I was wondering if someone could take a look at the specs for a system I want to build, and give me opinions and/or advice. I helped my brother put together his computer, but I just built it, I didnt pick out the components, so Im completely new to this area.

Ive got a budget of $750, so keep that in mind. I dont need top f the line stuff, but would like to play some newer and future MMOs on it wth few problems.

Im buying most of my stuff from NewEgg.com. Iknow I can get things cheaper on Pricewatch, but it seems like their rating system is not accurate and there is no way to tell if a company is really reliable. Members of my family have ordered from NewEgg with good results, so I feel pretty confident sticking with them.

    Specs:
    CPU:
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 512KB L2 Cache 64-bit Processor - Retail
    Price: $150

    Mobo
Im not really sure about this one. Right now Ive got
MSI "K8T NEO-FSR" K8T800 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 754 CPU -RETAIL
    Price: $76
    Any suggestions Appreciated

    RAM
    Mushkin Dual Pack 184-Pin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200 - Retail
    Price: $135.27

    HD
SAMSUNG 40GB 7200RPM Light and Slim IDE Hard Drive, Model SP0411N, OEM Drive only
Im planning on using this for my system and game files, and an older 80 GB HD for storage.
    Price: $47

    CD
Rosewill 52x32x52x16 CD-RW & DVD Combo Drive, Model C523216, Retail
    Price: $30

    VIdeo Card
Sapphire RADEON 9800 SE ADVANTAGE 128MB DDR AGP 8X DVI/TVO(Lite Retail)
    Price: $137

I already ordered the case which was $60. It came with a 420w PSU
    Total: $635.27
That gives me $114 to either spend on better parts or save for things of lesser imprtance (like food or the actual games I want to get)::::28::

Ideas and advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Para

i got the system you described and it works nice. Differences would be a 9800 pro and a spinpoint 1614 HD. had a few problems to get the SATA working, but games work fine now.

That is a nice system you got going there Parapsycho. The only thing I have a question on is the HD and the video card. The HD, and I do like samsung as they do make good drives too, but it is only 2mb cache. I realize you are using it for system and game files but I would recommend going with a HD with 8mb cache. If you could stand spending $6, you could go with a Western Digital 40gb, 7200rpm IDE HD with 8mb cache for $53. You could get a better perfoming HD and faster load and write times. As far as the video card is concerned, I realize you are on a budget, but a 9800se doesn't perform as well in games as a 9600XT and in some games a 9600Pro. I would suggest a 9600XT over the 9800se. You could take a look at the Rosewill ATI RADEON 9600XT for $136. Rosewill has actually put out some very good video card builds of late. If you would like any data to back up what I've said about the video card, check out this review at Tom's Hardware. I've also helped a friend of mine on a build who bought a 9800se and sold the 9600XT he had. He got worse performance out of the 9800se than his 9600xt so when I read over the review and seen some other reviews with the same results I was not surprised. Good luck with the build and let us know how it goes once you get her up and running.

my advice would be to get more RAM and consider upgrading your motherboard/cpu. AMD XP 2500+ mobile runs for about 90 on newegg.com. also try right clickin on "my computer" and clicking "properties" and it should tell you more information about your pc

would getting a better RAM and the other thing u said make my pc go faster or something? cuz the game i play atm is pristontale, so im not sure since im not the smartest computer person around, and do i have to get specialist to put the equipment in for me?

Ram helps prevent lag in games that use a lot of resources...for example, if you were playing EQII I woudl reccomend more ram.

But if you're saying "it's going slow" then I'm gonna guess it's your processor

what's your make? I need specs to diagnose your problem.

mines a packard bell, but i thought lag comes from ur connection....image but my information bout my pc is on page 260, [or 259 if it isnt on 260]

but i play pristontale, i just need it to load quicker so i dont connection time out which really annoys me cuz i got norton anti-virus, firewall, internet security, anti spam all running at once so i think that takes up some of the CPU.

but if i buy the equipment how do i put it in? and where will i have to go to get sum1 to put it in for me?

well it comes from many things, from connection to ram. It all matters. And having that many firewalls and all of that stuff does slow down your computer a considerable amount.

If by buying the equipment you either mean new processor or ram, then you're most likely going to have to redo your motherboard also. It's fairly simple to put in, but if you plan on upgrading all of that, you won't be able to pinch your pennies. I would suggest, if you're just playing pristontale, then get rid of some of those programs you're running, I doubt you need more ram or a new processor. Sure it will make your computer a lot faster, but in the case of just playing priston tale, it isn't really worth it.

Celeron's aren't good for gaming because they only have 128k cache, the new processor have up to a meg of cache with 64 bit application processing.

Yours however, has 128k cache with 32 bit application processing. Cache is like how much information your computer can processor directly from the internet. The base processor (average) have 512k cache.

    no problem at all. image

well i have tried closing most programs before playing pristontale but it still takes too long to load im presuming, so im thinking of getting a new motherboard? or more RAM like u guyz advised me to do, but of course i will use the CPU for other reasons rather than just playing Pristontale, and RAM for storing more data.

any suggestions on 2 good RAM, and a motherboard processor?

Hey, i have a question about hard drive space. I have a 30 gig HD(27.89 actually) and i currently only have 11.83 gig's free.I only have one game currently installed, which is HL2 and cs source, and all of that together takes up about 4.67 gigs.I have other misc. programs such as microsoft office and other smaller ones under 50 MB such as AIM.My problem is i dont know where the heck all of my space has gone.I use norton cleansweep 2001 to find stuff, and i have already cleared a few gig's of space. The cleansweep brings up alot of stuff that i am not sure if it is okay to delete. Does anybody know of any other programs similar to cleansweep but tell you if it will mess up your system if it is deleted?

  • fatalblitzzfatalblitzz Member Posts: 128
yeah, it amazes me also where all my space has gone, but my guess would be from temporary files and other files such as drivers etc. Even then it would still probaly be the windows resources? maybe?

  • LanmoragonLanmoragon Member Posts: 994

Yea, when i use the cleansweep to find orphan, unused, and duplicate files, it comes up with tons of crap.I have cleaned out and backed up on an external HD all of the stuff that i know wont screw up my comp, but there are hundreds of duplicate files for windows drivers and service packs.I know that the duplicates can be deleted and backed up, but im not sure how to just delete the duplicates and keep the one file i need.Anybody know of any programs that make it pretty simple?I also hate those stupid files that are titles 390lapoijegf039, its just a bunch of jibberish and i cant figure out where and what it is from.

Abit and Asus make quality motherbaords. Mushkin, Kingston, etc. have made quality ram as far as I've seen. Your best bet is to go to newegg.com, pick motherboards, put in your price range, and see what your options are. If you find one you like you can come back here and ask if it's any good. Murt and Valrauk should be able to help you out.

well i found a motherboard i think its a motherboard anyway, AMD athalon mobile 2400+ i think. and its $87, but i havnt been searching for a RAM but ill go searching later. any good suggestions?

my DFI ultraII motherboard has done great wonders for me. Got it from newegg for about 90$. although it's not an AMD 64 motherboard, it still overclocks the AMD XP's pretty well. Had it for about 4 months now and has never let me down ::::02::

  • ZaoldyeckZaoldyeck Member Posts: 67

i'll like to know will the AMD Athalon 2500+ will it be good?

and i'll like to know a good RAM for my PC atm........and i'll also like to know wat else i'll need in order to play MMORPG with like really really really DECENT graphics and etc.

so can have a wide variety of gaming to choose from.

    thnx greatly appreciated imageimageimage

hell yeah dude, i have the 2500+ xp mobile, which is basically the same thing as the 2500+ but it runs at lower voltages, thus allowing for a better overclock. I doubt you would have to overclock though if you're gonna just be playing prinston tale.

  • SaigonshakesSaigonshakes Member Posts: 937

I think he thinks the AMD is a mobo. If I'm not mistaken it's a processor.

  • ZaoldyeckZaoldyeck Member Posts: 67

ok i am officially CONFUSED NOWimage. i  think i need to know which part of my PC effects what on the MMORPG......like RAM does what, and connection speed doing what....etc.....etc....but im mainly interested in whats RAM, processor, connection speed, and mobo?[not sure what a mobo is, its prob a short way of saying mobile?]

cuz i've been told i need a new processor and that i need more RAM, but will that effect my PC making mew have to download all my music, and videos again? or is it on a different component?image

    sorry for the hassle...image

i've also found the AMD processor but im not sure is it good or bad so can sum1 tell me plz. image

  • SaigonshakesSaigonshakes Member Posts: 937

Ok. Mobo is short for motherboard. RAM is going to prevent lag on an MMORPG. The more you have the better the performance. The processor you have listed is not bad. The AMD 64 series are better, but stay in your price range. All the music or whatever you've downlaoded is stored on your hard drive so upgrading a processor, or RAM, won't effect those files. Give a price range your looking at and I'd be glad to make some suggestions for a motherboard, processor, and ram.

  • ZaoldyeckZaoldyeck Member Posts: 67

ok thnx that cleared out alot for me image

hmmmm price range i havnt really made 1 but as long as each one doesnt go higher than wat $100 [a little bit over wont matter much like $115 prob its limit]

i just need a quicker processor to load the game, and RAM so i dont lag with the game, and wat does the motherboard do then?

    thnx for the hlep image
