so what i'm looking for
1. new cpu, good bang for the buck 2. new motherboard that can hold that cpu 3. heatsink that won't let that cpu burn 3. under 400 bucks

Crossing back to Pentium wont make you happy. The AMD 64 chip is by far the coolest running cpu on the market. You want a good combo below 400$ go with Master Shakes advice. You want an asus mobo try this combo. Even after shipping your cost will be @ 350$ usd.

I have a cpl with 1mb and several with 512. I see no difference in speed. They have pulled back from making them with 1mb as it does nothing for the average joe. With any luck some one with the tech knowledge can explain it for us. I asked at a recent meeting and it was explained why they did it but it all sounded like this to me. http://media.ebaumsworld.com/index.php?e=retro.wmv
Any way if you still want the 1 mb cache there are 2 in your range.
BTW you can prolly find all this even cheaper on pricecheck or some of the other discount outlets, I just used NewEgg as i knew i could find quick links
LOL just realised the last 2 links where for dtr note books. I'll search out some in pricecheck and post em later.

Question for some the individuals who know more about the power supply of a computer
Right now I have an AMD Athlon Xp 1800+ Processor while running 512 DDR Memory and running a Radeon 9500 Pro 128MB Video Card.. Curently its being powered by a nice 300 watt power supply.
My question is that in about 3 hours i will be purchasing new parts.. Actually just a PC CHIPS motherboard with a Pentium 4 3.0 GHZ processor 800FSB... This is really the only new thing that I'll be putting in the computer.. Just gonna strip off everything on my current board and put it on this new one. Im curious if the 300 watt Power Supply is OK for the Processor's new speed. My computer runs just fine like it is and am curious for all who know, if it will be just fine with the new processor? I keep thinking i need a more powerfull power supply, but I really dont want to spend an extra 40+ bucks for a 400+ watt power supply if i dont have to.. Thanks...

You may be ok, depends on the quality of your PSU. But youre pushing the limits of your 300w. Id recommend a 400+ just so your psu has plenty of breathing room and is not being pushed to its limits.
The Athlon64 is a 64 bit proc but it runs 32 bit procs as well. It just already has the ability to run 64 bit OS and apps when they become available. In other words, you don't have to go out and buy and run a 64bit OS. You can run any 32bit OS or app, no problem.
Another thing, the difference in cache in the 2800+ vs the P4 2.4A does not make the Athlon64 proc suffer. The Athlon64 socket754, socket939 , socket940 procs are faster in games and some other apps due to there design and shorter pipelines than Intel's procs. Here is an older article, Dec of 03 that talks about the socket754 proc.
Where the Intel proc may be better is if you do any media or video encoding and/or decoding as well as multi-tasking, but in games and general apps the AMD proc blows it away.
Good luck in your decision, and hope you enjoy and have fun with whatever you choose.
No, it doesn't run any slower. It is just the difference of running a 32bit vs a 64bit app. The proc is designed to run 32bit programs if it doesn't detect a 64bit app. What this does mean is when you want to upgrade to a 64bit os you can without having to buy a whole new system. It also gives you the freedom to run both 32bit and 64bit apps.
I know my 64bit 3000+ will last me a year easy, and the 2800+ could last a year so the 3200+ won't be a problem. The socket754 procs are really good for their price when it comes to gaming and general pc performance, and in that, the socket939 is even that much better....just you pay a nice $$$$ for it.
Definitely no worries if you went with a 3200+, but you could save the $$$ and oc a 3000+ or 2800+ to the 2.2ghz of a 3200+ fairly easily.
maybe i'll get it in like a month or so..i'm hoping for prices to drop
and is it just me, or have pc cases lost their "zing"?

Soltech makes a very good socket754 mobo for the Athlon64 proc. The MSI socket939 board is probably one of the best for the socket939 Athlon64s right now, and the Asus socket939 boards are a close second. I'm very happy with my ASUS K8V socket754 board so just want to throw that one out there. Abit, Epox and Asrock also make good socket754 boards.
FYI, which you probably already know, if you buy the MSI "K8T NEO2-FIR" socket939 board, the cheapest proc for it is the Athlon64 3500+ which is running around $350+ and is hard to find in stock.
edit: On the cases. There are a ton of cases to choose from so just keep searching. I originally bought a Thermaltake VA3000 Dream Tower Black Tsunami at newegg
This is what is confusing Murt. Here is what you need to know. AMD makes 3 different socketed Athlon64 procs, the socket754, 939 and 940. A socket754 Athlon64 will not fit in a socket939 board because the interface is not compatible. Likewise a socket939 Athlon64 will not fit in a socket754 board and so on. The number of pins in a socket754 is 754 and the number of pins in a socket939 is 939 and so on. Yes, they are all Athlon64 procs, but there socket interface is the difference.
The first Athlon64s made by AMD were the socket754, and then they came out with socket940 for servers. The socket939 platform is AMDs newest Athlon64 platform and offers the newest Athlon64 and Athlon64 FX procs.
One other difference between socket754 and socket939 besides the interface and price, the socket939 supports dual channel memory using unregistered, non-ecc ram. The socket754 platform supports only single channel. AMD views socket754 as its entry to mid price 64bit platform while its socket939 is for mid to high price platforms. Socket940 is mainly used and marketed as a 64bit server platform. Interesting note, socket754 will eventually replace the socket A platform as well and will be the main home for AMDs new Sempron proc.
now i feel stupid, I know i'm supposed to match the socket number things, but I guess i took the easy way out..which was the wrong way too
and now to find a case, i have a mid tower..i think around 16 or 17 high..thing is, I don't know if the new motherboard with that cpu and the heatsink will fit
when I bought the coolermaster jet heatsink it didn't fit, because the raidmax cases are so squished together..the power supply had to be removed to put the heatsink in..and then you couldn't get the psu back in without breaking the heatsink off
lol
so err...do you think it'll fit? i have a raidmax scorpio 868 mid tower..

so which should I get, sacrifice an extra 512k cache for the 64 bit? or go just straight to the 1mb cache but not a 64 bit..and a pentium
i've always been an amd guy, and switching over would feel kinda weird
thing is..i want the best bang for my buck
so does the 64 bit processor out do the pentium's with 1mb l2 cache?
or does the extra cache on the pentium out do the 64 bit processor?
*OH AND ANOTHER THING
is it true I woudl have to get another OS to use the 64 bit processor?
*THESES
the pentium is faster in speed and has more cache
the amd has a 64 bit processor
does a 64 bit processor really make that much of a difference?

Murt, I'm gonna help you out here.
If you are using your pc for gaming and general use, buy the AMD Athlon64 2800+.
The 2800+ blows the Intel P4 2.4A out of the water in gaming especially on newer games.

but couldn't get my Asus board to work in it because of a grounding issue so I went with a Lian-Li case instead

I am going to mod my case anyway, but it is hard to find a case. Good luck.
but it says Supported CPU: AMD Athlon 64/Athlon 64 FX
so shouldn't it support all athlon 64's?
*i'm just asking..i'm not too sure

Hope that helped and didn't confuse.
ah i see
now i feel stupid, I know i'm supposed to match the socket number things, but I guess i took the easy way out..which was the wrong way too
and now to find a case, i have a mid tower..i think around 16 or 17 high..thing is, I don't know if the new motherboard with that cpu and the heatsink will fit
when I bought the coolermaster jet heatsink it didn't fit, because the raidmax cases are so squished together..the power supply had to be removed to put the heatsink in..and then you couldn't get the psu back in without breaking the heatsink off
lol
so err...do you think it'll fit? i have a raidmax scorpio 868 mid tower..
