I really don't care if you can talk without swearing :P good for you ^^

All I'm saying is that it's annoying that we're being filtered, it'd be nice to be able to say what I want.

dont swear and you wont get filtered..i have played lotro for 5 yrs on laurelin and the community is the best i have ever seen in an mmo.no swearing at all.anyways, why do you feel the need to swear.other thing is when swearing was it at someone or just in general..would like to know m8..it does seem a tad harsh, but if its their rules then so be it.

I don't swear, I'd just like to have the option to, freedom of speech 'n all.

Private property rights 'n all trump freedom of speech.

No, I'm just not liking the idea of being limited to what I say, I'm paying for the game, I should be allowed to say what I want.

This isn't maple story, it shouldn't have word filters. IMO anyways.

I think people should start watching what they say and how they carry themselves in game.  People nowadays think that just because they are behind a PC that they can act and do whatever they want.  Theres no reason to use foul language....there really isnt.  There are kids and others that do not want to hear that kind of talk in chat and you shouldnt assume that just because its ok with you, everyone should have to deal with it.

You dont hear people using foul language elsewhere (for the most part, unless they have no manners)....why should it be any different in game?

You do realize if parents dont want kids to hear it, its as simple as a profanity filter. for other's like me it turns to be a major turn off in some games. sure i swear, alot. but i rarely direct it at another player. im the same way in real life sumthin bad happens the first thing out of my mouth is either shit or the f bomb. its just the way i am and i shouldnt be censored for it because im a minority of the majority that cant handle it. O and btw i have no manners in real life either does it make me a slob, yes, does it make me a bad person?  no.

There must be a swear filter somewhere to click and unclick and 2 Im sure you will be able to swear all you like if you find a like minded guild.

IMO, if they can filter words and they have a ban policy for those words, they should automate banning with the filter.  Takes the emotion out of it and people should have the abiltiy to learn to change their behaviour.

Swearing is called Adult language to discourage children from doing it but it isn't called mature language.  Filtering what you say is part of being a mature adult.

Mature adults dont play video games. and if they do on rare occasions. hardly worth cutting off a vast majority for the few paying customer's who maybe log in 2 hours of a night after they get home from work as compared to the customer's that are online between 8-12 hours a day.

Swear words are just too common to have any impact now days,  you need to be more creative.  If you swear too much then people will just put you on their ignore list and your point will never be heard.

Mature adults are able to do what they want and for however long they want. With maturity. Maturity is an attitude not an age or an emotion. It also does not exclude playing games.

IMO opinion swearing is censoring yourself. The point of censorship is to block or change what a person is trying to say. Since there are no curse words that act as a stand alone subject you can't make an argument that blocking them is censoring you.

Adding expletives censors whatever point you were trying to make by brining attention to something unrelated and useless in your expression. It's the way I relate it to my young kids. Swearing, or "bad words", makes you sound less intelligent than finding the correct word or expression to get your pint across.

Not sure where to go on your statement. Whether you meant adults in general dont play video games, or saying that most adults who play games are immature.

However,  just for fun, I looked up some statistics from the ESA and that the average gamer is 37. And 82% of gamers are over 18. So all that swearing in channels may show how far society has gotten away from moral values.

I am very much against government censorship.  Since I don't curse in games, well at least not in general chat or to people I don't already know, I think it is reasonable of them to ban cursing in game if they want to.  If not, that is fine with me too.

Obviously, and like you say, it is an attitude, hence most will have jobs as well as families and things that always need to get done over playing games. a mature adult wouldnt sit at home jobless playing games extensive hours with no hope for the future. they'd be out job searching.

Well, since the government isn't doing anything to you if you swear in Tera, you still have freedom of speech 'n all.  That is all freedom of speech means, you don't get in trouble from the government if you say mean things.  It does not apply to privately owned mmorpgs, or privately owned anything for that matter.

    2cp

Actually curse words add an emotional context. In some cases they can definitely be used as pointless, useless egocentric displays of dialogue. However to dismiss all instances as this, is itself ignorant and displays a complete lack of understanding towards syntax, as well as linguistics.

Emotional context is key to everything we do that relates to communication. To deny that, undermines the principles of public relations, which have defined our collective culture of consumerism that which spreads across ideologies and connects us all through economic servitude.

Ex: If I say "It was huge." You get a picture in your brain of its relativre size based off the emotional emphasis ascribed to the term "huge".

Likewise, if I say "It was FUCKING huge!" this context, vastly changes the relative size in ones mind, simply by adding and emphasize the word "fucking".

How this become a moral issue is beyond me, as there are no gaurdians of morality when it comes to specific words. These are archaic artifacts left over from English conservatism which disguised blatant bigotry, self righteousness, and plain disregard for reality. To continue to perpetuate this idea by teaching children to disregard any form of communication that doesnt comply to a concept of morality that is vague, and simply not real, is absurd, and counter the premise of understanding as a whole.

There is a deep psychological reason why these words are used, and that lies in their context. To ignore that as meaningful is to rob your children of an experience that can open up an new world of cognitive dynamics.

Not to mention the two words every parent should understand: PROFANITY FILTER.

I for one am tired on my life being dictated by ridiculous parents, over reaching protection of their children, who in a matter of time will be exposed to the horrors of reality like all of us. If you want to keep them in a bubble, that is your decision, but not one that I should be forced into conforming with, respecting, or participating in.

    Thank you.
