What MMO's did you buy that had hype that didn't last 6 months?
Warhammer Online
Champions Online
Rift
Those were all due to gameplay/content issues. I'd sort of add FFXI to the list only because I despised the UI/controls (unbearable as a keyboard & mouse user) otherwise that game was exactly what I was looking for.
Pretty much every MMO created since 2004. Sad I know but it's pretty much true, for me at least. I did however play Warhammer more than six months total, but never six months at a time. I could only take so much of EA/Mythic/Bioware's (whatever they call themselves now) ineptitude. I also played Guild Wars probably a tad more than six months, but again not all at once. Some of them like AoC I literally only played a few hours lol. I played DCUO a total of fifteen minutes after it went f2p ;p
Knew they would be dissapointments so I didn't buy any. I will admit I bought FFXIV but this was in Dec and is a much better now then at launch. I don't buy into any hype no matter what the game is hell I don't even hype myself up for anything.
TOR will probably get over the 6 month mark eventually but all the others I have no interest in returning. I'm getting better about buying MMOs that I would only have an interest in playing in the long term(even if on and off). There are so many new ones coming out that its not worth it to me to buy them and play them only as much as a SP game.
Didn't we have one of these threads recently? It would be better or more constructive to list MMOs that you played for more than 6 months and what it is that kept you. IMO
Every MMORPG game beside the ones ive mentioned. Latest dissapointment was SWTOR, my sub runs out today actually.
I just cant get exited over new games anymore, im looking forward to TSW and GW but they will probably suck like the rest. I just cant see any newly developed game that will satisfy me enough to not quit after a couple months.
Games arent made for "gamer's" these days. Its all about earning money.
Rift -- had great fun in beta -- as time went by they kept nerfing my character and character concept. When they utterly destroyed TTT etc for my paladin I left. I could only roll with so many punches and I had to adapt my template to nerfs many times and that was the last straw.
Tera -- I actually pre-ordered it and then cancelled the pre-order after playing 2 phases due to the westernizations.
Vindictus -- I found it fun while it lasted but endgame was really lacking.
Dragon Nest -- The game I played before vindictus -- this one actually reminds me of a more limited Tera.
---
Only listed recent games -- actually am playing Cabal of all things right now.
Every MMO I've tried in the last 6 years or so. They've all seemed so shallow compared to what came before.

Everything after WoW i quit after about 5 years or so and most games i tried my interest only lasted maybe 3 months
this is in no paticular order lol
Age of Conan 1 month
Warhammer online 1 month
Lotro 1-2 months
D&D 1 month
Rift 2-3 months
Swtor 3 months
DCUO 1-2 months
CoX 6 months (no idea why but it did lol)
Guild Wars 6 months to a year
Runescape years apon years (started playing 98' up to 06 then got sucked into WoW)
(yes the last two are what i started my mmo gaming on believe it or not ! lol)
but for some reason most of these games seem kinda stale now as for interest.
All of them except WoW. The other MMO's I played for longer then 6 months is DAoC and Asherons Call. But ive tried every major MMO since 2004, and I found all of them lacking in things that make a great MMO. I honestly think GW2 will be the next long term MMO because it has all the little things plus much of the great things that make an MMO viable long term.
Playing: GW2 Waiting on: TESO Next Flop: Planetside 2 Best MMO of all time: Asheron's Call - The first company to recreate AC will be the next greatest MMO.
Ive played a couple of mmo's in past 12 years avarage around 2 years each rest in all those year prolly around 50+ ive played from few 1 min to max maybe 2 weeks.
AC1 1year
PSO(Dreamcast) 1year
AC2 3years
L2 3years
DF 2years
Ive tested many F2P last 2 years and not found one thats hold me long.
This really should be in The Pub, but what the hell.
Lineage 2 - Maybe 2 months tops. The grind and lack of progress became very apparent early on. Beautiful game and style, IMO, but holy jeez the grind. This MMORPG came out when grinds were fine, but L2 took it to a whole new level way up in the stratosphere in grinding.
Age of Conan - 3 months. I fell for the hype, which in hindsight one has to admit the promotion of this game before release was outstanding. I was there when it launched. Tortage was very nicely done and a wonderful introduction to the game. But once in the general world and you start progressing, then you saw all the nasty problems the game had. Shoot, there were abilities that just plain did not work. I mean, they didn't fail to execute and commence a cooldown. They just pop up on the toolbar and do absolutely NOTHING. Then there's PvP and sieges, kind of the whole point of PvP. Just didn't work. Epic Fail Sauce. One of the most well known examples of an MMORPG to fail. So much hype. "Revolutionary" combat. But so much fail.
Warhammer Online - Again, I fell for the hype. Warhammer franchise + MMORPG style? PvP RvR? SIGN ME UP!!! But what we got was a terribly unbalanced class system and PvP only occuring in boring instances. Open world RvR, which was supposed to be the whole point of the damn game, didn't exist. I wandered through these empty RvR battlefields and fortifications, but everyone was only doing instanced PvP scenarios. Not to mention Customization was nonexistent in this game and one had a terrible time making their character "theirs." What's funny is I hear the devs responsible for PvP and classes are working at SWTOR, and you can read about the hilarity going on with PvP (still). This game had 2 good things only.
1. The journal / codex system was wonderful way of tracking what you've done and discovered.
2. The Ork / Goblin campaign was the only worthy campaign of the entire game. The ultra violent, simpleton, humorous feel of Ork "fluff" / background was ever present. Gork and Mork would've been proud.
But the rest of the game was a shining example of "FAIL." Left at 1 month.
Star Trek Online - I've been a huge ST fan since I was a boy growing up in the 980s watching all those Original Series reruns. I've watched most of the series whenever I can (mainly TOS, TNG, half of DS9... don't get me started on VOY and ENT). I've seen all the movies (The Wrath of Khan FTW... STILL). A few ST games have been my favorites, namely the Starfleet Command series. I had many, many hopes for STO. Namely I wanted to have a chance to play a Klingon fighting on behalf of the Klingon Empire.
/sigh
Without getting into a very long hateful and disappointing thread, Cryptic totally dropped the ball on the Klingons. And they were very busy fleecing paying subscribers by throwing content, which the game didn't have much of, into the C-Store.
DC Universe Online - A few weeks, not even a month. Didn't sub to hit, but my sister tried it out when I was visiting her for a couple weeks. I in turn gave it a whirl. The superhero idea was fine, but the game world was just boring. I also had no way of calling anything my own in the game. No way to leave your mark. Everything was just unrelated. Not to mention there wasn't much of anything to do. And Marvel is trying to get an MMORPG? Huh, they better be bareful and I hope they're taking the lessons from all the failures that have occured in this genre.

That 1 - 2 Knockout combination of AOC, WAR effectively took the heart ouf of my desire to see more of MMORPG gaming. Then STO finally snuffed the life out of it for me, whatever burning remnants were left.
