This game looks interesting...please tell me its not like AION...

BroomyBroomy Member UncommonPosts: 487

I am liking the features of this game and am thinking of preordering it and trying it out.  My only hesitation is that it reminds me so much of AION!  Linear, cheesy (IMO) art and armour designs (chainlink mini skirts anyone?).  Can anyone that did Beta tell me its not like AION please?

Thanks.

I'd avoid it for if were you. Sounds like you don't like Asian themed games.

    It's an Asian themed game.

No problem with not liking it , but it's not your cup of tea sounds like.

Personally I prefer the art style and themes/sounds from Lineage/Aion etc style games , so enjoying TERA immensely.

Playwise isn't it so much like AION but art wise is it worse. I dunno if there is a single female armor that don't let you see the panties under when you run. And some monster looks a lot Nintendoish.

It is a pretty good game otherwise but if you can't handle stuff like that stay clear.

It's somewhat less linear than Aion, however, the game still has an Asian art style.  I'm not sure which you would consider worse between the two.  I honestly prefer TERA's art style to Aion, but I don't know how you'd feel.  Honestly, you should have tried the open beta last weekend.

Art style feels Aionish! However I find it feels kind of Monster Hunterish, combat is better than GW2's combat imo.

The PvE is good and interesting, unlike Aion.

It is an AKG (Another Korean Grinder).  So yes, it is like Aion.  The good news is I haven't noticed any major latency issues that plagued Aion... But I have yet to try major population events like PvP war or anything.  The art style is very similar to Aion which is what gives it that feeling.  The chain system is similar to Aion, but the entire combat system is very different.  I would get a buddy key from someone and give it a try Broomy.   It seems to taken many things that were good in Aion and left out most bad.  There are some big cons as there is with everygame, but it is inevitably best up to you to decide.

Overall, I will say that the art style is more "grounded" than Aion.  Aion was probably one of the most unimersive MMORPGs I've ever played as all the zones looked like decorations at a Disney themepark ride.  TERA is much closer to traditional fantasy, except for with ancient elvish creatures that look like 12 year olds with no pants.

And giant mushrooms out of Super Mario...

The artstyle is kinda mixed between brilliant and pathetic, some stuff really looks awesome but the theme of the game is somewhat unclear at times.

Thing is, it seems at this point when the excitment wears off of the new "True action combat" we wont care to much to talk about this, Tera

Art style it builds on aion and lineage. But consider it like the ipad, lineage is ipad 1, aion is ipad 2 and tera is the new ipad, they are developed in different genertaions. The combat system is nothing like aion, aion combat feels more restrictive than wow, aion combat is a cross between lineage and wow. All the questing is very generic in tera but it doesnt feel that way, thanks to the fun combat system.

It is like Aion in every way except combat.  To me.  Hence, why I'm not liking it.

Perhaps it will if the market gets flooded with "true action combat " like it is now with "true tab-targeting combat",  Until then I would expect it to remain fresh and unique.

    Absolutely incorrect.

It's more traditional fantasy than Aion but not by much. If I were you I would watch some YouTube videos since art style can be discerned easily.

The mobs and environments change along the way as well and the end looks like some Borg takeover of the land. The Argon mobs you fight at a certain point are some of the best I've seen in an MMO. Biotech baddies ftw!

Just not worth my time anymore.

Yeah I disagree that everything is like Aion. That sounds like something you want to believe, personal opinion.

maybe not, but im at that point where i cant really enjoy older mmos combat systems, after trying tera. Yes, the rest of the game is pretty... generic (?) but arent all other games since wow, some indies aside, quite generic too?

its quests, instances, etc are quite like all other mmos around, but open world, pvp with means, quite hectic combat (wont let you watch tv at the same time, for most of the time, unlike alt-tab mmos :p) are what makes it soooo much different.

And for gods sake, will people ever stop talking about one mmo combat as it was some small, almost irrelevant thing? You spend 90% of your time doing it, and people are trying to marginalize it, saying like 'omg all it offers is different combat, everything else is copy paste'. and yet those people were defending a 200m+ project which spent 90% of that money on making cutscenes, as its main, and only selling point :o)

@op with all that said.. if you dont like Aions art style, you probably wont like this one either :/

If your only reason for playing TERA is the combat then it's just logic that if combat "wears off" you wouldn't like TERA anymore. It's great there's more to TERA than just combat and as far as I know combat plays a role throughout.

Pointless argument is pointless I guess.

i never said theres no more to tera :P theres lots more, but im at that point where open world pvp + so freaking awesome combat is something i couldnt resist :) Im so tired of 110% instanced games with no world pvp whatsoever, where only reason to finish Dungeon of Awesomeness tier 4 is to be able to do tier 5 of that thing (:

More to Tera than combat...like what?  What else in Tera is new and hasn't been done a million times in other games and better, at that?

Ok, somewhat.  Aion has housing and more meaningful PVP and a wierd pet system.  So it has more than Tera.  But when I played Tera last weekend, the crafting is the same, the questing is the same, the over the top character graphics and sounds are the same.  Tera is prettier to my eyes and the combat is more action oriented but I still felt like I was playing Aion 2 minus the Daeva wings.

I cant stand Aion , but am enjoying Tera , and no game has ever come close to the horrid combat sounds of Aions bologna slappin plastic pipe sound for every single combat move , and the terrible bandaging sound .... blecchhh  of course this imo

    @elocke

Wow, is that axe sharp enough? Sure, add all past MMOs up and the combat isn't even unique to TERA. That's not the point. TERA is simply a great MMO that has it's own style and a lot of features. I would make this post far too long if I listed every reason why I thought TERA was better than any MMO to date.

It's sad that to be a good MMO these days you have to have something completely different. Maybe it's that more recent MMOs haven't been doing it right. Eh, we'll see how the Kool-Aid tastes in a few months lol.

Just not worth my time anymore.

I'm glad someone else has noticed this as well.  I don't know what it is about people down playing the action combat, making it seem like it's just a minor change.  The combat is a massive shift from combat in every other tripple AAA MMO.  This is what makes Tera amazing and it is what will make it a successful game.

I've played every single MMO that is available in the US except some F2P games and Tera has by far and away the best combat.  You are killing shit in every single MMO, that's what you do so I'm going to play and support the one that makes it fun -- not a job.
