You should be able to. As far as I know. Alienware does not use any proprietary pieces in their cases besides the new cooling units. The card, memory, and everything else depends on the mobo, but you should be good to go.

AAAH! Please help before i go insane and start wearing pink catsuits with my old school tie!!!

Bought a new computer from Mesh (a well-known UK computer maker). Specs are:

Athlon 64 processor, Asus motherboard, 1 gig ram, radeon x800xt grafix card.

Problem is i start up the computer, the monitor (new one supplied with the comp) goes on then switches itself off. The comp remains on.

I then tried it with a different monitor (old one from my previous system which works). Switch on the computer - monitor didnt even switch on!

Can anyone help??! Should i just throw the damn thing out the window or can i fix it??!

  • OziasOzias Member Posts: 128

Did you hear any beeps, or a series of beeps from the Mobo?

This problem can range from a problem with the graphic card, to a fried processor, or something burnt out on the mobo.

Try to rule out the smaller problems first.

Is the monitor using a DVI connector, or the VGA? Is it a Flat Panel, or a CRT?

What i'm presuming is that it is a LCD monitor...and basically it's dead

    lol

they have been known, especially from big companies, if it is a more primative lcd monitor, it is most likely dead

that..or it could be your graphcis card

    heyy!

I usually don't read this thread, but I saw the last post was from you..so I came over

    don't you feel specialimage

and btw djin..how's that graphics card? are you upgrading it, or just keeping it overclocked?

because I was thinking of selling mine off and investing in a 6800GT

but then again..you got yours pretty high up...

    what's your view

    image

  • DjinDjin Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 3,263

    I see it like this.

Unless the games you're currently playing at making your PC come to a crawl, I wouldn't upgrade untill a little later.  Just so we all can see if there's anything else coming out in the next few months.

I have a 5900 flashed to a 5950 Ultra which is overclocked to 500/1000 for speeds.  I can do almost anything but get good scores in 3DMark. :)

I can't play Doom III or FarCry on max setting, but then again, I don't play either of those games.

All I know is this.  My next PC is going to be 64bit, 1+ Gb of RAM and a GeForce 6800GT which will be modded to an Ultra.  So it's all up to you Murt.  If you want to dump $400, go buy yourself an eVGA 6800GT since those are the best things out right now.

I wouldn't get ASUS, or anything other then the eVGA right now unless someone can prove me wrong and why they should get another brand, or why spend $100 more on a crappy ATI x800 which doesn't even support PS 3.0.

i dont know where people get the idea that one card costs $100 more than the other image

The way i see it is that the GT is slightly more pricey than a x800pro. The GT work at around £300 and the pro at £260, whilst the XT and ultra are both retailing for about £400.

I'm using a PCIe X800 XT card in my machine right now and as you can guess from it being PCIe, it's a realtively new machine. I have nothing i can complain about with this card, it's been incredible for me based off of max settings and super high resolution on Doom 3, and FarCry...two of the most demanding games to date.

To those people who state one card is better than the other, it's getting to the point where netiher card is so much better than the other that the masses should go out and get it. Nvidia and ATI's high end cards are so close to one another that you couldn't tell them apart on screen. To the person who was talking about SC2 and the rendering of the water and missing shadows...i've had no problems what so ever and my brother has a Nvidia 6800 in his machine. I had to run and try a comparrison out between the two when i read your post and caught myself shaking my head because i saw no difference at all.

Well, i lie, my ATI was faster it seemed. image

Yeah but at least the nvidia card renders correctly, same with a 9800. Did everybody just nod-off what bit-tech found out about ATI's x800 sure it may get 90 frames in splinter cell 2 but hey it doesn't matter if the water isn't rendering correctly or if it is missing shadows or if teh shadows don't even filter between teh planks in a room.. XD

They found this in so many games which led to my decesion that I won't be purchaisng a x800 at all.

    yea it's just

the guy on tech talk radio told me a nvidia card would  be more compatible with a 64 bit processor

    I'm a radeon fan..but that worried me

    image

  • lstruiksmalstruiksma Member Posts: 16
I'm not sure i understand why it would be better on a 64 bit processor. Do we know this to be a fact? Is there technical info backing this kind of statement up that someone can show us? Cause, if indeed this is fact based off of tech info, i'd be a tad worried too.

well I only believed him because he's like a multi billionareimage

lol... I'll go look for sources now

    can't find it...lol

well, it just made me uncomfortable, and now I'm like going crazy in order to go nvidia

thing is, I'm saving 400 bucks for xbox, xbox live, and a tv

    lol

xbox is a pc for your tv, get an upgrade instead. Ive sold my ps2, gc and xbox for my latest upgrade which i shall be buying next week. Im getting a 17" tft, 5.1 sound, 24bit soundcard, new mouse, new keyboard, icemat, cpu heatsink, ram sinks and a x800pro.

PC is better than ALL consoles ALL the time

  • SerienSerien Member CommonPosts: 8,460

yea I agree the pc is better but I'm getting it for this reason

people at my school really don't game on pc's...most of them are on xbox live, so I'm getting it to ...you know

    game with them

    lol

sure there is an online community, but I think fun would be added if i knew the guys in person

sure I'm still a pc gamer, and will always remain one, and I will continue to game as much as I do on the pc right now

just when they call and say "get on"

    I can get on.

well thats very true.... thats the only reson i bough my netword adapter for my ps2.... so i could play with all my friends.... but most of them are pc gamers too.. lol

they all just like playing games like socom 2 and final fantasy XI so am all for playing with them...

At least Nvidia uses PS 3.0!  I'm sorry if ATI thinks their dated 2.1 PS is going to keep up...

Wrong move for ATI... I guess you can't win everything, all the time.

I've been loyal to Nvidia since my GeForce 2!  So I've always supported them with every move, judgment and mistake they have done... I've been there to support them.

Nvidia is just a better company.  So I would spend the $399 to get the 6800 GT and then easily overclock it to an Ultra or faster.

Uhmm lets look at the definition of a PC...

single-user computer: a computer with its own operating system and wide selection of software intended to be used by one person

Soo...uhm...all consoles are the the form of a PC. I don't want anyone to get angry but I mean that is just stupid to say that....

I like PC a lot but I would not say it is better all teh time lol.

There is a thing called the internet, and anyway i still play 2 player wit my friends on my pc at games like MVP 2004.  So its just stupid to say that consoles are emulating pcs as pcs were here first so its an imitation of what the pc originally was.

    image

    image

  • CoraithCoraith Member Posts: 311

Ok, to clarify. Consoles originally stemed from the pc, they were made with a wider audience in mind becuase it suits some people to have a console over a PC. So the PC is basically the creator of the console becuase the people at nintendo saw it capabilities of playing games and thought hey we'll move forward the game and watch + gameboy and make a NES, and we all know the original is better than the sequel. Remember Nintendo is a japanese company and the fact that most japanese homes are so small the cannot physically fit a pc in them comfortably so thats why the console was made, convienince. Your arguement is saying that its easier to play with your friends on a console, yes it is, in a matter of speaking. Its easier if you get 2 or 3 mates around to your house, but even before that you have to spend £20 per extra controller so that racks up the cost. I know theres fun to be had with consoles with friends over, i had an xbox with 4 controllers and a gamcube with 4 controllers, but i very rarly used all of them, which comes to my point about MVP 2004, my friend and i regularly play that using 1 keyboard having just as much fun (if not more for the realism the pc provides over a console) as any console out today. Im not being biased as i have owned all the consoles and then a few months later they happened to be on ebay becuase i never played them. I didnt play them for one simply reason, the internet. Ok, nowadays you can get network adapters and the like for your PS2 & xbox but thats another £50 again, but the internet - on my computer - means that i can do so much more than i can on a console. I can not only be fragging away on UT2004, but i can have SWG in the background and MMORPG.com forums also running. For me and for many others, PCs are easier, not to mention the obveous performance gain with a PC and the high standard of games which you simply dont get on consoles, and another thing going for PCs is that A MOUSE AND KEYBOARD CONNOT BE BEATEN! Its the easiest controll system there ever was, its so much freer that two thumbsticks. One more reason for PCs being better than consoles... pr0n ^^

Hey, im wondering, im getting a new graphics card for christmas, and i want to spend as little as possible for a great card to make Everquest 2 pretty image Im thinkin prices might go down some by then and i wanted to know if you guys have any recomendations? i was thinking either the 9800XT or the X800 Pro, again, i want to spend as little as possible for a great card. I am not an overclocker so i want a card with a good stock speed, also, something that doesnt heat up easily and can keep cool. Thanks in advance!

You can get the lower end model of the 6800 or x800 and only spend a few hundred.  Or you can spend the same amount and get yourself a high end 5950 or 9800...
