is just over. Alas. People today can't stand other people so much, many just even shut down chat. And god forbid they depend on another in any way.

So my answer is, never. George Lucas is an old man by now, and I doubt after his death Star Wars will continue.

Oh I don't know about that.  I'm not really a star wars fan so can't say for sure.  However my brother is a huge Star Wars geek and in his opinion Lucas was everything that was wrong with Star Wars.  He says Lucas had a partner for the episode 4 adn 5, but the partner left for 6 and 6 was considered the most corny of the original 3.

Perhaps Lucas leaving may be the revival the IP needs.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.

the idea was simple. which games started as video games and which games didnt?

to be sure there are plenty of original to video game IPs that fail as well .. but I can't think of one IP that isn't original to video games that I would call a success.

LOL, ladies and gentlemen, we are talking about Lucasarts here.  LUCAS freakin' ARTS.  Think about that.  Does it send feelings of quality and competence through your gaming soul?

    image

It doesn't in mine.  They haven't done so for many years.

As for you OP, it will be 8-10 years before anyone tries another Star Wars MMORPG.  Alot of time, hopes, and mad-serious-insane-levels-of-cash went into SWTOR.  And if it fails to live up to expectations, or worse, outright die as an MMORPG, then it'll be even longer before there's another SW MMORPG.  Anyways, official Star Wars gaming on average, IMHO, has been very poor for years now.  Last good Star Wars game I bought was... in 2003, maybe 2004 if I'm a tad bit off.
